Newly-hired Giants general manager Joe Schoen is wasting no time in beginning the team’s search for a new head coach. He has already completed an interview with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, and is expected to hold another one tomorrow with Buffalo’s defensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier.
According to a team announcement, the Daboll interview has already been completed, just hours after the hiring of Schoen was officially announced. The 46-year-old met via teleconference with Schoen and co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch. It should come as a surprise to no one that Daboll, the Bills’ OC for the past four seasons, is the candidate with whom the search process is beginning. It was immediately reported that he would be one of the key targets for the Giants once Schoen landed the GM job.
Meanwhile, Frazier’s name is being linked to the HC vacancy for the first time. As Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports (via Twitter), Frazier is expected to interview with the Giants on Saturday. Again, this is far from a surprise, given the Buffalo connection to Schoen. The 62-year-old has served in his current role for five years, overseeing the Bills’ defensive turnaround. He has already been interviewed by the Dolphins, and is also scheduled to meet with the Bears.
The other factor influencing the immediacy of these interviews, of course, is the fact that the Bills play on Sunday night. As Schwartz points out, any potential second interviews conducted prior to the Super Bowl could only take place if the first round was completed this weekend, something made easier by the fact that Schoen is still in Buffalo. The other two candidates linked to the Giants so far are ex-Dolphins HC Brian Flores and Cowboys DC Dan Quinn.
Daboll is gonna be hired. Wasn’t too big on him at first but I’m starting to see the potential. He’ll need a former HC as his DC to make me feel better. Hoping he lets Graham walk and looks at Fangio and Schwartz.
Think Fangio will join Harbough in Vegas if that goes ahead. And Schwartz will likely join Doug Pederson if he gets a HC. I believe he’s the early front runner for the Vikings.
If I’m the giants I’d take Brain Flores and then grab Pep Hamilton as the OC.
Apparently Flores and Giants owner John Mara have a positive relationship and strong mutual respect. Also apparently the Giants are interested in Deshaun Watson and Flores and Watson have some kind of connection and want to link up.
Giants offence with Watson Barkley Galloday Shepard Toney Slayton and Rudolph.
Defence isn’t terrible either and with Flores should improve.
O line needs a lot of work but can address that via the draft and FA. If Watson and Flores join forces on the Giants would cause a definite stir but could actually make the team relevant again. Going up against the Eagles and Washington they could potential steal a playoff spot
It would be really hard for the giants to acquire new talent if they trade for watson. They are currently 6 million over the cap, so acquiring watsons $40 million/year contract will mean cutting several high salary players. Additionally, the draft capital he will cost will limit the amount of opportunities to improve through the draft. I’m not saying the trade wont happen, just that it will be extremely difficult to field a complete team around him due to the costs of the trade
Hard…it would be impossible to acquire any new talent if they tried for Watson…..no way this happens….too high a cost for a team with very little talent and too high a moral cost bringing in a QB with tremendous human baggage….this guy makes Rothlessberger look like a saint!
Watson, with his off/field issues, would be impossible to sell to New York fans.
And for a franchise with a huge talent deficiency, why would the NYG give up even half the Texans asking price for Watson, say a 1st and 2nd round selection and a young veteran player with upside? That’s madness.
Impossible to sell to New York fans? They seemed to tolerate Lawrence Taylor just fine.
Not the NY fans….they want a winner….it would be the NY press….they wouldn’t leave the guy alone and probably for good reason.
Totally different era….Taylor today would get cut to pieces by the press.
At the time, LT had addiction issues, which weren’t widely known, and would be viewed with a degree of empathy today. His criminal problems came later and are not exactly tolerated.
Little different. Taylor was already a giant . Its slightly different when you bring in a troubled talent.
Also I may be wrong but I don’t think Taylor was ever accused of sexual assault . Pretty sure it was just drugs
Do the Giants know what they are doing?
Also, why does the NFL have the policy of allowing coaches to interview while their team is actively in the playoffs?
That is St-OOO-pid!
