Last we heard, the Raiders were in no hurry to announce who would enter the 2024 NFL season as their starting quarterback. That was two weeks ago, and now, that tune has changed. Head coach Antonio Pierce has stated that the team’s “goal is to announce a starter following the team’s next exhibition game,” per ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez.
So, what changed to prompt Pierce to decide that it’s time? “We’ve got to get ready to play football, and I think we’ve got enough film,” Pierce told the media following the team’s first preseason contest. “We’ll have two games here (by that point) to evaluate both quarterbacks to see how they’ll play.”
It’s currently a two-man race between veteran Gardner Minshew and second-year passer Aidan O’Connell. O’Connell started 10 games (including the last nine games of the season) for Las Vegas last year as a fourth-round rookie out of Purdue. Taking over for a benched Jimmy Garoppolo, he went 5-5 in those starts, completing 62.1 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions.
Minshew’s career as a starter has been a rollercoaster. Drafted out of Washington State as a backup for Nick Foles in Jacksonville, Minshew was immediately pushed into action when Foles suffered an injury that would keep him out for most of the season. Minshew became an overnight sensation that season, going 6-6 in 12 starts and throwing 21 touchdowns to only six interceptions. He entered the following season as the starter, but injuries and a 1-7 record pushed him out of the role.
Minshew was traded to the Eagles, where he started four games over the next two years as a backup to Jalen Hurts. His rookie contract expired, Minshew signed with the Colts, hoping to win an open starting job post-Matt Ryan. Indianapolis ended up drafting Anthony Richardson fourth overall in the first round, but Richardson got hurt, eventually missing the final 12 games of the season. Minshew took over as the Colts’ starter, and returned to his usual self, excelling as a surprise starter. In 13 starts, Minshew went 7-6 last year.
O’Connell started the Raiders’ first preseason game, playing one quarter of football. He went seven of nine for 76 yards as he led the team on an 83-yard field goal drive to open the scoring for Las Vegas. Minshew took over in the second quarter, playing four series. He completed six of 12 pass attempts for 117 yards and a touchdown.
The Raiders were viewed as a team that could have drafted a quarterback in the first round back in April, one that could have competed with these two unlikely starting candidates, but they instead opted to select the draft’s top tight end prospect in Georgia’s Brock Bowers. In a recent interview on Scoop City, Raiders general manager Tom Telesco detailed that the team didn’t “pass” on a quarterback, he just believes the draft didn’t shake out in a way that allowed them to take a passer. There were six quarterbacks taken before their selection, and the next passer wasn’t selected until the fifth round. If something fell to them, the Raiders might have had another competitor for this job. As it played out, though, they instead got a new weapon for the competitors they have now.
Those competitors will now have a week to prove their mettle. A week of practices and a preseason game against the Cowboys is all they have now to prove they deserve the starting job. We’ll keep a close eye on any developments in the coming week.
Noice
O’Connell gets my vote
O’Connell gets mine too. Hope for Stroud like lightening in a bottle. Gardener will never win a Super Bowl or compete with the likes of Mahomes , Burrow , Jackson or Allen
All the QBs you mentioned are mobile. A QB in the today’s NFL needs to be mobile. Aidan isn’t mobile. Gardner is. I think the Raiders will win more games with Gardner but Aidan will win the job.
Side note- Aidan couldn’t compete with Mahomes on Christmas day. He didn’t complete a pass after the 1st quarter. The defense and zeus won that game. It was an awful performance by Aidan. Just as bad as the Minn. game.
Oh forgot to mention that Gardner beat Jackson and the Ravens last year. He also beat Aidan and the Raiders.
Last year the following QBs were in the playoffs/wildcard: Flacco, Minshew, Goff, Mayfield, Purdy, Stafford, and Rudolph. Not “mobile” QBs. Love and Stroud weren’t running threats either. They’re toss ups.
Love, Stroud, Mayfield, and Perdy are pretty mobile. I think some of you assume we’re talking about a running QB when we say mobile. Most NFL starters are mobile in 2024. On the other hand, Goff literally plays behind the best offensive line in football.
A lot of people get mobile and running QBs confused for some reason. Runners in the NFL are Lamar, Jalen and Kyler. I may put Josh Allen in there as he’s a good runner too. Maybe I’m missing another. Pretty much the other 98% are mobile.
Not a fan of the words mobile or runner. The days of the statue, pure pocket QBs like Drew Bledsoe are long over. Stafford and Flacco are the last of that breed. QBs need to be athletic, avoid sacks, and extend plays. Not many running QBs like Lamar or Patrick run as much as they used to, only when they have to. Josh Allen runs too much, and risks a major injury every big hit he takes. Mobile isn’t special, it’s the new normal. QBs who are runners, don’t last very long.
Good response. Guys like Mahomes usually only run to the 1st down marker, and to guy another second or two in the pocket. If AOC could do that, even just occasionally, he’d have a shot, imvho.
Neither will O’Connell, and before you bring up the win over KC, he didn’t complete a pass after the first quarter in that game. Both of these guys will play this year. Their long-term answer isn’t on this roster.
Lmao Aoc will never be Stroud what are you talking about
They were suppose to rotate series in this game apparently. Yet they gave Gardner the series after his TD. Seems likely he will start.
Actually they were supposed to, and did, play one quarter each. Not really anyone’s fault that the Raiders only had 1 first quarter possession.
Couldn’t help it but the image that immediately popped into my mind was that of Judge Smails from Caddyshack. Wellllll, We’re waiting!
This isn’t really changing the tune. I don’t think they ever planned on waiting until opening day to make the decision.
Past that, I’d go with AOC, for a couple of reasons.. It just feels like we need to give him a shot to either succeed or fail. He played well enough in the final 9 games to warrant that. In sample sizes too small to matter, he played about even with Richardson, better than Levis & Young. He’s a bit of a statue, but without the deer-in-the-headlight look that he had earlier in the season.
Secondly, it feels like an easier conversion to Minshew if things go awry.
You took my post so I’ll spare everyone my own 2 paragraphs
My wonderances are now do we lean into our strengths as a passing team (I think we should lean in hard) or do we go with this okie doke bs mantra of we want to be a defensive team that runs the ball….. Sounds good.on paper …except the O-line is awful and Zamir Imo isnt anything special (or capable of being a 3 down 300 touch guy)
Pierce seems to want to be a running guy, if we had the personnel I wouldn’t complain but we don’t…………….Tee it high and let it fly Imo , let Adams Meyers and Bowers do their thang and live with the results whatever they may be, Im weary AP sees it this way today tho
Is there a 3rd road? I wanted the Raiders to draft Hurts. I often refer to him as a possession QB, but not a good QB. AOC obviously cannot run like Hurts, but he has a lot of weapons at his disposal. White is meh, but might not be bad. And I think we have plenty of WRs and two good TEs. Adams and Tucker are good enough deep threats, and Mayer, Meyers, and Brouwer can work well underneath.
In BB parlance, we’ll be playing small ball.
Yea I think we are better positioned to take a higher variance approach and air it out, tho I dont think Pierce feels the same {yet}
. If it fails at least we will know the Qbs aren’t capable….I don’t see why we pay Adams and take a 1st and 2nd rd Te’s if not going this route; not to mention Meyers is one of the most underrated players in football . Like the Gallup retirement as well freeing up Tre on the outside
I don’t think we have the team for small ball
Raiders QB Strategy:
“A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you’re talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who’s gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all friggn night”.
“I’m an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook’
Im hoping that isnt AOC
Different movie, but still both classics. I’m hoping on defense: “All their courage and strength was drained right from their bodies.”
Fudge was 50/50 his might have been Casino, but that ender from GoodFellas was my first thought
GoodFellas was overall a better movie, but the line about digging holes was hilarious.
O’Connell better have his head on a swivel. Wherever Minshew goes, the QB1 always gets hurt. Coincidence? I think not….
