Given the current quarterback situation in Chicago, it seems inevitable Nick Foles will be on the move soon. It comes as no surprise, then, that NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the Bears “have explored trades” involving the veteran (Twitter link).
[RELATED: Bears To Sign Siemian]
Foles, 33, has been with the Bears for the past two years. He started seven games in 2020, posting a 2-5 record while throwing 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Last offseason, the team signed Andy Dalton and drafted Justin Fields, setting them up for the short- and long-term future. That left Foles on the sidelines for all but one game in 2021.
The former Super Bowl winner was thought to be a trade candidate even though Dalton only signed a one-year contract, and he will remain one with the addition of Trevor Siemian on a two-year pact. A deal has recently become more manageable, though, which could accelerate the process of Foles finding a new home.
As Garafolo notes, a $4MM roster bonus Foles was due last week has been paid out. That, coupled with the fact that only $1MM of his remaining compensation is guaranteed, would make it easy for a team to add him from a financial perspective. A trade would save the Bears $8MM in cap space, while creating a dead money charge of $2.67MM.
While most teams are settled with regards to their starting signal-caller, Foles could still be an effective backup on any number of teams. The question of where he lands next could soon be answered.
His “Philly special” statue is badass
Be a hell of lot better than Mannion in MN……
He would, but would the Bears trade Foles to a division rival?
Why would they be concerned with trading a backup QB within the division?
I don’t see the big deal. New offense, so he prolly won’t give secrets away. I’ll take what ever draft picks someone will give me plus the cap savings (which is the real key here).
You know you’ve discovered a desperate GM when you find him scrounging for offensive secrets in Chicago…lol.
The Bears should not care about trading a backup QB to a division rival at all. Why would they?
Not really since if either was thrown into action at this point it’s overwhelmingly likely to be a loss. It really comes down to who holds a a clipboard better and who QB1 prefers to have bring him coffee.
Pittsburgh. He’s cheaper and better than both Rudolph and Haskins. Good competition for Trubisky.
He’s not cheaper than Haskins, they just signed Rudolph to that deal, and they presumably aren’t looking to add another backup caliber QB with no future upside.
All of this, plus they’re likely to draft a QB this year.
Rudolph has 1 year left. Not multiple years. Foles would be $800k cheaper than Haskins. The Steelers are already connected to Baker Mayfield. What they don’t have is veteran experience.
They just signed a QB who’s been in the league for five years, most of them as a starter.
I’m not convinced Trubisky learned anything during his Bears tenure. He certainly regressed in just about every considerable way. So not sure he’s the veteran the Steelers need.
Oh, I’m not sure either, but they must think he’s there for something.
Seahawks!!
Texans!!
I agree on Houston as the best fit. But I think Baker ends up in Houston
He could have been included in the Watson deal if that were the case, but I don’t think he wanted it. He does have connections to the area since he grew up a couple hours away and his father played for the University of Houston.
Noo, the bears should keep him as their starter. They should also trade Khalil mack. Ask for a second rounder back and draft a LB in the fourth.
Uhhhh
Easy there Nostradamus.
Well, as a vikings fan.
Hey, as long is any team is willing to part with a draft pick I think the Bears will do it. I’m sure the Bears are looking for something like a 4th rd (which I think is what they traded to get him) so if they can get a 4,5,or 6 round pick they will bite.I’m a bit surprised that the Saints do not trade for him (as Winston seems to get hurt a lot), but trying to trade a backup QB right now will be tough when the draft is coming up and a lot of teams will be likely drafting their next QB or a backup (or both in one player).
They need to keep Foles, trade Fields away for a couple of first rounders if they are able to find a team dumber than the Bears to take the deal then we can draft some good positional players. Fields isn’t the future for the Bears so we may need to trade for a QB, rather than drafting one. Makes a lot of sense trading for a QB who has already proven that he can play the position, than drafting for a QB who is a huge question mark on Day One and Fields has already answered that question mark with a grade F.
Wow. Big L here.
