The Jets are expected to move on from Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2025 campaign. However, there’s a chance the quarterback doesn’t even stick on the active roster through the end of the 2024 season.
[RELATED: Jets Likely To Move On From Aaron Rodgers In 2025]
Dianna Russini of The Athletic writes that the team is considering multiple options regarding Rodgers’ roster status. While no decision has been made, Russini says it “appears increasingly likely” that the quarterback could be benched for the stretch run of the season. The Jets could also help Rodgers save face by placing the veteran on injured reserve. After suffering his season-ending Achilles tear in 2023, the 40-year-old has dealt with hamstring, knee, and ankle injuries this season, so an IR stint wouldn’t be completely unfounded.
There are even some around the NFL who wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets simply cut Rodgers before the end of the 2024 season. The financial implications of such a move would make this route unlikely. In addition to his untenable (albeit prorated) $66MM dead cap hit for 2024, the Jets would also be hit with a $25.5MM charge for the 2025 campaign. If the Jets were to designate Rodgers as a post-June 1 cut, then the front office could actually realize some savings (around $9.5MM of cap relief). While a divorce seems inevitable, there’s really no benefit to the Jets being hasty and moving on now.
The Jets’ disappointing 2024 campaign has naturally led to both sides seeking fresh starts. It also sounds like the broken relationship between Rodgers and owner Woody Johnson may also be playing a role. We heard earlier this week that Johnson suggested benching the franchise star earlier this season, and Russini says the owner has “lost confidence” in Rodgers’ ability to guide the franchise to the postseason. On the other side, Rodgers’ relationship with Johnson has been “strained for months,” and while the quarterback intends to play in 2025, he isn’t enthusiastic about returning to the Jets.
If the Jets do bench Rodgers for the final chunk of games in 2024, then Tyrod Taylor would be the logical fill-in for the organization. What isn’t so clear is who would replace Rodgers in 2025. Russini points to Russell Wilson or a reunion with Sam Darnold, although the reporter is skeptical that either QB will leave their current situation. Russini also notes that Justin Fields, Daniel Jones, and previous target Derek Carr will likely be available, but none of those options provide much hope for contention.

The Jets are officially my ex team
Dan Synder killed the Redskins for me. After 7-9 years of losing, scandals, and everything else associated with that jerk, I quit caring.
Snyder’s gone, the Commanders are good again, plus they’re a double-digit favorite against bottom-feeding Dallas.
I grew up on the Redskins, not the Commanders. Sorry, name, and I’m not a bandwagon fan. I have 3 SB’s and plenty in Canton. Now I just rag bad teams and appreciate great ones.
You are right about that. The Commanders is a sorry/stupid name for a team. In fact, the only name that could possibly be worse is the racial slur that they used to go by.
You’re right, lark. Let’s make Native Americans completely invisible by erasing all the pro sports teams named in their honour.
Expunge to cover genocide tracks.
There is no other ways to honor Native Americans and their contributions without naming a team after the practice of scalping them.
Redskins was a mark of honour designating their slightly radiant copper skin in contrast to pale skins, who look unhealthy and struggle to live on the land.
Come to think of it, the pale skins haven’t changed much, just put on weight.
Several Native American tribes, including the Cherokee, Comanche, Oneida Indian Nation, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Navajo Nation, and various tribal councils from the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona and the Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes, publicly advocated for the Washington football team to change their name due to its offensive nature, with many citing the term as a racial slur. I don’t know what else to say. These tribes were not feeling honored.
And just as many representatives and members of those tribes confirmed that the name was not offensive and that they were dishonoured by being erased from US public culture.
If you are trying to get me to say that any issue is 100% endorsed by every member of the group impacted by the issue, then you will fail. There were strong feelings from Native americans on both sides of the issue. You have clearly made your descison on which side should be ignored and not have their feelings and beliefs honored. In the end, FedEx and Nike were the ones who chose which side would be heard and which would be ignored.
You’ve managed to erase Native Americans from the public sphere, together with FedEx and Nike. Does it make you feel better about your genocide now that Native Americans are invisible?
I wish I had the ability to erase things from history. Thanks for believing in my powers. I think that there are more important ways to include the contributions of Native Americans to our society and culture. You are suggesting that it can’t be done without the Redskins. It’s Redskins or nothing. I think that you are being a baby about it. I already said that I agree that no issue will have 100% endorsement from any group. We all know that many tribes find it offensive, and FedEx and Nike don’t want to touch it. Let it go already. We are using the Federalist System created by the Iroquois as the foundation of our Constitution. Maybe we could talk about that and let go of offense terms to name sports teams.
How did Nike or FedEx become authorities on anything except shoes and shipping?
You’ve managed to wipe out the Native Americans literally, and now you want to finish the job, remove them completely from the public space.
You try to turn Redskin into a slur – there’s nothing wrong with copper skin. Indeed they should be proud of it. Redskins didn’t travel around the word bombing other peoples back to the Stone Age, stealing their land and resources.
Hypocrisy and sanctimony are unbecoming garb.
Then why do you keep it up. Nike and FedEx are authorities on what they want to put their money behind and their names on. It doesn’t matter if I’m offended by the term, some large and important Native American tribes asked the league, the team, and the sponsors to stop using it and they did. I’m sorry this is so confusing for you.
When you’ve lost an argument, better to stop digging by seeking endorsements from straw men like FedEx and Nike. The Native Americans are dead and buried and now the teams named after them are mostly gone too. You can just pretend the whole two hundred genocides didn’t happen.
I’m glad you feel like a winner. Native American tribes are alive and well. I work for a non-profit that works closely with our local tribes. I’m glad you refuse to only acknowledge their existence if you can call your football team a racial slur. It doesn’t refer to their beautiful skin, it referred to the government paying for their scalps that were red with blood. Otherwise, we would call them the beautiful bronze skins. You really showed me though, you big winner you
You act like it’s cancel culture that “erased” Native Americans
The American Government working on behalf of Christians to wipe out all native Americans is what happened.
We can honor Native Americans today in other ways. Brainwashed bible thumper
Do we honour Native Americans? No, woke tools earnestly cancel the last remnants of Native American presence. With a sanctimonious smirk.
What is the opposite of woke? Intentionally ignorant!
They called it manifest destiny. It’s what God wanted!
Problem is white liberals only think it’s a racial slur.

Thank you for that link, plus3. I always appreciate a new perspective if there are people among the affected group who prefer it. Interesting read. Will have to dig deeper.
I live near 2 reservations and close to a 3rd. I talked to kids about the name Redskins and none of them had a problem with it. They wore all the Indian named teams gear from all sports. There were a few white guys that found a few Indians that were or were paid to be upset about it. The whole thing is from a group that thinks they know best what is offensive to another group. I hope they go back to the Redskins. This weekend was supposed to be one of the funnest rivalries of the NFL season. We all loved to play cowboys and Indians as kids. Then when we got older liked the grid iron version. Now some bleeding hearts have taken both away from us all. So sad.
Some people aren’t offended until someone tells them they are supposed to be offended.
All they had to do was change the logo to a red-skinned potato and everyone would have been happy.
Can’t believe you all still want to talk about this…but ok. The main point is that Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and other sports merchandisers refused to print what they considered to be a racial slur on hats and T-shirts, and companies like FedEx no longer wanted to be connected with it. It wasn’t “white liberals” it was smart rich people that saw the time had come for a rebranding.
Well you brought it up. There are 500 Native American nations. Highlighting a few isnt a very good sample size. Smart rich people didn’t see “the time had come”, they saw the political pressure from a leftist presidential administration. No different than canceling Aunt Jemima and the Cleveland Indians, and whatever else was canceled in the name of woke politics.
I never hear the term “woke” until some right-winger brings it up. The businesses associated with producing merchandise for the team refused to print it anymore. Most of the people I know that you would consider “woke” don’t watch football and refer to all sports as “sports ball”. You have all created a woke straw man that you like to blame for the changing tastes in culture. If the “woke” crowd was in charge, football would be banned and your supreme leader would be in a prison, not the White House. Money talks and BS walks. The money wasn’t right with the old name. Thats it.
People boycotting a brand for display “aunt” Jemima as a happy smiling slave ready to serve her masters isn’t unreasonable.
Same with “uncle” Ben.
What’s true cancel culture is hillbillies everywhere canceling bud light for casting a trans person on a commercial.
If you are a company in America you can not cast a trans person or Trumps voters will cancel you. Trans people need to stay hidden from American Rednecks.
If you saw Aunt Jemima or Uncle Ben as a slaves, you’re the problem.
Not true. Have you checked the news lately? White liberals are not in control.
One group feeling that way doesn’t speak for all native Americans.
That’s called stereotyping genius.
Just like some back people are okay being called the N word doesn’t mean a team should be called the Washington N-words.
Absolute morons in this country.
I’m glad you get to think who should be called what. That’s called being condescending and arrogant.
They were literally slaves tho
I’m telling anyone what to say or not to say.
I’m just saying it’s fair to not financially support a team named that.
About time as the Redskins have been bottom feeders for 30 plus seasons! Enjoy it while it lasts
And they lost lol
Only way to force change from a fan pressure perspective. Cowboys fans need to walk away from the team until Jones hires actual football people to run the organization.
Woody Johnson is also worthy of such a protest. He tanked this season when he fired a coach everyone liked because he wore a Lebanese flag pin. He has no one but himself to blame for this season going down the toilet.
Who’s gonna tell him? Rock , Paper, Scissors?
Nice idea but it wouldn’t matter. Jerry would just think the fans don’t realize how smart he is.
If it affected Jerry’s money, he’d notice, because that’s all he cares about. That’s why he sells tours of the team facilities year round lol
Moving on from Rodgers makes perfect sense at this point. But the Jets have a lot of other things to figure before they start looking for a QB for next season. They should find a coach who can make a QB look good rather than trying to find a QB who can make a coach look good.
The problem for the Jets is their reincarnation of Robert Irsay. Even when the Baltimore Colts had a good run in the mid-70s, Irsay’s shadow hung over them.
I agree, but I don’t see what the benching would do, exactly. They don’t have a developmental QB to start to see what he can do, and despite how poorly this year has gone, Rodgers hasn’t been awful. He’s been above average, which is pretty lukewarm and definitely not enough to win games with how poorly this team is playing. The biggest issue is how everyone on that team has given up. Firing Saleh just ripped the rug out from under this team, and it shows when they play-especially on defense.
Unless Rodgers is hurt or he wants to sit, they might as well play him to earn whatever money he’s due. Taylor is probably capable of winning a few games himself, and I doubt there’s any chance of the Jets keeping him for next year. If there were some sort of young developmental QB, I could see this making more sense, but I don’t know what this move does, unless they’re doing this because of Rodgers’ actual injury, in which case it wouldn’t really be a benching.
Rodgers has had a few spots here and there but overall he has at best been mediocre.
Regarding the benching, there are 2 reasons i see.
I think everyone knows he wont be back next season so what is the reason for keeping him at the qb? Taylor has a chance to be a bridge qb next season (seems thats what he ends up being always) so why not get him sync’d up in real game situations as majority of the team will be back next season as i think majority will be back next season.
2nd reason is lets just be petty and if Taylor does just as well you will know if it is a Rodgers issue or another issue and also might quiet Rodgers that a career backup did just as well as him.
You may have a point about Taylor, I can see that as a reason. But Rodgers hasn’t been that bad. He’s just not been great. He’s gotten waaayyy too much of the bland personally because of how people feel about him as an individual. But he’s not been as bad as people think, and he’s not the actual source of their struggles. Watching the games, I never got the impression that he was going to suddenly come alive and take control like he used to, but I also got the feeling that half the time a receiver was in the wrong spot or a lineman screwed up a blocking assignment. And, let’s remember, Rodgers isn’t giving up 26.2 points per game. That defense went from sixth in EPA before Saleh was fired to…32nd since. Rodgers himself was PFF’s third ranked passer three weeks in, for what it’s worth, with Saleh being fired two weeks later (couldn’t find a more recent ranking, but it’s safe to say that he’s dropped).
The team on paper isn’t top notch, but they really shouldn’t be this bad. On paper, there’s talent at running back, wide receiver, defensive line, cornerback, and linebacker. Even Rodgers will at worst be an average passer. That should be enough for ska winning record. The team has just lost its entire drive, and I put that squarely on Johnson’s midseason tantrum. Did he really think that this was going to make them better?
Don’t get me wrong, I blame Rodgers for a lot of things here-mainly his defense of Hackett and his noncommitment to the off-season program. The latter is really what was stupid and self-defeating, because he obviously is out of sync with his receivers outside of Wilson and Lazard. The connection is getting better, but it was obvious early in the year that it wasn’t there and that’s on Rodgers. He can still throw it well-see Lazard’s Hail Mary snag if you need to make sure-but given that Rodgers couldn’t play last year, he really needed to commit this past off-season to getting into a groove with his guys. That’s a leadership and rhythm thing.
I think there’s also the freedom to run an offense without Rodgers’ input or interference. I don’t blame a team for letting a veteran, HOF QB have a lot of input on the offense he is running. But since he is not part of the plan going forward it may be easier to evaluate the other players on the offense without his influence.
@Ak185 It could be the final 1 or 2 games on the schedule, but if/when Jordan Travis is healthy enough to play, he should get a shot.
That would make sense. If Travis can play, they may as well try him. Of course, it’s not just a question of health-not having any practice time at all would make running even a rudimentary offense very difficult. But if he can, he should.
It’s too bad the NFL doesn’t have relegation.
Using the NFL as a 32-team division, the bottom 4 teams (going into 11/24) are Jax, Tenn, Giants, Vegas.
You’d have to realign the NFL into 2 or 3 divisions for promotion/relegation to work. Why not?
It would make every league way better. No more tanking, ever. Keep AFC-NFC. Every team plays each team in their league once. Bottom team from each league automatically relegated, two second to bottom teams play in a relegation bowl. 3 teams promoted from XFL or whatever. The ability to get promoted to the NFL would make that league instantly incredible, also.
Mustard- It’s too bad the NFL doesn’t have accountability.
@Mustard I think I like this idea of relegation. It would probably ban teams like the Jets from the NFL for an indefinite (and deserved) length of time!
Put him on IR.
Malignant narcissistic personality disorder is a medical condition.
I say retain Rodgers for one year AND bring Rex Ryan back to coach! What fun that would be to watch!
Mr. Foot Fetish can continue his mouth-breather act at ESPN, thank you.
That would be wild. Bring in OBJ too. And while we’re at it, get Antonio Brown out of retirement. Hard Knocks is calling!
Must be something in the water or the air of that urban environment that influences owners to make poor decisions about their sports teams. Notice that many NY/NJ supporters were enthusiastic about the acquisitions on both teams initially and are now disappointed.
Might be the ‘City that never sleeps’ needs a nap.
Let Fire Chief (Fireman) Ed deal with Rogers the Dumpster Fire
If Jets wind up with a top 10 pick they should trade back into the 20s. Get some extra draft capital.
In the late 1st I’d target tackle help Savaiinaea
2nd I’d target Jalen Milroe as a dual threat QB or give Jordan Travis a shot if he’s healthy.
Either way they should really work on the oline issues, dline depth, and cb depth with the draft.
I’m 100% for the Jets doing the rebuild the right way, which means trading almost everyone for picks and moving back in the next draft. Aim for Arch or Iamaleava.
Man had his chance and choked several times!
“the 40-year-old has dealt with hamstring, knee, and ankle injuries this season, so an IR stint wouldn’t be completely unfounded”.
The Jets could just say Rodgers is on IR because he suffered a bruised ego.
New GM – Check
New Coach – Check
New QB – Check
New Owner – still waiting….
I feel sorry for the Jets fans. I mean my Vikings always let me down in the end , but holy crap what a flaming bag of dog crap that organization is!!!!!
What a cluster _ _ _ _ ….
Nope, Rodgers needs to play, thick or thin. He has enough talent around him to still win five or six games–heaven forbid a late season run–and have the team in better shape once the season ends. It would be too embarrasing to finish out on IR or cut, when he can still go out there and earn some of his money, while trying to win games for the fans.
At this point, draft positioning takes precedence.
I just checked the Jets’ remaining schedule. They’re home vs Seattle after this week’s bye and then head to Florida for 2 games vs the Dolphins & Jags.
So, I could see them giving Rodgers the start at home next week and then playing it by ear. Starting Tyrod Taylor does nothing for a team that’s going nowhere in December. Ideally, if Jordan Travis is healthy enough to play, he should be given a look for the last few games of the season. Then determine if he’s got enough potential to compete as next year’s starting QB.
They’re very likely losing the final 6 games
That’s a given. But if they were worried about saving some face in front of the home fans, that’s why I think Rodgers gets one last game there.
That ship has long since sailed
You have good jokes. “Win 5 or 6 games.” That could happen in an alternate universe. Lol
“Hold my wine cooler,” said Colin Kaepernick.
Seems like no one understands the jets business model. They sell hope. Every few years they hit the reset button and bring in some former stars, a new coach, gm, and qb and tell the fan base that “these jets are different” it’s messed up but it works for them. I don’t know if Johnson really cares about winning he cares about the money he brings in ( they just raised season tix again and asked their fans for down payments for 2025 around week 4).
TBH I didn’t think it had gotten to this point with Woody and Rodgers.
Most people here also thought that Rodgers was using his connection with Johnson to orchestrate the Jets firing Saleh and Douglas, so I don’t think that you’re in the minority.
Losing changes lots of things!
Very true.
Danny Dimebag will be available soon!
The real loser is Davante Adams
He’ll jump on the IR I heard he’s gonna beg the Packers to take him back next year
Remember when Jets fans and most of the media felt trading for Rodgers was a, great idea? Hahahahahahaha.
Adams will jump on the IR or create havoc in the locker room. .
DA is a trade-able piece in the offseason.
Problem is: they are not getting close to what they gave up to get him. It’s gonna be like a 5 and a7 or something.
But that 5th is more valuable to the rebuild than an aging WR.
For Rodgers & Adams to be “friends,” I don’t want friendships like theirs. Lmao
Send em to a dark cave w/big fat bag of psychedelics, adios.
