Ran Carthon is out as the Titans’ general manager after two years. The team announced on Tuesday Carthon has been fired while noting head coach Brian Callahan will be retained.
Tennessee moved on from Jon Robinson late in the 2022 season, his seventh at the helm. Carthon was hired as his replacement, and he faced the task of overseeing a transition to a younger core. One of the central aspects of that effort was the decision to draft quarterback Will Levis, but his time atop the depth chart has not matched expectations. Carthon’s job security was in question leading up to the end of the season, and now the team has indeed moved on.

“It’s impossible to ignore that our football team hasn’t improved over the past two years,” a statement from owner Amy Adams Strunk reads in part. “I am deeply disappointed in our poor win-loss record during this period, of course, but my decision also speaks to my concern about our long-term future should we stay the course.”
The Titans went 6-11 in Carthon’s first year as GM, which doubled as head coach Mike Vrabel‘s final one in the organization. The latter was dismissed last offseason in a sign Carthon may receive a lengthy opportunity to oversee the Titans’ rebuild. Indeed, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network notes the 43-year-old signed an extension this past offseason, a deal which left him with four years on his contract. Carthon had executive vice president added to his title last January in a move which gave him roster control and a major voice regarding the coaching staff.
Callahan was hired during the 2024 cycle, and his Titans gig represents his first opportunity as a head coach. The former Bengals offensive coordinator was tasked in large part with overseeing Levis’ development, but that process did not go according to plan. Dealing with injuries during the year, the former No. 33 pick was benched late in the campaign and his future in the organization is up in the air. Tennessee finished the year 3-14, leaving the team atop the first-round draft order. The opportunity to add a new franchise QB will add value to the GM vacancy, although the quick hook Carthon has received could give at least some interested candidates pause.
In the meantime, president of football operations Chad Brinker will oversee the search for Carthon’s replacement. The longtime Packers staffer was hired in 2023 and promoted to his current role last offseason. Brinker along with Callahan will be key figures for the organization moving forward, although the team announcement makes it clear Brinker – not the new general manager – will “break ties” when it comes to roster decisions moving forward.
“I think the general manager position is unique to their respective organizations,” Brinker said in a statement. “This particular job, what we’ll be looking for is someone who has spent their career as a scout, is a top-flight, top-level evaluator who has spent the majority of their career projecting college players to the National Football League, they’ve had a major hand in setting the draft board in preferably a consistent, winning organization, and you can see their fingerprints all over the roster.”
With roughly $61MM in projected cap space for this offseason, the Titans are near the top of the NFL in terms of financial flexibility. That, coupled with the No. 1 pick, will be among the attractions for GM candidates in Tennessee. Making major additions at a number of positions will be needed for the team to return to the postseason, something the new hire will have a role in (although clearly the same will be true for Brinker). Finding stability in the front office and on the sidelines represents a key organizational goal for the Titans, and the next step in that process will be another general manager hire.
Quietly turning into a dumpster fire over there
agreed, quietly one of the most destructive owners in pro sports.
I read this as ‘Titans hire Rae Carruth’.
Did not have Rae Carruth on my bingo card for today
I don’t even think Rae Carruth had Rae Carruth on his bingo card for today lol.
Rae Carruth would be a killer at this job
Lol that he would be!
SF was happy for that comp pick!
The lady that owns the Titans is a real piece of work. I heard her baseline success for the head coach is “beat the Texans especially in Houston!”
I can’t imagine with all her blessings carrying that kind of grudge.
After all these years.
And against a whole city no less…..
You mean like Michigan and Ohio State fans freaking out over beating each other
Pretty sure the Ravens who were once the Browns before moving have held on to a deep seated hatred for the Steelers for over half a century.
Michigan Ohio State had been playing since 1897
Yeah, but it really dates back to the Toledo War in 1835. There were still people alive in both states when the football rivalry started that remembered that war.
Somewhere in Baltimore, Derrick Henry is smiling and thanking he is gearing up for a playoff run.
The Same Guy that Butted Heads with Mike Vrabel, that ownership Chose over their HC. Maybe Vrabel wasn’t the problem huh
This isn’t true. Vrabel got fired because he walked into the owner and didn’t know his bounds. Carthon obviously didn’t have the power since he’s gone a year later, yet some of you still continue running with the narrative. Fact is they fired the wrong person three years ago when they got rid of Robinson instead of Vrabel.
No Robinson got burnt out in the end. Look at his last few drafts plus trading AJ Brown away? He also had a few bad signings. Granted Ran Carthon had an up hill battle, having to start over at the QB position. At the end of the day, Vrabel being let go as the HC was the biggest mistake.
He still built a very good roster there. Those guys don’t grow on trees. Vrabel is an average coach.
Since Baltimore is wanting a new stadium and the city doesn’t have the money, Robinson is working with Musk to buy the team and move it to San Diego so they can have a franchise again. You have more in about two months. I know musk purchased the name from the NBA conquistadors so I think that will be their name when they move from Baltimore.
What’re you smoking? Elon Musk has shown zero interest in owning a sports team.
This Owner is stupid. Ignorant, & will completely ruin this Franchise!
Will? They are sitting with the #1 pick without a GM or QB while relying on a 2nd year coach who hasn’t proven anything. I’m pretty sure Strunk has already ruined that franchise
She really wants to join that select tier of “owners everyone knows the name of because they suck at being owners.”
Joining the Jets, Fins, Jags, Bears, Cards, & Carolina list of bad/incompetent ownership.
The Giants have bad/incompetent ownership. Miami, Carolina, and Arizona are at least competitive.
No, Arizona has one of the bad owners. People hate working for Michael Bidwell.
And he is an improvement over his father.
Giants don’t get talked about enough for having a bad ownership. If they hadn’t lucked out into Eli forcing his way there and winning two SBs the Maras would be down there with all the other bad owners. Helps when you share a building with an even worse owner too.
Miami is pretty bad, Ross just doesn’t meddle or make as many headlines as the other owners since McDaniels has been there. Carolina too, Tepper has shown to be a terrible owner since he took over.
Cowboys and Jerry Jones need to be on that list too. Stephen Jones does a good job reeling in his dad…the Cowboys would be a full blown dumpster fire if Jerry had his way with no oversight.
The children of the original owners are not living up to their parents. John Mara seems particularly clueless.
Sorry. I left The Factory of Sadness off the list.
How could you forget Jimmy Haslam?! 🙂
Or Mark Davis.
By my count, that comes to 9 bad owners; parity my backside.
Bad owners cause there to be less parity than the league rules, IMO, but I would argue that the league with the single most valuable position in all of sports finds it difficult to attain the same level of parity as the other major North American sports. I think parity is still there, though. Since 2009, there have been 12 unique winners across 16 Super Bowls, including a stretch with 8 unique winners (Steelers, Saints, Packers, Giants, Ravens, Seahawks, Patriots, and Broncos).
Speaking of the Patriots, I think they’re a prime example of parity being alive to an extent. It seems like Kraft may not be anywhere near the level of owner he was getting credit for. The Patriots dominated the league for 20 years and now can’t even sniff the playoffs and his impatience may well be hindering them. The Chiefs have taken their place. Soon they’ll fall off and maybe someone like the Commanders, Chargers, or Bengals with a top QB can finally win one. Or maybe a team with a great head coach like the Vikings or Lions.
I’ll stop there. I’m getting long-winded.
Yeah, I don’t know members who could be accused of being long-winded…
I almost typed “I’m starting to sound like AK :)” but I respect you too much as a poster and appreciate the thought you put into your comments.
Couple of terrible drafts to show he was not it. Still think they went astray when they fired Robinson and kept Vrabel initially.
Robinson’s last three first rounders were Isaiah Wilson, Caleb Farley, and Treylon Burks. The best player on the Titans from those three drafts is Roger McCreary. Carthon was starting from a position of basically zero good cost-controlled starters on the team already in house. To hire a guy to that situation and only give him two years is kind of ridiculous.
Kind of missing that the owner allowed him to go on a spending spree last couple years esp in 2024
Pollard
Ridley
Hopkins
Snead sign and trade
Awuzie
Cushenberry
Boyd who knows Callahans system
There were expectations given the fact they gave Levis a better oline via free agency and draft, better WRs, did their best to replace Henry.
To finish with the first overall pick after all that investment is nothing short of a failure and likely contributed to him getting canned.
They had to acquire a bunch of vets because Robinson’s last three drafts left them so bereft of starters. They took a swing on drafting Levis and they took a swing on putting vets around him. I think swinging on a quarterback is worthwhile even if it misses. I didn’t like the Ridley signing at the time, and Snead has been a disaster, but the others aren’t that big a deal.
Sure. But when you go out spend money on free agents there’s expectations you’re competitive esp based on how much they allowed him to spend.
They weren’t competitive at all. Finished with the first overall pick.
Division has been wide open for a long time. Not like Houston is the powerhouse they were having lost Dell and Diggs. Jaguars don’t have an offense and colts don’t have a qb. At worst titans should have finished with a winning record possibly in contention for a playoff spot but barely miss it. Didn’t come close to that.
I think that’s a very unrealistic view of this roster. Even with injuries, Houston and Indy have much better rosters. Once Levis was too big a mess, there was no elevating the rest of this team. And once Levis was a clear flop, better to be number one overall.
Tennessee finished 6-11 last year 4th in the division.
Coming into 2024 they spent big money on offense annd money to improve their secondary and had a 4th place schedule to work with.
The biggest issue is they were 0-6 in the division this year losing to Mac jones and Joe Flacco once and Anthony Richardson once where Jonathan Taylor ran for 218 yards.
They also lost to the bears and jets.
Looking at their schedule
Shoulda beat jets
Shoulda beat bears
Shoulda beat colts
Shoulda beat jaguars
Shoulda beat colts
Shoulda beat jaguars
That’s 6 more wins which puts them at 9-8 right in playoff contention.
I don’t agree with your shouldas, but even if I did, wouldn’t that be a coaching issue?
Carthon attached himself to Levis by trading up in the draft to get him. Callahan was brought in to make Levis better but Callahan isn’t tied to Levis same way Carthon was.
Carthon’s job was dependent on Levis being the franchise QB. The fact Tennessee regressed from 6-11 to 4-13 with better supporting cast has more to do with Levis not being a franchise QB than with coaching.
All the coaching in the world cant fix bad decision making. You can do how ever many film sessions, however many drills, however many simulations but Will Levis making poor decisions is a Will Levis issue.
I don’t think a GM should be fired because a second round quarterback doesn’t turn out to be a franchise quarterback. More teams should be taking shots on QBs and then moving on. It’s not like a Zach Wilson situation.
Trading up for Levis gave the Cardinals two pretty decent finds in the 2023 draft
Bj Olujlari and Garrett Williams while Titans walked away with Levis and Sharpe. Cardinals also walked away with either Reiman or Adams. If it’s Adams Arizona walked away with 3 starters from the Levis deal.
I’d agree if Carthon blew a 2nd round pick and it washed out but trading up for him while the other team walks away with starters doesn’t look good for Carthon. Similar to what got Robinson canned- the Aj Brown trade
Shoulda beat?
At a certain point, you’re the team everybody “shoulda beat”
Wilson and Farley were just unfortunate situations. Burks was a panic pick after trading Brown, which imo wasn’t his call. You can only do what ownership lets you do with their money. His overall work was well above average. They had great offensive and defensive lines most of his time there, and after Tannehill hit the end, they needed to develop another QB. Willis seemed to be fine in Green Bay this year when he had to play, yet Vrabel’s staff had him looking like a deer in headlights.
Wilson was a reach at the time and character problems were not a secret. He was 57th on Arif Hasan’s consensus big board. All those picks went unusually badly, but truly getting no good cost controlled starters outside of maybe McCreary from three drafts is a disaster.
Fact is he built an AFC championship level team that could compete with Ryan Tannehill at QB and Todd Downing calling the plays. That’s not too shabby of roster building. He’s been gone three years now, so all of these holes are Carthon’s problem, and he failed miserably.
I’m not saying Robinson never did good work, but the bottom fell out completely from his team building and he left a mess behind.
Ouch. Levis was sandwiched between Joey Porter JR and Sam LaPorta, and in the first round Skoronski was the pick before Gibbs Detroit really should be sending a thank you basket to Carthon.
Classic reaching to fill needs.
100% agreed. That’s literally how franchises die and wither away.
Having the top pick in this draft isn’t worth it lol. Isn’t a qb worth the top pick nor a first round pick tbh. Maybe Ward but his “business decision” in the bowl game should throw red flags up about his “loyalty” and “commitment” to a team. They need a qb so the new GM will need to find one quick or they’ll get the hook quickly too. Good luck with that trigger happy owner.
So is it worse to opt out completely or play half a game? The opt outs don’t seem to be harming draft stock so I’m not sure why playing a half more than those guys should be a negative.
And the cycle continues.
Worst team in arguably the worst division in the NFL. Now picking 1st overall. Changes had to be made. Quickly.
And unless the owner is meddling in personnel and football decisions (e.g., as in Carolina, Cleveland, New York x 2, etc.) top brass should be held accountable.
But then there’s the whole four-year extension thing… SMH.
Titans have a well built o-line so they could get much better with the right choice at QB. Great GM opportunity.
I’m not sure if it’s actually well-built yet. Skornoski was a bright spot, but they were 21st in run block win rate, 22nd in pressures allowed (37.1%), 24th against the blitz (44.4%), and 29th in RB yards before contact per rush (0.66). They finished 28th or 29th in the league as a unit with a sub-60 grade, I believe. Levis actually got the ball out pretty quickly (2.68 seconds per dropback, which was tied for 3rd in the league among something like 45 qualified QBs) and was still sacked 41 times.
Idiot never should have fired Vrabel. Let’s get someone in there who knows what they are doing.
So he finally got “Ran” out of town….about time.
They should of kept the “Oilers” name
if LA can still be the Lakers and Utah can still be the Jazz, absolutely.
