We’ve already written a bit on the topic of new University of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick securing a job for his son, Steve Belichick, as part of his negotiations. An updated report discloses that the younger Belichick will head to Chapel Hill and join his father when his season concludes with bowl season, per Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports.
Steve, 37, is currently concluding his first season as defensive coordinator at the University of Washington. Despite coming off a loss in the College Football Playoff final last year, the Huskies had plenty of room for improvement on defense. Belichick took a team that finished 99th in total defense and 56th in scoring defense in 2023, to 26th and 44th in those respective stats this year.
Before calling the defense in Seattle, Belichick worked a number of position coaching gigs under his father in New England. He joined the Patriots coaching staff in 2012, shortly after graduating from Rutgers as a lacrosse defenseman and football long snapper. He started as a defensive assistant, a role he held for four years, before getting his first position coaching gig over safeties. After three years in that role, he was given a more extensive role over all defensive backs for a season before moving to coach outside linebackers from 2020-23.
Steve will have his work cut out for him once again at North Carolina. He will inherit a defense that is 78th in total defense and 91st in scoring defense. With a change of coaching staffs, they can also expect a number of players to hit the transfer portal, though the portal may be more beneficial to them as kids may be intrigued with the idea of being coached by Bill Belichick.
Steve may not be the only former Belichick staffer to land his second college job in the last two years. Per NFL beat reporter Josina Anderson, Ole Miss senior analyst Joe Judge could be another name headed to Chapel Hill. Judge’s experience in coaching for most of his career was concerning special teams, but he did try his hand at some offensive position coaching here and there near the end of his tenures in New England. Anderson reports that Judge may be looking for an increased offensive role at North Carolina if he joins and if Belichick is willing.
Oh look nepo baby gets another job from daddy
Lmao Steve’s leaving University of Washington as their defensive coordinator after posting excellent numbers in 2024 to take a lesser gig at UNC. Dude could take pretty much any DC job in college football after his success as Washington DC if he wanted.
Bro, I understand you like Steve, and I like you, love butkers speech but to pretend like hasn’t benefited from his dad’s position is just not accurate. Which 20 something year old kid with no football playing experience gets a senior defensive position on an nfl staff, which is parlayed into a high end college coaching position, and is the favorite for the unc position once his dad retires/moves to the nfl.
I’m not saying he’s not smart and talented but to pretend like he’s a product of his hard work and intellectual prowess and grinding it out until he’s gotten recognized is simply untrue.
Steves actually proven to be a great college DC. Without his father and with a defense that lost starters to the NFL. He worked this year at Washington without daddy getting him the job and without daddy being involved in any capacity and succeeded.
If he was unemployed like his dad and was offered the job sure nepo baby syndrome or if he sucked at his job was bound to be fire and daddy’s saving him sure nepo baby syndrome.
But this isn’t an example of nepo baby at all.
He’s coming off a successful run as Washington’s DC, could leave for probably a more premier gig such as an SEC opening but he’s choosing to go be part of his dads program which is a step down from his current gig.
Would you rather be DC at Washington or UNC? Pretty obvious answer as to which is the more prominent school in college football.
Steve’s literally opting out of pursing more higher profile gigs to spend time with his dad who’s not getting any younger these days. Hardly a nepo baby situation when you’re taking in a lesser gig willingly.
All reports are that he’s going to get the had coach position once bill retires. So I don’t think it’s fair to present the situation as if he’s being the devoted son your painting him out to be. Not that he’s doing anything wrong he’s taking the opportunity that presented in front of him. Additionally I’m not saying he’s a product of his father or that he doesn’t have the innate qualities to be a coach. What I’m saying is that he would not be in the position he’s currently in without his father giving him a head start and providing him with the necessary connections to progress up the ladder. Not that he’s done anything wrong or that I harbor any disdain for the position he’s in. If you define nepotism as one getting ahead of others based on factors other than intrinsic ability than I don’t it’s fair to say Steve hasn’t be from some level of nepotism. Again that does not mean he isn’t talented or qualified, I’m sure there are other candidates just as qualified and he’s taken advantage of the position he’s in, just as you and I would have. I just think to say that he’s a product of a completely meritocratic system is just not accurate.
I see nothing wrong here, a person generally trusts family over everyone else.
She’s not very cute. I wonder what her thoughts on her 72 year old dad dating a 24 year old are?
Bill gets the UNC job. Bill hires his son on his staff. Bill decides to quit after a year or two. Bill recommends his son replace him. Bingo. Son has a lucrative head coaching job at a major school. Thanks to dad. I think that’s what they call nepotism or very close to it. Stinks.
