The Eagles are set to play the Buccaneers on Monday night in their bid to return to the Super Bowl. Given last year’s success, head coach Nick Sirianni entered the campaign on firm footing, but his stock appears to have taken a hit in 2023.
Philadelphia enjoyed a successful run to begin the season, posting a 10-1 record. Things have not gone according to plan since then, however, and last year’s NFC champions lost five of their final six games to close out the regular season. A major change to the team’s defensive staff has already been made – with Matt Patricia taking over play-calling duties from Sean Desai – but more could be on the horizon.
Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports the outcome of the upcoming wild-card round could be critical to the members of Philadelphia’s staff. The Eagles are already contemplating changes mainly the defensive side of the ball, Anderson notes, something which comes as little surprise given the continued struggles since Patricia took on a larger workload. Few staffers would likely be considered locks to return in 2024 if Philadelphia lost to a Tamp Bay team which went 9-8 to win the lowly NFC South.
Indeed, the Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora notes that “plenty” of people around the NFL believe Sirianni’s job could be on the line if the Eagles were to go one-and-done in the postseason after a disappointing run in December. The Eagles’ defensive shortcomings were masked in part by top-10 showings in a number of offensive categories, but quarterback Jalen Hurts regressed statistically compared to last season. Pressure on the players and coaching staff could thus be elevated to a higher point than their collective success in 2022 suggested would otherwise be the case.
Both offensive coordinator Shane Steichen (Colts) and DC Jonathan Gannon (Cardinals) departed the Eagles for head coaching gigs last offseason. Current OC Brian Johnson has also received interest for this year’s hiring cycle, so his post could need filling in the near future. Especially in the wake of postseason failure, though, the possibility of more drastic moves could be a storyline to follow.
As both Anderson and La Canfora note, the Cowboys and Mike McCarthy could find themselves in a similar situation should they fall short of playoff expectations. The latter is believed to be safe for 2024 as things currently stand, but the door could be open to a quick change in job security. In the case of the Eagles, that appears to also hold true to a large extent.
“Plenty of people believe”. What the hell does that mean? How do you define “plenty”. These reporters with nothing to do really live to try to create controversy when none exist.
It means that given expectations after last year
Watching the defense struggle despite multiple investments via free agency and draft picks
Watching Jalen Hurts regress
Watching Philly stumble into the playoffs
And if they lose in the 1st round to a 9-8 team after watching the freaking Dallas Cowboys beat them for the division and steal home field from Philly making them the away team.
“Plenty of people around the NFL” believe changes could be coming especially at head coach.
It’s no controversy. It’s reality given what we’ve seen. You don’t even need to be in the NFL business to come to that same conclusion.
Changes will be coming to Philly for next year. Question is how big of changes will they be making.
No it means he has no real info but found two who would speculate so he could meet his source requirements.
Eagles started 10-1. Finished 1-5.
Baker mayfield and Tampa beats them. Changes will happen to the coaching staff.
That’s not creating controversy or making things up. They already replaced Desai with Patricia during the season and you think more changes won’t happen if they’re one and done?
How do you know he has no real info? People parrot this line all the time in situations where reporters end up being right.
A reporter asks a Canadian politician “people are saying, xyz” The politician asks “what people? Surely you can name at least one person?”…. Reporter couldn’t name one person, I don’t remember the guys name but he wrecked the reporter and it was hilarious lol
That’s usually how insider sources work
Typically you can tell the validity of the sources info based on two things
1. It happening
2. It’s common knowledge already
Idk about NFL but NBA you can get in trouble for publicly discussing other teams players employees etc. So a lot of insider information remains anonymous cause the NBA would consider it tampering for rival executives to openly be discussing other teams players such as Durants frustration with Beal missing games and the suns performance.
Philly being a hot mess and defense collapsing we already knew changes were gonna happen. That was a given even for fans like us. They stripped Desai of his DC job
These reporters need something to write about. So they fabricate stories. A coach goes to the SB last year then finishes 11-6 this year and his job is in the line if he loses? lol. SMH worst thing about the NFL is the reporters and media
Marty Schottenheimer lost his job after a 14-2 season and the pats knocked em out 1st round.
Yeah Eagles lose to an inferior team in Tampa his seat might be hot.
Have you watched them the last 6 games ? This team has fallen off a cliff. They may be worse than the Panthers right now.
The Eagles have jist forgotten as to how play football
I have no idea ad to what the issue is
Quite frankly they were almost unwatchable the last six weeks
Hurts has been exposed for what he is. Stop the run and the screens and you beat them.
This has been more on the defense which can’t stop a nosebleed. Hurts has been playing hurt and the play calling has been super-predictable.
You can defend him if you want, but watch how often his WRs need to make incredible catches on his throws.
That’s when he actually gets off a throw, instead of holding the ball forever, getting chased and throwing it up the sideline. Guy needs to get it and throw it
The thing is his NCAA career was hilariously overlooked (to an extent still is) and now his NFL career is being defined by inane play calling of a conservative Offense playbook.
That’s on the OC
Instead of “Hurts Exposed” it’s “Gannon Missed”
Hurts is injured and trying to play through it. The defense was already thin from all of the off-season losses, and they hit a wall. He should have rested his players after the first Cowboy game. If your backups couldn’t beat the Giants and Cardinals, you have bigger problems. Then, they went out and lost two of those games anyway and got more people hurt. So instead of giving his team a reset and taking a fresh team into the playoffs, they’re now limping in and a mess.
Correction, after the second Cowboy game.
Sirianni has lost the team, if they lose to TB that dude is done in Philly.
They really just need to fire Matty P, it’s not hard to see how bad his impact is looking at Lions previously and now how bad his defense is with the Eagles
They were bad before Matty P.
That niners drubbing really did a number on them
If they dump Sirianni, Belichick will swoop right in. He wants a contender, not a rebuild, so he can get Shula’s record.
I’d prefer Vrabel. It seems Belachick has lost his edge.
Bill is still an incredible coach. Terrible GM, but he had a terrible team playing hard right until the end.
That “incredible coach” is a loser without Brady — and Matt Patricia is a Belichick crony.
Belichick’s defense ranked seventh in yards allowed per game this year with 303. They’re top ten in every major passing defense category-yards allowed, yards per attempt, touchdowns allowed, etc. As for rushing defense, they’re even better, ranking inside the top five in some major categories (like yards allowed).
And, to top it off, they did this while missing their four top corners at various times in the season (Gonzalez, both Jones, Bryant, and Davis all were injured at various times, sometimes all at once) and their best defender in Matt Judon for the year. J.C. Jackson didn’t even get there until being released by the Chargers. The Patriots don’t have any stars, and they played like an elite defense all year. So, no, I would not at all that Belichick has lost his coaching ability.
So are you saying some team should hire him as DC?
That might be what you’re saying. I’m saying that he can coach. I don’t like him, but he can coach. It’s fairly obvious what I was saying, I believe.
@smd, BB wouldn’t join any nfc east team out of respect for the Giants.
I think it’s a joke the Eagles are favored. If I was a betting man ;). This will be another disaster weekend for the Eagles. Despite his record Sirianni and the Eagles have fallen off a cliff and I don’t see it turning around. There are some great options for better choices that can take this talented roster to the Super Bowl.
If I was a betting man…I wouldn’t touch this game with a ten foot pole, either team. When you bet on bad teams…bad things happen.
I think the point spread has something to do with the fact that with everything on the line last week Tampa had trouble beating the worst team in the league. Given that both QBs are nursing injuries I wouldn’t bet a nickel on this game.
No doubt there will be some changes, doesn’t change the fact that Josina is a joke of a reporter.
It means the 49ers hurt there feeling and demoralized them fake imposter eagles kinda like the jags when we destroyed there dreams you play us you get curb stomped and feelings hurt for the rest of the year! Go NINERS BABY
hammer_time24
Kinda like the Ravens did to the 49ers
The Eagles hurt your feelings for an entire offseason. Congrats on a regular season win!
How is Brian Johnson even being considered for an HC position? What a joke
50 years of dominating the Jets came to an end, so naturally the Eagles are reaching for the panic button.
Yeah, or maybe it was the historic collapse of a 10-1 team that has them reaching for the panic button.
The 2023 Eagles showed how important good coordinators are to a football team. Losing both to head coaching gigs in the off-season turned a likely Super Bowl contender into a one-and-done wild card team. If they were playing anyone other than Tampa they’d be on the golf course next weekend.
I think they still will
Never saw a guy go from firm footing to the hotseat during a season. It usually takes a couple of years. They had the best roster in the league last year, and he capitalized. Without that as things have eroded, he’s looking funny in the light. Gannon very well might have screwed him by not allowing him to keep Fangio.
