As the NFL regular season comes to a close and college prospects are making their final amateur appearances, focus for many NFL teams is shifting to the 2025 NFL Draft. While many sources seem to have narrowed the field of potential first-round quarterbacks to two players, there are reportedly some scouts who believe taking any quarterback on Day 1 “would be a mistake,” per Dane Brugler of The Athletic.
According to a post from Brugler, an AFC scout commented on the matter, saying, “Man, I feel bad for the teams trying to find one (quarterback) in this group.”
There are two obvious options for teams currently looking at a first-round quarterback: Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. After Ward and Sanders, there’s a big perceived dropoff in quarterback talent in this year’s draft class with other prospects like Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart all being projected as Day 2 or 3 picks. Georgia passer Carson Beck, who recently declared for the draft, forgoing one final year of eligibility (granted because of COVID-19), was at one point viewed as a first-round option, but after a disappointing redshirt season and UCL surgery, his draft stock took a considerable hit.
As for Ward and Sanders, it’s hard to imagine a world in which neither prospect hears their name called on the first night of the draft. The Giants sent general manager Joe Schoen and director of player personnel Tim McDonnell to the Pop-Tarts Bowl to watch Ward play in the first half this past weekend. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Raiders assistant general manager Champ Kelly was in attendance, as well. Schoen, along with scouts from his Giants and the Falcons, was also in attendance to watch Sanders take on the Utes about a month and a half ago.
The Giants (currently set to pick fourth overall) are one of six teams inside the projected top-10 picks of the draft with an interest in adding a quarterback. The Titans (No. 2), Browns (No. 3), Panthers (No. 6), Jets (No. 7), and Raiders (No. 8) have all been viewed as possibilities to go after a first-round passer, as well.
The need to fill such a crucial role as quarterback has a tendency to inflate some prospects’ draft stocks. In the 2024 NFL Draft, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and according to some sources, Drake Maye were all viewed as the likely first-round passers for most of the draft process. As the draft drew nearer and it became more obvious that some teams would need additional help at quarterback, prospects like Michael Penix, J.J. McCarthy, and Bo Nix all found their draft stock being bumped from Day 2 or 3 to Day 1.
Because this phenomenon is likely to take effect once again this year, even if Ward and Sanders were not considered first-round options — which, to be clear, many scouts do view them to be — they would still likely find themselves on stage at Lambeau Field on April 24. In order to simulate this effect, some have claimed that this year’s versions of Ward and Sanders would’ve ranked as QB4 and QB5, in any order, in last year’s quarterback crop, placing them firmly in the top ten draft picks for that class, as well. In fact, the often-desperate need for young quarterback talent may even bring players like Beck, Milroe, or Dart back into first-round consideration with Ward and Sanders.
There’s still plenty of time until we arrive at Day 1 of the draft. Between now and then, we will see College Football Playoff performances, the NFL Scouting Combine, and pro days around the country. Many quarterbacks and other prospects will see their draft stock rise and fall throughout the next few months. At this point, though, Ward and Sanders seem to have cemented themselves as top five picks, regardless of what some scouts believe their value to be.
Yikes
I think Cam Ward can be really good
Not sure about the others.
I think Shedeur will be good. Cam playing only to break a record and then quitting on his team is a huge red flag for me
Fake news
Nothing but career backups and busts in this draft.
If I was say, the Titans, I’d try and trade for JJ McCarthy. The Vikings could get a haul for him and already have what they drafted him for in the first place- a franchise QB in Darnold.
It will be really hard to line up two sides on a McCarthy trade. No chance a team trying to get him is giving up a first rounder for a guy who didn’t play all year because of a serious knee injury and it doesn’t make sense for the Vikings to sell low on him.
I would agree but a team will take both in the 1st round. Teams get crazy when looking for a new QB. If they are there at picks 29&20 teams will move up to grab them for the extra year.
My personal choice is we trade Geno. Sign Minshew or one of the other FA back up QB. Then use our first pick on a DL or OL.crowding who is available. Draft the opposite if still there. Third round start looking at.QBs. If there is a good one there grab a QB. Sorry if there is misspellings in this. Time for my optometrist visit and new glasses. I can hardly see it.
I want to trade Geno because they won’t and shouldn’t extend him. If they don’t I believe he will pout and be a pain in their facility. He has shown his maturity especially during the Buffaloe game. One act of madness is ok. He got into it with his players again some is ok but he did it a couple times. Then he sat on the bench and pouted until time to go back and contribute to the PeeWee level. Not sure what value they can get for him but a 3rd or 4th would work. If there is not much down the line bundle later picks. We don’t need a ton but the QB spot will not be filled this year. Don’t reach for a QB wait until next year.
Yikes
Geno has no trade value so he’s either cut or restructured. As a Coug fan, can we stop with Minshew? Live Gardner but he’s not an NFL starter and far worse than Geno.
The QB coming out of this draft that has the best career will be a QB taken after the 1st round.
Ewers is my pick for the best from this draft.
Inconsistent and mistake prone, even in college and on a very good team. I wouldn’t want to place a high round bet on Ewers.
I wouldn’t either, but there’s not much competition. These QBs are all players whose career will be decided by which team they end up on, much more than their starting ability level.
No Nix was universally regarded as not a first rounder and was taken for need. I’d say the broncos are happy with him, and I’m guessing the Raiders would have been as well had he lasted to them.
Cam Ward is gonna suck
When Bleacher Report’s comparison for Cam Ward is Geno Smith, you know it’s bad. Dude’s gonna lead the league in turnovers
As a guy who watches a lot of CFB. Not a huge fan of the QBs coming out. Then again I’m not an evaluator.
Perhaps this will be the draft where teams finally realize the value of putting a quality OL in place before reaching for a new QB savior.
Jalen Milroe to a team that can afford to sit him for couple seasons like Jordan Love, I think he will be decent. He’s got the physical abilities and has shown progress in the last 2 seasons in college. Draft him day 2 and get a bridge guy.
This crop has guys with exciting abilities, but that doesn’t mean they should be starting as rookies.
Milroe probably has the greatest potential between his arm strength and athleticism if he’s lucky to fall into a situation where he can sit and learn for a year or two. As a Steelers fan, if they re-sign Russ and draft Milroe I’d be underwhelmed since there’s more significant holes to address but still happy enough.
Milroe reminds me
Of Richardson. Very similar abilities. Also bith kinda raw. Not sure I’d go high on Milroe. He’s a big boom or bust guy.
Difference is Milroe played 2 full seasons while Richardson played 9 games. If you watch games from beginning of 23 season and end of season/24 season, You can see the difference in his development. Plus like I said – day 2 pick as opposed to top 5.
You make some great points. I guess if I was to advised Milroe I’d tell him to go back to school. We’ve seen what deboer has done with 2 years of Penix. I feel he could really help out Milroe too.
Why were the Falcons scouting Sanders? It’s possible they were there for someone else. I think it’s safe to say they’re spoken for at QB.
Didn’t both Sanders declare? Could have been scouting the DB.
Well, we know that they’re not afraid to take a second QB high in the draft…
It’s really telling about the QB position and honestly a joke that there’s even a consideration of Milroe being a 1st round pick. These nfl teams never learn. I hope they see the success of Daniels and Nix and realize these kids need to know how to play the position if you’re going to pick them round 1 and they can’t be a project like Richardson or Milroe would be if you’re taking them that high.
Yes, the early success of QB’s who started 3+ years at QB should sober up GM’s. It’s great to see.
Jameis Winston 2.0
I see why you say that, but Winston, for all of his faults, never quit on his team midgame. I wonder how Schoen and the others felt about traveling to a bowl game to see Ward and then learning that he was going to sit after breaking the record.
Any team drafting a QB in the first 2 rounds this year should have their front offices cleared out!!!!!
