The Texans are not expected to trade Deshaun Watson before today’s 4pm ET/3pm CT roster deadline, sources tell Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (Twitter link). Barring something unexpected, the Texans are poised to keep him into the regular season and, possibly, for the entire year.
This jibes with recent word that the Texans are willing to have Watson on the 53-man roster and inactive every week moving forward. Before the allegations, the Texans received offers including three first-round picks. Now, there are still offers with picks on the table, but clubs want those picks to be conditional based on Watson’s availability to play. For now, the Texans aren’t willing to accept such contingencies.
Watson would reportedly prefer a trade to the Dolphins but would not veto a deal that sends him to the Panthers. For now, he’s getting neither — the Texans are set to pay him $10.54MM to not play for them this season.
If I’m a Texan season ticket holder, I don’t know what to make of this situation. It’s hard to justify paying your hard earned dollars to attend games knowing the franchise is in a state of flux with your top player under investigation. It’s a mess.
I imagine Mark Cuban would be happy to take your hard earned dollars.
So tired of these Watson rumors…. The Texans aren’t going to get what they want.. Are they finally realizing that other FO’s aren’t as dumb as they are when trying to get 3 first round picks, two second round picks, 10.5 million dollars contract for someone who may not even play this year? Everyone wants to start rumors to drum up interests.. Beat writers, agents, and clubs…… All smoke screens. Watson isn’t going anywhere for that ridiculous asking price.
Maybe they were escorts & not masseuses……he will play again. Fbi looking at extortion will help watson
Great legal defense, these girls I sought out on social media for a professional massage and then sexually assaulted forcing them to file a complaint were actual escorts, or people who would actually be the last people to go to the police/courts. And I’m sure all 23+ were filing false claims to cover up their true business.
Watson’s behaviour both was awful and unwise, but it looks like the witnesses were gathered with purpose. There’s such a close relationship between Watson’s demand to leave Houston and the blossoming of this court case that it’s unlikely to be a co-incidence.
The large number of complainants could be a result of the large settlement for anyone who puts her name on the list. Perhaps approved complainants were given some “expenses” money up front. I would not trust the word of either the lawyers involved, the whole scenario is extremely seamy.
Watson is an idiot for putting himself in this situation. Still, even if convicted, the charges are not assault & battery or manslaughter or rape or child abuse or dog fighting. A civil settlement is more likely. The suit is money ball. Based on its track record, it would be very unusual if the NFL were to suspend Watson for even a full season.
The issue here is that McNair appears to be fanning the flames and encouraging prosecution of his star, while at the same time refusing to trade Watson somewhere where he could have a fresh start after settling the civil suits and serving whatever suspension the NFL sees fit to impose on him.
Only football related news on Watson this season is if he goes on the commissioners exemption list or not. He’s not playing he’s not going anywhere
All things considered, keeping and stashing Watson for the season is actually likely Houston’s smartest move. They likely wouldn’t make the postseason even with Watson playing, they won’t get what they want for him in a trade at this moment… Best they can hope for is that some or even much of the off-field stuff goes away and they can try again for a haul or semi-haul next year.
Houston would have had a haul this year if it wasn’t for
Cal McNair’s totally unrealistic expectations and vindictiveness, attempting to keep Deshaun Watson in chains semi-permanently.
An awful situation could not be worse handled.
So what your basically saying is that if Cal McNair was just a bit more inept, he would be in the same league as Daniel Snyder.
No. Bruce Allen was this petty and vindictive. Snyder was foolish to allow Bruce Allen free rein for so long. Not that Daniel Snyder wins any personality contests either.
Based on the last couple of years, Cal McNair looks to win worst and most self-destructive NFL owner by a landslide.
Imagine being cut because they’d rather keep him on the active roster. Something is going on that he’s not on the commissioner’s exempt list yet. I get the nfl wants to stay clear until the investigation is done, but you’re interviewing his accusers. You’re already in it. Something smells fishy.
Patriots.
