The Patriots continue to consider their options with the third-overall pick, including a scenario where they trade out of the selection. Of course, that would require a suitor to pony up the necessary assets, and the Patriots have yet to find a worthy trade partner.

According to Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian of MassLive.com, the Patriots have yet to receive a “serious” offer for the No. 3 pick. While phone lines are open in New England, a source described the offers as “laughable” and “not close” to moving the needle. Another source was skeptical that the team’s desired haul will be proposed between now and the draft.
Albert Breer of SI.com says the Patriots will continue to listen to offers up until they’re officially on the clock. This would seem to indicate that the organization is more than receptive to making a trade, which is somewhat contrary to what we heard this past weekend. It’s worth noting that the Patriots and de facto GM Eliot Wolf are pursuing an “unprecedented package” (per Daniels), so while the team may be considering a trade, it’s uncertain if another organization would be willing to give up the required assets.
There was recent speculation that the Vikings coveted North Carolina QB Drake Maye, making them a natural trade partner with the Patriots. Other quarterback-needy squads like the Giants and Broncos have also been connected to Maye. Once these suitors get clarity with the top-two picks, the Patriots may be able to squeeze a worthy trade package from one of these squads.
The Patriots have made it clear that they’re seeking a rookie quarterback, so there’s a perfectly reasonable scenario where the organization selects one of the draft’s upper-echelon players at the position. With Caleb Williams expected to go first and Jayden Daniels trending towards the second-overall pick, there have been rumblings that both Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy have fans in New England.
Maye has generally been ranked higher than McCarthy throughout the pre-draft process, although Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports is unconvinced that the Patriots are interested in the North Carolina prospect. As Jones notes, most pundits have “assumed” Maye would be New England’s pick, but he hasn’t heard anyone “who believes strongly” that Maye will go to the Patriots. If the Patriots aren’t sold on Maye, that would only lend credence to a potential trade. In almost 48 hours, we’ll have our answer.
I really wish Belichick was making the pick. It’d likely be a long snapper or something random.
Described as laughable by a bad GM who wants way too much. Hopefully stuck with pick and wastes on a bad QB
How do we know he’s a bad GM?
It’s within 72 hours of the first round…. These rumors are probably a Tom Sawyer fence “Whitewashing” type message.
Also, the source is also not listed as the bad GM…. a source described the offers as “laughable” and “not close” — Probably the office IT guy asked to drop a quote on his to get someone printer paper or germ wipes.
Eliot Wolf is not the GM.
4 1sts is the starting point so it’s pretty clear that the plan is to keep the pick unless someone overpays.
Would you trade the following 1st round picks for the 2024 #3 pick?
Jahmyr Gibbs 23 1st
Zion Johnson 22 1st
Penei Sewell 21 1st
Jeff Okudah 20 1st
No I would not, I’d rather them take Maye over a lot of trade possibilities. I think he can be a stud QB
I’d say there’s a 70% chance Maye is a total bust. He very well could be Zach Wilson/Trey Lance/Mac Jones/Justin Fields 2.0.
Why are they even considering moving back in the draft? How often do you get a chance to pick a top three QB prospect when you have no QB of value on the roster? Are they pinning their hopes on another miracle pick like Brady
I view this a little different than most. I don’t think the #3 pick should be a gamble on the 3rd best qb. To me you want a guaranteed hit this high in the draft. I’d rather draft multiple later rd qbs and try to hit on them. I would draft mhj, Joe alt or Malik nabers
They have so many holes on the roster that trading down is the smartest move. Nothing says you can’t trade back up to the top 7-8 picks. This is going back a ways for an example but this team is so weak bringing in a rookie QB could very easily become another David Carr situation where he’s running for his life taking a million sacks and has absolutely no value after 2-3 years. They can’t protect a rookie QB for two seconds and have no one that can get open within 10 seconds so it’s a recipe for disaster. If they look at this as a two year rebuild instead, trade down, add extra picks, take MHJ/Nabers/Odunze, use there 2nd on a OT or another receiver and let them spend a year adjusting to the NFL, a rookie QB next year is coming into a much better situation
You’d have to think a trade with Minnesota/Denver would have to look similar to the Trey Lance trade. So for example maybe Minnesota is willing to trade 11+23 and a 1st and 3rd next year. Maybe they package 11 + next year’s second to move up a couple of spots to get their hands on Alt. Then use 23 + 34 on WRs. Or Maybe they get Odunze and use 23 + 34 on a LT and second WR. They now go into next year’s draft with 2 1sts and an extra 3rd to package together to move into a position to get their QB of choice.
