The quarterback position was an obvious talking point for the Ravens until their mega-contract for Lamar Jackson was worked out. Depth behind him could still be an area the team works to address, however.
Baltimore showed interest in Baker Mayfield and Jacoby Brissett before finalizing Jackson’s extension; the team also reportedly submitted an offer to the former before he chose to join the Buccaneers. That demonstrated their willingness to at least bring in competition for the second- and third-string QB roles, ones occupied during the 2022 season by Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown.
Huntley (a former UDFA, like Brown) received the low RFA tender this offseason, making him a low-cost option in the event Jackson were to miss time through injury for what would be a third straight campaign. Huntley, 25, has nine combined regular and postseason starts across his three years in Baltimore, but he has a 3-6 record and a negative touchdown-to-interception ratio (6:7) during that span.
Aiming to bring in a veteran, the Ravens reunited (once again) with journeyman Josh Johnson earlier this offseason. His signing will give the team four arms with NFL experience during training camp, but another could be on the way. Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic notes that the quarterback position is one the Ravens are likely still interested in addressing between now and camp (subscription required).
The free agent market features a few options for the team to consider. Carson Wentz and Teddy Bridgewater are still in search of a new home, and a backup role would await them with the Ravens or any other destination this late into the offseason. The same holds true for Nick Foles and Chase Daniel, each of whom would represent a more established insurance policy compared to the current incumbents filling out the depth chart. If Baltimore remains willing to add another veteran, finances likely would not be an issue, as the team has just under $10MM in cap space.
Joe Flacco is available…lol.
Rather have him than Wentz or Foles
Teddy easy
Agreed. If bringing in a vet bring one in where QB1’s ego is least effected. IMO, that’s Teddy. Team chemistry, baby!
Is it “effected” or “affected”?
Teddy is a safe option, but not a lot of big time plays. Foles can retire, he got his ring, he got paid, he can retire already. Chase Daniel has been a career backup, he brings a solid floor but not a high ceiling. He could step in and play some downs for the Ravens if both Lamar and Huntley go down.
I will say that Wentz has the highest ceiling of anyone currently available, the guy has a cannon for an arm, he just has some baggage and a bad public image to go along with it. Todd Monken is the new OC, he does like to stretch the field and take some deep shots. With Odell Beckham, Rashod Bateman and Zay Flowers I could see Wentz standing in the pocket and launching it to these receivers. Especially protected behind that Ravens offensive-line. Obviously Lamar is the QB1, but if he goes down and misses anymore time the Ravens need an option. Wentz is better than most of the backups in the league, not a bad option to have in case of an emergency.
I would take Joe Flacco over Wentz any day, but if I want a guy who would be better for the clubhouse in general, it’s Teddy all the way
McGough just won the USFL championship
Does he receive a ring or gift coupons to a local Burger King?
potentially an NFL contract
None of these options look very tasty or worth what they would cost. I wouldn’t say any of them make the Ravens stronger. Pass. If Jackson goes down for an extended stretch, the season is over in any case.
They came a fumble at the goal one away from beating Cincy in the playoffs without Lamar last season. Does that say anything about The Ravens or The Bengals? I do think Carson Wentz is an upgrade, can’t figure out his problem tho. He’s standing next to Cam Newton, two steps away from Colin Kapernaek right now.
Wentz still has NFL talent
So does Teddy with a better rep
Chase Daniel is a good mind
Foles could maybe still have something
Wentz let down the Redskins last year in a big way. Whatever magic Wentz had, it’s gone now.
I mean he has the talent of a top 45 quarterback. Full time starter days are gone
There’s a fair number of butts who can ride benches and play passably. Wentz has enough psychological and interpersonal baggage that he’d be on the short list of backup QB’s least desired in the league.
When Wentz might show MVP form as a starter, putting up with his awkward and difficult personality was a calculated risk. Now it’s just foolishness.
I agree honestly. I don’t want him in Denver honestly and he can’t be used as a bridge QB.
