There appeared to be significant movement on the trade front for Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams earlier this week. Trade news was expected as the current teams of both of Adams’ former quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers‘ Jets and Derek Carr‘s Saints) were trending in the right direction to land the services of the star receiver.
That momentum came to a halt with the firing of Jets head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday, and now, the Raiders are having trouble finding anyone to reach their asking price.
After making the determination that they would attempt to seek a trade partner for Adams, Las Vegas set its asking price at a second-round draft pick. Initially, the Raiders also realized that Adams’ current contract would serve as an impediment to making a deal happen, so they were reportedly open to covering part of it, but more recently, they have been adamant about not paying a significant portion of the contract. According to veteran NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, who appeared on the VSiN Morning Line this morning, no team has come remotely close to covering either of those demands from the Raiders.
While the firing of Saleh in New York and the strict demands from Las Vegas have placed some severe speed bumps on the road to a trade, the general consensus is that it’s still more likely to happen than not. In a Q&A hosted this afternoon, the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vincent Bonsignore spoke on the likelihood of Adams and the Raiders mending their relationship. While he pointed out that one “can never say never in these situations,” and he laid out some pathways that would lead to Adams ultimately staying put, Bonsignore’s overall opinion was that it would “be a surprise if Adams is not traded.”
In regard to Adams’ playing availability, the veteran has missed the past two weeks while reportedly nursing a hamstring injury. While there was initially hope that he would be ready to return this week, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that Adams has officially been ruled out for the team’s Week 6 matchup with the Steelers.
Hope the Dodgers find the right price lol
I truly could see them rigging a way to pay him that money just to pinch run.
He has Cap Hits of $44 million in 2025 and 2026. The team that trades for him is going to cut him after 2024 or renegotiate a new contract that gets him Guaranteed Money in 2025/2026 so he’s not cut after 2024.
Who’s trading a 2nd round pick for that? Jets and Saints make the most sense if Raiders take a 3rd and take on most of his 2024. The Saints especially make sense because of Derek Carr being a long term match at QB and Mickey Loomis willing to push money into the future.
I think the Dodgers could fit him in. They spend a ton of money so the contract means nothing to them. He might be great in the OF. He has experience tracking balls. It sure what the compensation would come from.
Just to clarify: it’s been mentioned by multiple cap experts that the cap hit is actually $36.5M, not $44M.
Okay, I was looking at spotrac.com
For sure. I thought the same thing. I’m not sure what is causing the confusion about his cap number.
Sam The Football Fan is correct with his numbers.
According to both spotrac and overthecap….
For 2025 and 2026 Adams contract is $44,100,000 or 14.7% and $45,100,000 or 15.6% of the salary cap. If The Raiders trade or release Adams, the pre June 1st salary cap hit is $15,700,000 and $7,850,000 respectfully.
The confusion comes from this years cap hit. Every game that passes the cap hit drops, since Adams has been paid. His cap number would drop by $968K each week.
Saints makes sense but could easily become raiders 2022 part 2 as in Carr underperforms again and saints get rid of him. Carr’s upfront guarantee contract is more team friendly than people think and any team like Panthers or Seahawks could be looking for a bridge/vet backup in 2025 and Addams is there again with a younger QB he has to build rapport with
Totally agree, I’m just saying it makes sense. Not that I think it will or won’t work out. I don’t think any other team than the Saints/Jets will get him during the season, after the season it’s wide open again.
Idk I think Steelers makes sense too. Pickens is there best WR and he barely gets 5 targets a game. They could use a true number 1 wipeout to pair with fields
Dodgers?
They really do trade for just about everybody!
Says the teams that bid on him and couldn’t get it done. The Dodgers have a lot of home grown talent and reclamation projects that were revitalized by an organization with a superior approach to fielding a winning baseball team. Instead of riding the Dodgers jock strap you should demand that your team does better.
“Demand that your team does better” because that’s a logical plan that would have zero bearing on anything. Do you really believe if someone demands their team do better they are going to be like “ok we will actually try now” did you really not realize how ridiculous you sound when you typed that out? Absolutely hilarious.
Salty indeed
I distinctly remember Dodger fans being part of “The Evil Empire” choir when the Yankees rolled over MLB … ignoring the FIVE not four homegrown players at the core of those teams (Rivera, Jeter, Pettite, Williams, & Posada)
Did George spend on FA? Absolutely
Did they lead to rings? More often than not
… but that negates the whole “do better” retort AND most directly led to teams like KC & HOU later winning rings because of “Luxury Tax” (aka: spending other teams’ money)
Just do what we Yankee fans did back then:
ignore/laugh at the haters and enjoy the results of your team’s doing whatever it takes to put the best 9 players possible on the field
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Exactly.
Buy your trophy and pretend you won it.
MLB is trash.
Maybe Ely had game 5 on while writing this article.
I guess as long as he defers a chunk of his salary the Dodgers will be happy to acquire his services.
Ohtani deferred his salary or at least 98% of it, not to benefit the Dodgers, but himself. In California you pay taxes on what you earn each year,so by deferring 58 or 68 million he only pays 54% taxes on 2 million. When he moves on from the Dodgers and California he can establish a residence in Florida (no state tax) and get the rest of the money with no state taxes. Totally ridiculous to me, and probably the reason California is so popular with athletes and celebrities, and so far in debt.
Someone was watching the NLDS while writing their article.
Cap hits of $44m & $45m over the next 2 years?!?!?!? BAAAHHHAAA. Seriously tho, never change Raiders. You make the Brown family seem down right competent.
Mark my words: the Dodgers will never trade Davante Adams.
Mets-Dodgers. Thought we might have seen the last of Dave Roberts last night. But he survived at least another week. Stay tuned. If he loses with that payroll he’s surely history.
Because that’s what every team needs right? A ridiculously expensive WR with a big mouth who complains about everything and is a leader of no one. That’s worth a 2nd round pick right? You can trade him to the Chiefs and he’d complain Kelce was getting all the targets and I’m not getting my fair share. God forbid you trade him to the Patriots where a ball might fly his way once every 2 weeks. You might drown from the tears.
The Dodgers could use this kind of depth
Big shocker.. not many teams are willing to take on that much money especially for an aging injury prone player. You can find the same kind of production from a 4th or 5th round pick for a fraction of the cost. The Saints in my opinion is the team that will eventually get him.
You probably won’t find that production from that level pick, let’s be honest. However, the combination of high salary and high pick for what is, in all likelihood, two or so years of high level play is quite a bit much for a veteran player. Anyone who would be interested probably has a high payroll already as a winning or contending team, and nobody right now is going to pay a good pick for the privilege of capsizing their salary situation and ending up like the Rams.
Second round or first round pick, if you’re lucky to be be honest.
It really makes no sense for teams to make their trade demands public. Too often we see a GM scrambling to save face because everyone rejected his asking price. It’s not a good look for a GM if he can’t accurately gauge player values because then his salary cap management comes into question.
I have a Porsche with 250k miles on it.
Im asking slightly used prices.
You should be able to get a few more rides out if it.
I can’t figure why nobody is buying it though.
Also its in the shop right now and upkeep costs are high.
Anyone interested?
Only if you have a lien that I give you my savings to acquire.
Can I get a discount if I have Rashee Rice road test it?
LMAO
The GB front office looks brighter by the day. They had two aging HoF malcontents but weren’t winning in the playoffs (for various reasons). So they traded them for a bunch of picks and freed up their cap. Now they are right back in the thick of the NFC North race; while the Jets and Raiders are south of .500.
The packers are Cheeseheads and a**holes and I hate them with a passion. But one thing I’ve never been able to accuse them of is being stupid. Criminals and cheap shot artists yeah. Not dumb.
32 in December. Ouch. Can’t see him going anywhere at that price tag.
They are not getting a 2
It’s almost comical watching incompetent Mark Davis demand a 2nd rd pick and then not get it.
