Free agent left tackle Duane Brown was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at roughly 2pm on Saturday, per TMZ Sports. Police say that Brown tried to go through security screening with a gun in one of his bags, and he was booked on possession of a concealed firearm.
Brown, who will turn 37 in August, has long been one of the top left tackles in the game. Despite his strong 2021 performance, in which he enjoyed perfect attendance, earned the fifth Pro Bowl nod of his career, and rated as Pro Football Focus’ 37th-best OT out of 83 qualifiers, there has not been significant interest in his services this offseason.
The Seahawks had deployed Brown as Russell Wilson‘s blindside blocker since acquiring him in a trade with the Texans in October 2017, and Seattle was reportedly interested in a reunion earlier this year. However, that was when the ‘Hawks, who held the No. 9 overall pick in April’s draft, were not expected to have a chance to land a top collegiate tackle. Ultimately, the club selected Mississippi State LT Charles Cross with its first choice, and it appears that Cross will open his rookie season as the starter at left tackle.
Similarly, the Panthers were in pursuit of Brown back in March, but a deal never materialized. The door to a contract with Carolina may have closed when the Panthers drafted NC State tackle Ikem Ekwonu with the No. 6 overall pick, although the team is reportedly not committing to Ekwonu — who lined up at guard in high school and at times during his college career — as the Week 1 LT starter. Carolina could bring in Brown on a one-year pact while Ekwonu gets his professional sea legs on the interior of the line, but that is merely speculation at this point.
One way or another, it would be surprising if Brown were unable to land a starting gig at some point this summer. Quality left tackles are hard to come by, and Brown demonstrated in 2021 that he still has gas in the tank. While his arrest could theoretically complicate matters, it presently does not seem as if it will have a dramatic effect on his NFL future.
We will update this story as more news becomes available.
He was just testing to see if TSA could catch it.
How was he supposed to know that concealing a firearm as you pass through airport screening would be an issue?
Come on man.
He’s been watching the Supreme Court.
Or the loonies outside the homes of the justices and thought he needed protection as well.
I think Brown is planning on running for Congress. Over the last 20 – 30 years, there have been several US representatives that have tried the same exact maneuver. And one of the more recent cases, a Congressperson brought a loaded weapon to airport security.
Who goes he think he is …. Brittany Griner?
Something about shall not be infringed. Free Duane Brown! No justice no peace
In his 13 year career he has flown private with the NFL so often that he was probably upset that he had to go through a check point. I have no doubt that Mr. Brown has traveled with a weapon in his carry on with such frequency that it’s no different than us putting a cell phone in the pocket.
Just ask Barry Switzer.
It’s certainly possible that he just forgot he had one in his bag. That actually happened to a friend who had packed in a hurry and just forgot he had a gun in his bag. Either way, it’s very serious. It took months to resolve and he paid a huge fine- Not that paying a huge fine is something Brown would worry about…
How dumb or stoned do you have to be to try and get a gun on an airplane? At least the Bears guys were using their guns the way that you’re supposed to. Buying or protecting their drugs. Except Pringle who apparently must be a sovereign citizen and thinks the driving laws don’t apply to him. Or any other ones apparently.
I’m thinking an indefinite suspension. He actually committed a crime unlike some players
If you keep falling on it that sword will eventually do some major damage to vital organs. I know a lot of folks on this board, myself included, that would be very sad to see you go. So stay healthy and stop playin with sharp objects.
It’s not like he exposed himself to people in Walmart.
But that would be ok if the witnesses signed an NDA, and he played for your team.
According to another site the firearm was stolen. Also, considering his profession and the amount of travel he has done on planes, I’m sure he knows what can and can’t be brought on planes, and that firearms can be brought if disclosed ahead of time. But perhaps the fact it was stolen was the reason he didn’t disclose it. Either way, another incredibly stupid and avoidable decision by a professional football player.
Exactly. Why can’t he buy one legitimately? Ignorance is not an excuse to break the law. Indefinite suspension
Says the person who is the #1 cheerleader and fan club President for somebody sexually assaulting numerous people just trying to do their job and pay the bills. Ignorance of not knowing you can’t rub your junk in a persons face and ask them to digitally penetrate your anal cavity is no excuse of the law.
Guns get stolen and bounce around a lot. It could have changed hands enough that the guy he bought it from thought it was clean. It might have been a rare gun collectible or something else.
Bringing it on the plane was stupid. Kind of like this allegedly old man that will stick up for some perv because he might make their team better. Sell yourself out because you have a man crush on him. It is your right who you root for but you don’t need to continually bring it up. Not that there is anyone like that on here.
Just another spoiled rich athlete who can’t connect with the real world after being catered to his entire life.
