In the wake of Jon Gruden‘s resignation as the Raiders’ head coach, more items related to his departure continue to trickle out. With respect to Gruden’s contract, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes that the ex-HC’s 10-year, $100MM accord might have been backloaded, which means he could have left even more money on the table than initially believed (he was in the fourth year of that 10-year pact). Florio says it’s likely that Gruden and the team agreed upon some sort of severance package, but a fight over Gruden’s considerable unpaid salary could be in the offing if there was no such agreement.
For instance, if Gruden’s resignation was not a voluntary one, he could theoretically file a grievance and argue that he was constructively discharged without cause. If his grievance were successful — a dubious proposition, given that it would probably be heard by commissioner Roger Goodell — he would be entitled to all remaining guaranteed money on his contract. Of course, it has previously been reported that not all $100MM was guaranteed, and between that and the optics and likely outcome of a grievance, it would seem that Florio is correct in his assumption that the contractual matter has already been resolved. But because Raiders owner Mark Davis is believed to be perhaps the most cash-poor owner in the game — though the club’s move to Las Vegas is expected to be a boon for Davis in that regard — the details of a resolution or lack thereof are worth considering.
Meanwhile, Adam H. Beasley of Pro Football Network confirms (via Twitter) that OC Greg Olson will become the team’s offensive play-caller moving forward, and Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets that Gruden’s son, Deuce Gruden, will remain Las Vegas’ assistant strength and conditioning coach. We had already learned that special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia will take over the head coaching role on an interim basis.
It appears that, shortly before his resignation, Jon Gruden told his team that he had made a number of disturbing statements. One Raiders player, speaking anonymously, said, “when we met [on Monday] we were moving on to the next game-Denver. This news now is just shocking. At the same time, he told us he said a lot. On one hand I knew it was some foul stuff, on the other hand, we know the man we work with every day” (via veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson on Twitter).
At this point, it’s difficult to imagine Gruden obtaining another NFL-related position down the road, but if there are enough people who feel like the anonymous Raider, it may be a possibility.
Wonder what would happen if they went through every players email over the past decade…..how many players would we still have left if they were held to the same standard?
Exactly!!
Everyone is doing it is an indefensible position. No one is pure as driven snow, but if you think/speak such egregious, offensive comments. Any walk of life should be held accountable.
I am comfortable saying that I fall short of sainthood, but never thought nor expressed ( in any format) comments like that. I am a Raider guy and I am appalled
Honestly so true. Pretty sure nobody would be safe if that were the case. Fame comes with so many unanticipated risks theses days
I guess we know what your emails say
Same thing as your emails, tweets, text messages. People in glass houses shouldnt throw stones banana.
ha, forget about emails. Desean Jackson shared quotes he thought were from Hitler and disparaged Jews. Tyreek Hill beat his pregnant girlfriend (punched her in the face and stomach and choked her) and possibly beat his small son, too. Kareem Hunt kicked a woman. Antonio Brown has multiple alleged sexual assaults and called his GM a cracker and threatened to fight him. Deshaun Watson isn’t playing right now, but he’ll be back before you know it. Ray Lewis was involved in a murder and a cover up and is in the Hall of Fame and on TV. And on and on.
All this stuff is out in the open, not private emails, and no one cares.
Everyone does it is an indefensible position versus right vs wrong. R HYPOCRISY idiculous… so mob rules over ethics? Thats just silly. If you adopt me hat “NFL hypocrisy is rampant we are aligned
CORRECTION: If you say hypocrisy is rampant were are aligned in that viewpoint
Exactly.. All the moral high-horsing from players and fans alike since this happened – all of it taking away from WFT and the investigation into their shenanigans – and people are acting pious and they’re honking they have the moral high ground… Meanwhile Dan Snyder and “The Shield” are escaping the damning details and nature of what they’re responsible for.
Jon Gruden, regardless of what he’s said in emails, or any other form of communication, is taking the heat. I’d LOVE to see all emails sent through the league and see what each team’s ownership, and especially the NFL offices, say and are hiding from. I mean, just the fact that they’re letting Gruden get prison raped in the media while they sit back and keep counting each week’s profits is nauseating!
That is a lot of cashola for Gruden’s sudden “resignation”…
Wow. Hung alive over private emails which have been illegally sequestered by a private organisation without the permission of the parties and then leaked to the press. Jon Gruden had no relation to any Washington Redskins internal issues. As it seem it was the NFL head office leaking those emails at Roger Goodell’s behest, the NFL may be picking up the rest of Gruden’s contract.
The people for whom I feel most empathy here are all the black players who have ever said something nasty about white coaches who will lose their right to play and be deprived of years of salary. Thank heavens the Woke movement is building such peace and harmony among (wo)men or I’d be worried about some kind of civil unrest developing.
Absolutely! But the typical idiot fans out there (and the people who just want to gripe as if they have nothing to hide in their own lives) are just running around giving each other the pat on the back.. To those people – just remember it’s a matter of time before the faux “Woke” crowd come pounding down their doors saying “You did this, that and/or the other, we want our pound of flesh”!
You fake woke chuckleheads are in for the rudest awakening yet, and you’re all still thinking you’re better than people getting cancelled! No one is truly innocent and no one is truly above what other human beings do. You’re gonna learn that lesson the hard way in time.
The NFL clearly and deliberately “leaked” all these emails. Gruden is dumb for what he said and he sending emails like that but he should sue the NFL who thinks they can do whatever they want. Hope he takes the league down. And he wasn’t wrong about what he said about Goodell.
NFL is using Gruden as a cover up. No way the worst thing they found in 600k emails was Gruden cussing at people
they’re still investigating…
But allowing the media to take the spotlight off of the investigation.
Gee, I wonder why, “All of a sudden” they changed the team name after the years of Dan Snyder defiantly saying “FU” when the pressure was REALLY on his to do it.. Out of the blue we get “It’s WFT” like they “All of a sudden” became humble about the issue.
Some stupid F’in people out there!
They reported today there was nothing else in those 650000+ emails…sure!
He left quickly and without a fight. Sounds like a man that didn’t want to be there.
Wait, no ones saying he’s not guilty of being racist 10 years ago.. NO ONE… And he’s not going to stay and bring the circus to town because he thinks he’s bigger than the team..
Give the guy credit, he did the right thing now that he wasn’t doing 10 years ago.. Sounds like a man that has understands his position and also doesn’t want to be a distraction to his employers or players.
And then there’s the team W/L record.. You saying he wanted out even though his team was winning? That’s an even worse take!
Gruden willingly fell on his sword as far as we can know. any speculation that he was taken out, especially in light of LV’s onwers’ comments, makes no sense.
He stepped away because he loves his team and the Raiders organization. He knew the fallout was coming and didn’t want to be a distraction. In no way shape or form do I agree with what was uncovered but at the same time I feel like this is not something that should’ve come to light publicly this far down the road. People make mistakes, have said stupid things and people change. This is not a good look for the NFL and if they’re going to leak Gruden related stuff they better release it all.
He stepped away probably because he’s getting paid handsomely by ownership to do so.
Loving the team has sh_t to do with it!
That’s moronic! Football was always his passion (for starters), and he was ALWAYS a Raider at heart thanks to ownership.
Stop being a fool.. He had money before, plenty enough to never worry about expenses in his own lifetime.. You think he stepped away for money? The same money from the same contract that’s BACKLOADED (which means he won’t get anyway)?
Yet the NFL still has games on ESPN,which still employees Steve A Smith. Yup.
Always the double standard
There seems to be a lot of Gruden defenders but it’s now an everyday occurrence for the egotistical and arrogant celebrities to self destruct in dramatic fashion. I don’t think anyone seriously expected Chucky to survive in the NFL for the duration of that ten year contract. As Bum Phillips famously said, there are 2 kinds of coaches…those who have been fired and those who will be fired.
You do realize he’s been in the NFL for quite a long time? Like this 10 year contract was going to make/break him? Hahaha, the guy already had success, money etc. and already did his media thing.. If he really worried about how long he’d be around he’d not have come out of retirement to coach the Raiders AGAIN..
Jesus H… People are so blind!
I think you missed the point here. I’m stating that guys like him will find a way to implode sooner or later.
I’m willing to accept the term ‘class poor’ owner in the NFL vocabulary but ‘cash poor’?…gimme a break.
Trust me, there ARE enough people who feel like the anonymous Raider.
Racists get very mad when racists get fired for being racist.
Except Gruden wasn’t fired.
He walked away because he knew he couldn’t stand in front of his players after they knew the truth about him.
The criticism that the NFL is shielding every one else after bussing over Gruden is very valid, but it doesn’t change his situation.
Pretty obvious that Snyder has a ton of exposure there, so that he’s only gotten a slap on the wrist says he’s got the goods at least 17 of those 32 other owners.
So, your theory is that everyone suspicious of this firing is racist? How do you feel about DeSean Jackson?
Wait…Duece Gruden? What.
lmao if you have not seen a picture of him, do yourself a favor and google him. He’s built like a fire hydrant.
Deuce Gruden could probably bend a fire hydrant lol
Deuce Gruden could smash a fire hydrant.
Time for the Raiders to drop a Deuce…
Look for a statement from the Front office that this was an “isolated incident” and run and hide. If they looked at each level from ownership, coaches and players emails, text or any/all electronic communications the league will close its doors under the new PC universe.
Let’s download everyone ( Players, Owners, Coaches, etc)involved in the NFL emails and texts to get true transparency. I think we all would find this exposure very interesting to see what content is out there.
Gruden’s mistake wasn’t that he is racist. It was that he called Goodell some names. Unless the NFL finds other people doing the same thing this will be quickly swept under the rug.
If everyone who expressed an unfavorable opinion about Goodell had to leave the sport the NFL would probably cease to exist.
600,000+ E-mails, and they found one person? Sure……..
