With a new head coach and, seemingly, a quarterback successor to Deshaun Watson in place, the Texans could be set up to begin moving forward in a new direction. Acquiring draft capital will be central to their offseason plans, which could include, as ESPN’s Sarah Barshop writes, trading out of the third-overall pick in this April’s draft.
At the start of the offseason, Barshop notes, Texans GM Nick Caserio “hinted” that the team could trade out of the No. 3 slot to add more picks. In a year without sure-fire prospects at the top of the board, not to mention the numerous holes on the roster of a team that has posted four wins in each of the last two seasons, a case could certainly be made in favor of moving down.
If things go according to plan, the Texans will have dealt Watson by the time the draft begins. New head coach Lovie Smith made it clear the team intends to move the 26-year-old before the start of the new league year. He has also publicly supported third-round rookie QB Davis Mills, who is likely to be the team’s starter heading into the 2022 campaign. The Watson situation is still centered around the civil suit against him, tough, delays in which could push any resolution deeper into the offseason.
Of course, any Watson trade would likely land the Texans significant draft capital. The same could hold true, as Barshop adds, if the team were to deal veterans such as left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wideout Brandin Cooks in the name of getting younger and less expensive as a team. If the organization wants to fully commit in that direction, one key element will be their decision with that top pick.
If there were QBs people thought were top five pick worthy, they’d have an easier time finding a worthwhile trade down, but if there were QBs people thought were top five pick worthy, they’d probably take one.
Anyone top five or ten who’s committed to a young QB would make sense to trade down, but not sure they can. Shades of 2019.
Crazy that the third best qb in the country (or second or first depending on who’s going 1 and 2) isn’t good enough to draft for a team w a new hc and Davis mills behind center. Must be a qb light draft
I mean, one or two of these QBs might turn out to be great, but they all come with more uncertainty/risk/questions than the top QBs normally do.
Hey, is that Herman Munster with a makeover?
Jimmy G and 2 second rounders?
No shot.
lmao
Haha. That’s laughable. Jimmy G going to Pittsburg, Tampa, Carolina, or Denver gets you a 2nd.
Mills would be 1st QB and a 1st rounder in this draft had he stayed at Stanford. Texans did well getting him in the 3rd.
QBs climb post combine. SF gave up 3 1s to get Lance. No one saw that coming last Feb.
Lance had better tape the year before combined with better measurables than I think any of these guys have had.
Trade the pick to the Ravens. They have the draft assets to make it worthwhile and Kyle Hamilton would be a very excellent addition to the Ravens secondary.
#14, a 3rd(one from Culley), 2 4ths (Judon+Ngakue comps), and whatever else is needed to round out the deal.
Could even make it into a bigger deal with Brandin Cooks involved.
That doesn’t seem like Baltimore. They tend to maximize draft pick volume.
If this truly is; “A year without sure-fire prospects at the top of the board”, they probably won’t be able to find a trade partner who wants to move up to the number three spot.
Yeah, unless either some QB has an extraordinary pre-draft prospect or if someone (Carolina?) is desperate for their choice of offensive tackle.
On draft day teams always tend to get the itch.
Unless this turns out to be like 2013. As a Jets fan, I sure hope not.
There isn’t a huge want for teams to get into the top 5 like in previous years but I think the top 5 has some people worth trading up for if you have a big enough need.
Evan Neal at OT is going to be great.
Hutchinson, Karlaftis and Thibodeuox will all be great edge rushers.
Then you’ve got QB needy teams that might want to move forward for the best QB available (probably Kenny Pickett)
Kyle Hamilton is a very good safety
Tyler Linderbaum will be one of the best guards in the league.
The value of those picks won’t be as good as in the past but I’m sure some teams will still be trying to move up. Texans should be putting more effort into moving Watson tho.
I think a good deal could be Kadarius Toney, the number 7 pick in the draft and a future third round pick for Watson.
Giants then have Watson Barkley Galloday Shepard Slayton and Rudolph on offence with Brain Daboll in charge hopefully they can do a lot better. In the situation Watson can not play you’ll still have Danny Dimes for the remainder of this season.
You lose a young receiver, a top pick in a weak draft and a future third for a QB that if he can play is easily top 10. It’s probably worth the risk if your the giants cause you suck and if this works out it’s brilliant and if it doesn’t oh well you still suck nothing changes.
Have to believe that they’ll get a LOT more than that for Watson. I mean, they could have had more than that at the trade deadline, no?
Idk a former first wr, a top 10 picks a a third for a qb that didn’t play at all last season and still no body’s when he will be allowed to play

Thanks.
So, it might or might not be. Very close either way.
Trying to figure out why people suddenly think Pickett can’t throw the ball when his hands are the same size as college when he could throw the ball.
Why on earth include this guys photo? Adds absolutely NOTHING to the article lol.
