At least one more game remains in Aaron Rodgers‘ Jets career, but it would come as no surprise if he were to be let go after the season ends. Retirement could ensue after that, but if the future Hall of Famer were to continue playing he may not have a long list of suitors.
Rodgers tore his Achilles in his Jets debut, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. He (along with head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas) remained in place for the start of the current season. Both members of the previous regime have since been fired, though, and on the whole Rodgers’ play has not matched expectations. A new pair of decision-makers will be in place well before the start of the 2025 season, and a reset under center would be an understandable approach leaving Rodgers with an uncertain outlook. He and the team have not discussed what will happen once the season ends, but he is well aware a trip to free agency could be looming.
If that turns out to be the case, Rodgers would certainly be a notable name on the market. Given his age (41) and underwhelming output this season, however, teams could prefer to look elsewhere at the position. As Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post notes, some around the league believe a tepid market could be in place for the four-time MVP given his level of play and the off-the-field matters which have increasingly become an aspect of his career.
“No way are [the Jets] bringing him back,” an anonymous general manager told La Canfora. “And I don’t see anyone signing him to be their starter. The Giants won’t do it. The Saints won’t do it. The Raiders have to go young. Does he take a huge pay cut and fight for a job somewhere? Can you see him doing that? Where’s the fit?”
As usual, several teams are in position to make notable moves at the quarterback spot this offseason, and a number of veterans will no doubt be on the move shortly. With questions over the upside of many passers in the upcoming draft class, more emphasis could be placed on finding short-term answers under center. Any number of teams could show interest in Rodgers as a result, but a short-term pact with a value well below the top of the QB market would be expected in that case.
The longtime Packer has made it clear his preference would be to remain with the Jets for 2025, but a post-June 1 release would yield considerable cap savings (next year in particular) while allowing New York to start over at the quarterback spot. It is uncertain at this point if the team will take that route, but if so Rodgers’ future would consist of hanging up his cleats or attempting to find a new team for the second time in his career.
The Jets are kind of in the situation in for a penny….in for a pound…
Aaron Rodgers arm is still pretty good…he can still move… I don’t really like any of the Quarter Backs in the upcoming draft and I am not all that thrilled with the free agent Qbs either.
I am hopeful that Rodgers can rework his contract….get a decent head coach and OC…give AA RON a second chance for what it is worth and get that defense straightened out and maybe they grab a wildcard…next seasob……that is how I feel about it
AR can’t extend plays. This year, he was never really on the same page as his WRs and this was year 2.
Well, I still would give him another chance
I know it might be weird, but the Jets need to stabilize this thing and if they throw everything out after this season, that is a Dumpster Fire that may never be put out
These guys are supposed to be professionals,. so see if they can work something out first, so there is a reset with AR and the rest of the Jets
It’s hard to stabilize this thing when the chief disruptor is still your QB. Better to make a clean cut and give all the power back to the GM and coach.
Sherm…I do enjoy your posts but the JETS are in no mans land…they may be looking for both a Head Coach and a GM…the 2025 QB draft is so thin you can see through it and the JETS currently sit at pick number 7. Personally, I would keep Rodgers, he will get you into a top 2-5 draft position for 2026, trade down 2025 for picks and build for 2026 with better draft prospects at QB. JETS fans are long suffering so another year isn’t going to matter. Just a different opinion
Lefty, regardless of talent, I’d argue the Jets would be better off with almost anyone else at QB next season. If it was only his physical limitations holding the team back, maybe you could scheme around those. Rodgers is a big part of why that franchise is already a dumpster fire, though. He never takes accountability for anything, always blaming someone else. Reportedly, some players on the Jets can’t stand him. Running that back is a recipe for disaster.
I see your larger point about them needing to try to create some type of stability there, and I don’t disagree. Rodgers returning just isn’t the answer, imo. Honestly, I don’t know how they do it. The ownership situation is terrible, and it isn’t being run by competent football people with enough pull to stand up and say no to some of ownership’s ridiculous ideas.
Where does the “never take responsibility for anything”.come from, exactly? People post this all the time, but other than the Mike Williams incident (which in my mind was pretty overblown, especially since Williams admitted to being on a different page anyway), I’m genuinely curious to see what it is that people are referring to.
Dont even bother bro. Ive seen Aaron say “i need to play better” and people still complain about it. They just love to make random people villains so they can kick them while theyre down, least thats my theory lol
To me, the Williams incident was pretty bad. The ball was a little under thrown, and Williams slipped. Ok, those things happen. Rodgers claims Williams ran the wrong route, and maybe he did, I don’t know. But Aaron didn’t need to air that publicly. He chose to because it was intercepted. If it had hit the grass, I think it plays out differently.
His last season in Green Bay, he went on a little rant about how some of his teammates weren’t playing up to the standard and were making mistakes in the Washington game. Again, that’s a closed door thing that Aaron addressed on McAfee. He even had the audacity to suggest benching some of them. Aaron played ok, but he made sure it was known his QB coach (I think, iirc) gave him the highest single game grade there all season. Statistically, he had had better games.
Dude was on his WRs in camp that year.
I just don’t see him as a particularly good leader. When you’re the QB, you always get a larger share of the glory; but your also supposed to shoulder a bigger portion of the blame sometimes, it just comes with the job.
Some of that is fair. Some isn’t. Being on your WRs should be expected, no? The Williams thing also was a result of a reporter repeatedly asking Rodgers about that play. Rodgers at first actually tried to avoid answering it, but finally did after the reporter pushed him, and his explanation wasn’t bad when you watch it. I mean, Williams DID run the route terribly; Emmanuel Acho, among others, did a video describing it if you’re curious to see why. I just really think that element of it is overblown.
The poor leadership in my mind has less to do with that than it does his off-season efforts. Rodgers has, the last couple of years dating back to Green Bay, not given enough of his time to train up young receivers or get a rapport with new ones. It was worse in Green Bay, actually. Rodgers should have been working overtime getting a connection with his players. I get that the Packers screwed him, but that’s no excuse to not do your job and get better, especially after angling for that huge extension.
This has Raiders written all over it
They are done with him. If Garrett Wilson gets upset enough to request out they will move on from AR. You don’t give up a talent with 10+yrs of very good left for a cooked QB.
AR was cooked before he even got to NY. In fact I was glad when he went there because I knew we didn’t have to worry about the Jets in the AFC then. His career is over admit should be.
That’s a hell of a career you have planned for Wilson. I wouldn’t give him up either but predicting another 10+ years is very optimistic.
He’s 24 years old. Playing until he’s 34 is entirely possible
All but the best WR are done by 30-31 these days.
Adam, the dry cleaners called to say your Capt. Obvious uniform is ready for pick up 🙂
be better. what good does your comment do? nothing. you are a terrible person, way to start the year off strong
I suppose we should all take a lesson from you on how to provide insightful comments 🙂
Better yet, why don’t you become a writer and show us all how it’s done?
It would be nice if the writer included his stats to give an idea of if he deserves a deal next year so since they can’t be bothered to include facts allow me to
16 games played
345/548 63% 3623 yards
24td 10 int
48.3 qbr
With a qbr like that I can’t see any team signing him
Of those 203 incompletions it would be interesting to know how many were due:
To drops by receivers.
To throwaways because of pressure
To receivers running the wrong routes
To receivers not properly adapting to the path of the thrown ball
To receiver and quarterback not being on the same page when improvising
To just plain bad throws by the quarterback
To good defense by the opposing secondary
To being used just to stop the clock
To throwing earlier than designed as a result of pressure
Not a fan of the player.
Numbers can be misleading unless they are fully analyzed.
Doesn’t take much to analyze a 48.3 qbr
To add to that 25th out of 33 qbs (ESPN)
So you cant see a team signing a 25th best QB? Really? You know theres 32 teams lol QB needy teams will pick up QBs. There will be someone willing to extend Rodgers a contract, think its more on Rodgers decision if he decides to play again
As of last week, the Jets have been edged by the Browns in dropped passes. The Browns have 39 to the Jets’ 33. Not sure what they are this week.
Stats don’t tell the full story. The previous QB won more games with less talent, yet he was cast aside as incompetent.
Thats because he was incompetent. The previous team won the games, not the QB. The defense and special teams was elite last year. Not this year.
Experts predicted this year’s “Dream team” would make the Super Bowl, so explain what went wrong. All those additions were foiled by a narcissistic QB
Any reasonable Jets fan knew this wasn’t a Super Bowl team. We expected the playoffs, which wasn’t an unreasonable expectation
I agree. I love this site, but I should never have to look up stats and contracts after reading a 5 paragraph article
Happens too often
Depends on who needs a qb
For a team looking to tank for a better qb class, he’s the perfect fit
There’s much better options than Aaron Rodgers to tank a season. He’s the one you (over)pay to come in and shred any hint of team chemistry
A powerhouse team without a QB on the verge of a SB is the only option here. Like TB Bucs were missing a QB, so that was a perfect match for Tom Brady. I don’t see one of those teams this year, tho.
Well, the Bucs signed a few players too to go all in, but you do have a point. Unfortunately for Rodgers, the influx of QBs last year really didn’t leave him with much in the way of future options. Nearly every team that’s missing a QB has one in the wings to develop (like Minnesota or Atlanta), and those that don’t will probably go young (like the Giants or Saints).
Right now, the Saints and Raiders look like the only options, but I’m not especially high on that possibility. I suppose that there’s an outside chance that the Steelers could drop Wilson/Fields for Rodgers, if we’re talking possibilities.
Rodgers also the disadvantage of becoming a free agent in a limited market where he’s also going to have two other veteran free agents coming available in Darnold and Cousins who will appeal to that same limited group of teams that Rodgers would. Darnold has had by far the best season of the three, even if it’s a result of being on the best team of them. He’ll probably be first in the bridge QB list in comparison to the more expensive Cousins (who also may retire) or Rodgers.
I’d say more likely the criteria is a dumpster fire desperate enough to sign him.
Especially after seeing Darnold and Baker this season , GMs are going to prioritize prime and coachable.
Raiders might take him tho
If he has anything left in the tank and is willing to take $25M a year, the Steelers should explore as an option. Wilson is definitely not the long term option unfortunately, and we all saw that Fields is not effective. Put him in a situation where is a game manager with a strong defense just like Peyton Manning was at the end.
No chance in hell do I want that drama queen in Pittsburgh. I can do without his arrogant smug attitude. The problem with the Steelers is the head coach. He wants to run the ball and win with defense
What about the chemistry between Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers? Tomlin already couldn’t stand Mason Rudolph and Rodgers has five times more attitude than Rudolph.
I’d take my chances with Russ over Rodgers every day and twice on Sunday. Rodgers is literally season to season at this point, at least you can build even a short-term team with Wilson
Cowboys could use a qb.
Cowboys could use much more than just a qb
Qb rb wr linebackers dbs safety coach GM Owner.
2025 is the 30 year anniversary since Jerry ran Jimmy Johnson out of town and has made it to 0 super bowls since
Speaking of them Cowboys, I wouldn’t mind Cooper Rush going to the Jets via trade or free agent signing. Git ‘er done type who gives his team a spark.
Ironic to see people bashing AR but somebody actually wanting Cooper Rush to replace him considering Rush is one of the worst rated QBs in the NFL. Rodger’s ‘floor’ is much higher than Rush’s ‘ceiling.’
But close to a 40-50 million difference. If you’re going to lose anyways might as well save some money
Seems a lot of knowledge here (maybe) and I don’t care what Aaron does.
These ‘awards’ that players receive “player of the week” – what exactly does that get them?
Piece of paper that say whoopee?
A plaque?
A $100?
Or it nothing more than a worthless ‘pat on the back’?
If he would take $15MM w/incentives I can see Seattle trading Geno for a 3rd round pick ( or worse) , sign Rodgers, draft Dart and hope for a healthy Walker all year. A 3 headed monster of Rodgers, Howell and Dart better than extending Geno at $40MM per. Rodgers seems to have gotten more viable as a QB as the season progressed so perhaps wasn’t fully back from injury..worth roll of the dice
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Maybe if he wasn’t such a tool as a person or an admitted ahuyasca junkie he’d have better luck. That combined w/being over 40 yrs ol w/waning abilities doesn’t paint a very pretty picture. What will he do w/o all eyes on him ? Dancing w/ol wannabes next up.
I can’t see any team in the nfl wanting to add that clown to the locker room. He’s toast and he’s not going to take a backup job. even if he would, he’d be throwing the starter under the bus every week on the podcast. He’s nothing but a distraction that divides a team.
Of course he’ll have a strong FA market. He just won’t get his way with roster moves.
IF Wilson leaves, the only option might be the Steelers because Mike Tomlin has proven he can manage mentally ill divas.
He can handle the divas? Really? He let brown walk all over him. He couldn’t handle dionte johnson, so they traded him and now george pickens is begging mahomes to save him. The problem with the Steelers is the head coach. 3 playoff wins in 14 years says a lot
Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season. Your beloved Bill Belichick got fired when his most recent NFL team went 4-13.
Time for a forever Ayahuasca
You mean there’s not a big market for an arrogant, self-righteous, self-important, attention-starved 40-year old douche? No way.
Rodgers: I had no weapons in Green Bay.
Also Rodgers: I want the same weapons I had in Green Bay.
Some good entertainment on this thread. Rodgers, Wilson and Adams will be back and ready to work next training camp. They will bring in new coaching and management and hopefully, the defense and offensive line will be better.
There are no younger talent options at QB, unless they could make a move for McCarthy, Fields or a cheap Pickett.
Reading a lot of “if” scenarios here regarding pay and bridge to Super Bowl.
Here’s another “if”
If he’d reconcile himself to shutting up in the media then he’d be more intriguing than his salary demand
But that’s never going to happen.
He doesn’t just do post-game clubs about his receivers, he goes on broadcasts talking about the owner and the owners sons.
The behind the scenes owners/partnerships can’t have that and those who love the spotlight have proven to be sensitive & volatile and don’t want that
We’ve all seen great players decline and voluntarily walk away from sports.
This guy’s decline hasn’t objectively been all that dramatic (all things considered) but he’s talking himself out of the NFL. In fact I’d say he’s talked himself out of it already … possibly voluntarily
Cleveland will call, they are desperate.
Guys are not getting better at 41. He’s at the end of the road. Plus he’s a self absorbed prima donna. Go away already, you’re annoying.
Well, Many Washed QBs do not have strong Free Agent Markets.
I would not be shocked. It’s either the Raiders or Retirement for him. The Jags are possible if they get a stupid offer for Lawernce, and Tony Kahn is an idiot and would do it.
Aaron Rodgers looks more and more like Kenny Stabler these days. Ride or die with the Raiders for a couple of years sounds like fun, looks like throwback.
Aaron Rodgers got stuck in a crappy position. A ignorant coach coupled with an incompetent GM, and a meddling owner. Who could succeed in that environment? The sports writers don’t help and the fans expect miracles. The environment in the locker room in New York is such that everybody tries to blame each other for their shortcomings so the press and fans won’t target them. When you throw your brothers under the bus what do you think is going to happen? That coupled with a 41 year old QB who the coach wants to play the game like a 20 year old doesn’t bode well for success. Personally I would give AR another year with a new coach and GM. QB prospects have to be better next year rather than this and the team could do worse than having a future hall of famer as a bridge to the next can’t miss, Tom Brady reminding, future hall of famer that’s still a redshirt sophomore at Sweet Potato state college in Bumbershoot, Iowa.
Rodgers is now intimating that Week 18 vs. Miami could be his final NFL game.
For the Jets as a whole, it’s NOT “all about the quarterback” when they’ve blown six 4th-quarter leads this term and the defense always gets flagged.
He had a legit #1 receiver, a talented lead running back, a serviceable tight end, and a top 5 defense, not to mention he convinced them to go out and get his buddy Lazard. Just stop it already
The “top five” defense has given up leads in the 4th quarter how many times this year? Was it 6 or was it 8? Talented running back? Does he play the violin or something? He sure isn’t talented at running. And a #1 wide receiver with an attitude. Yeah, sounds like a winner to me. If you have an incompetent head coach who believes his 41 year old QB can still play like a 20 year old or make 70 yard passes to receivers who will probably drop the ball anyway why are you blaming AR?
Please take your trolling and go somewhere else because you obviously have no idea what you are talking about pertaining to football.
We will hear lots from him, retire..play etc. He does love the drama. The Jets have many needs. Not sure why though a QB away and gave up so much. They need a line bas!
