Following Jon Gruden‘s abrupt departure midway through his fourth season back as Raiders HC, the franchise has moved Mike Mayock to the top of its decision-making hierarchy.
The Gruden-handpicked GM will now have a 51% say in roster decisions, Mark Davis said (via ESPN.com’s Paul Gutierrez, on Twitter). Interim HC Rich Bisaccia will slide into Mayock’s previous 49% say. While these somewhat arbitrary numbers indicate Bisaccia will be involved to a far greater degree, Mayock is now running things in Las Vegas. In addition to being named Las Vegas’ new interim HC, Bisaccia will retain his special teams coordinator responsibilities, per Gutierrez.

Gruden brought in Mayock to replace Reggie McKenzie as GM in 2019. Gruden was not previously believed to be on the hot seat — prior to the email scandal, of course — but Mayock was. The longtime analyst-turned-GM was viewed as a more logical fall guy for the Raiders’ personnel shortcomings in recent years, but he is now the face of the personnel department post-Gruden.
This arrangement might not last beyond this season, with Mayock tied to Gruden, but the third-year GM will be tasked with steering a franchise in turmoil. When asked about the state of the Raiders after they moved on from their $100MM coach, Davis said, via Gutierrez, to “ask the NFL; they have all the answers.” Davis said Monday night he accepted Gruden’s resignation but has yet to discuss the move in greater detail.
In the span of a week, the Raiders went from 3-0 to 3-2 and in the position to have an interim coach for their final 12 games. This story figures to produce more answers in the coming days and weeks. Strictly through a Raiders lens, they are in the historically unusual spot of being months away from an unplanned reboot.
At least he can be re-hired by ESPN!
Lol espn been letting go people that say anything wrong. No way he comes back
Hope it a joke because they just fired the host of nba the jump for things she said. They look very bad if they hire him or are you talking about raiders gm??
Mayock can get a job. Gruden’s apology tour will be around 2025 with former black athletes, and klenix.
“Gruden’s apology tour will be around 2025 with former black athletes, and klenix.”
That’s about as racist as Gruden’s comments.
He’s toxic now. PC wise. Nobody will touch Gruden for a while I think.
It’s not all that bad. These were supposed to be private emails. It’s embarrassingly fratty but otherwise a smaller network which wants a much higher profile in a big hurry would do very well to hire Jon Gruden. There’s lots of people who enjoy Gruden as a commentator. He’s probably done as a coach, more because he doesn’t seem to have “it” any more than because of emailgate.
It’s rather pathetic that Davis seems to be blaming the NFL for this situation. Mark needs to grow a pair and start acting like an adult.
You have seen his hair cut right? 3rd grade was long ago for me. I think the same for you!
I think one of the 3 stooges had a similar style haircut so in that respect it seems quite appropriate.
Kind of highly ironic?
A few careers were killed for mocking people on a “private” email setting, yet you appear to celebrate this fact by mocking the same people on a “public” forum.
The nfl doesn’t make coaches say what they say. Something was bound to happen if he wasn’t let go. Better to let him go now before it get worse
The NFL didn’t need to go public. They could have worked the issue behind the scenes. It was clearly a personal vendetta by someone in the NFL corporate offices.
The NFL let about 7 emails leak out of 600,000. Those emails were Gruden specific (and btw i’m a Raider fan and not a Gruden defender. He got what he deserves). I think in Davis’ mind, they let some smoke come out as a way to distract from the WFT investigation and it worked. It helps protect one owner while hurting another. When you look at the net worth of the two, you start understanding why that may be an OK option in the NFL’s eyes.
Or there were more by someone else higher up, and it would be much easier using a coach as a shiny distraction (especially one as high profile as Gruden) than, say, an owner. Or an NFL longtime familiar face.
Mayock was a good hire…by the NFL Network.
Agreed the nfl is about drafting well and managing the joke called salary cap. Better find a good GM in off-season who bring in his coach
What’s sad is Mayock doing mock drafts for his own team and still getting them wrong.
Well gruden also had a huge input in who was drafted.
The Raiders will miss Gruden as a coach, but from a player personnel perspective, they are in a much better spot. Gruden has a very long history of interfering and demanding certain players in the draft and busting on them. Mayock will do much better making the final personnel decisions himself.
I’ll echo that, ruckus. It’ll be so nice not to have to look at what Alabama and/or Clemson players are projected to go in the 3rd round to see who the Raiders will reach on with their 1st.
Agreed with ruckus.
No way with Mayock and Chuckie’s draft do they keep Mayock. Of course it is Mark Davis so who knows.
Those draft classes and epically bad draft picks are much more on Gruden than Mayock make no mistake of that.
If you read the story I think coach had a lot of say in who was draft. They gave him 51% say in the team. Now he gone mayock take over the 51% and a new guy get his 49%
Why aren’t other coaches emails aren’t checked What Gruden did is disgusting, but to check someone’s emails , is plainly targeted!!!!!!!!
Targeted? No. The finding of the emails was merely accidental. The WFT is under investigation, and one of the people that was involved is Bruce Allen (The person Gruden emailed)
The finding was likely coincidental, yes, but the release was clearly pretty targeted.
Period we live in a racist world!!!!! And now sports is the choice!
So…. If one guy has 51% say, his opinion wins every time. So…. What’s the point of giving these percentages?
I don’t think Mayock had anything to do with the drafts but that is just my hunch. I would imagine Mayock had more to do with drafting Maxx Crosby than he did Clelin Farrell.
I sure hope he had something to do with the draft, he’s the frickin GM.
Let’s start talking about why it matters what someone said 10 years ago! Why isn’t Andrew Dice Clay in prison? If millennials keep digging, everyone will be fired and they will rule the world. Do you really want that?
He was the GM in title only, and just for his opinions. Jon ran everything, and the 51%/49% say so thing pretty much proves it. No idea if Mayock can do the job but we’ll soon see.
How hypocritical is it for the NFL to basically rid itself of Jon Gruden but yet they’re going to have Snoop Dogg perform at halftime? What a joke. The NFL has become a joke.
No kidding. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Plus whatever silly things Jon Gruden said, his actions speak much louder than words. Gruden was early with encouraging black quarterbacks, rostered the only public gay player in the NFL.
Black QBs have been around long before Gruden and it seems ridiculous to suggest any player earns a roster spot based on his sexual preferences. I think the upshoot of all this is that in future interviews, coaching and GM candidates will have to answer a lot of questions on sensitive subjects not even related to football.
Has anyone read the actual e-mails? I tried, but the NYT has them behind a paywall. I’ve just read what others have said about them, but I’d like to see the e-mails themselves before making any complete decisions about Gruden.
As far as Mayock goes, Gruden seems to have had a pretty big influence in drafting and signings. I don’t know whether that means that Mayock was necessarily for or against those moves, but in any case, he’ll now be able to show us what he would do in terms of acquisitions. Gruden’s scheming was not really what got him down so much as his personnel decisions and preferences in my mind.
Didn’t Antonio Brown make racial slurs towards Mike Mayock? Isn’t Antonio Brown still in the NFL? Hypocrisy at its highest.
This was an obvious hit job. I’m not displeased that Gruden is gone, since he is too conservative for my tastes, and we had some weak valuations in our draft.
But they aren’t supposed to leak personal E-mails.
