OCTOBER 27: After the Giants and Titans ruled out their respective starters, the Bears will do the same. The Bears will sit Fields for Week 8, which will mark his second absence due to the thumb issue. Sunday night’s game will feature Bagent against Justin Herbert.
OCTOBER 23: Justin Fields‘ thumb injury caused him to miss the Bears’ Week 7 win, but questions remained through the weekend regarding his status moving forward. For the time being, it does not appear as though he will be able to suit up for Chicago’s next game.
When speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed (via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times) that Fields’ status has not changed over the past few days. As a result, he is doubtful to play in Week 8 against the Chargers. That will leave Tyson Bagent in line to start another contest.
Fields is dealing with swelling in his right thumb, but surgery (and the IR stint which would likely come about as a result of it) is not on the table right now. That has left the 24-year-old with a week-to-week prognosis, with his ability to grip the ball being a major determinant in when he will next see the field. Of course, Eberflus’ doubts on that front emerging early in the week suggest Fields will remain sidelined for at least one more game.
Bagent overtook veteran Nathan Peterman on the depth chart in large part due to his strong performances in training camp and the preseason, and he made his first career start on Sunday against the Raiders. The undrafted rookie delivered an efficient, turnover-free outing and helped lead the team to a win. While Eberflus confirmed Bagent will handle starting duties while Fields is away, he has made it clear multiple times the latter will be QB1 upon return.
Nevertheless, all eyes will likely be on Bagent over the next several days as the Bears look for a third win in four games against an underwhelming Chargers team. Fields, meanwhile, will continue his rehab and any further updates on that front will be worth watching closely as the week progresses.
Bagent wins against the chargers he should get the nod as qb1. Trade Fields. Commanders might be inclined to deal Chase Young. They can figure out the structure of the rest of the deal.
Who wants Fields? I know some team would, but for what a 4th-5th round pick? Seems to be a backup QB more than a starter. A 4th got the deal done between Dallas and SF for Lance.
Brock Purdy and now Tyson Bagent have emerged from obscurity. One deemed Mr Irrelevant the other a UDFA. Makes me wonder how many others have slipped through the fingers of NFL teams who are enamored with big time programs and the supposedly can’t miss QB’s. One of the best QB’s of the 70’s, Ken Anderson, went to Augustana college, try finding that in your college directory.
It should also be noted that there was no interest in Warren Moon when he came out of college. It was only after he had gone to the CFL and shown he had real talent that NFL teams pursued him.
crossey could not possibly be the same guy who ragged the XFL…
couldn’t possibly be the same guy…
There’s a significant difference between the CFL and the XFL. The CFL isn’t a big money winner but they have stayed in existence since the mid 50s. They don’t compete with the NFL either, as the Canadian brand of football is unique in many respects (3 downs, larger size field etc). The XFL, USFL, and other wannabee leagues in the USA are just poorly disguised scams that keep trying to re-invent themselves, hoping to find more suckers.
USFL/XFL don’t compete with NFL either.
they compete with MLB in the spring.
I think you’re referencing 1985 USFL that tried to compete with NFL in the fall and 2011 XFL hardcore gimmick.
I’m strictly talking about 2019 renditions of USFL and XFL which are simply minor league football in the spring and have gotten over a hundred players in NFL camps
i think youre just finding copium trying to pedestal the CFL which isn’t even popular in Canada anymore, is gimmicky, on the verge of bankruptcy, and could fold in lieu of new USFL threat on the rise
USFL, now heading into year 3, could be on year 33 had it stuck to spring… FOX knows that this time around
so better get ready for this “free on FOX”/ “$10 game ticket” scam of the century, to be around for decades.
oh the poor poor fans who will have the OPTION to throw on a football game in April… FOR FREE!! what a complete scam!!!
great evaluation buddy
We could continue the discussion this time next year but I’m confident the XFL scam will be defunct by then…once FOX sees their ratings tank.
It’s in Illinois, good D3 basketball team this past decade. And Anderson even made it to the Super Bowl. He and Isaac Curtis on the deep ball were fun back in the mid to late 70s
He tore it up in D2 FCS. Currently has NCAA record for most career passing TD’s.
FCS is the old Division I-AA. Division 2 is the level below FCS.
Maybe I phrased that wrong, but they’re listed as
Shepherd Rams
7-1
36th in NCAA Division II

Happens a lot.

Kudos to Bagent, hope he continues to run with this opportunity.
If Bagent helps the Bears win the next game then for sure Fields should be traded.
The NFL is going to regret not flexing that Bears-Chargers game out of Sunday Night Football.
Honestly, I don’t think any matchup in that Sunday night slot would come close to being as depressing as the news we’re seeing over in Gaza.
Not sure if anyone else caught this, but the Bears brought in Peterman to throw a hail mary at the end of the 1st half. That’s because Bagent doesn’t have the arm strength, and when NFL defenses figure that out, they’ll take away his short passing game and challenege him to throw deeper. Bagent proved he can hang in the NFL Sunday, behind a strong running game. One game does not a season make.
Yes, because throwing the ball from your own 41 (QB on own ~35) to other end zone is a normal play that should be defended every play. SMH.
Huh?
One day….I’d like to see an organization have two QB’s that they substitute for each other based on down and play called.
