RGIII has agreed to join ESPN as an on-air personality (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). However, the free agent quarterback has an out clause in his contract that would allow him to return to the game, should an opportunity arise.
Griffin also drew interest from FOX with both networks eyeing him as a college football and NFL analyst. RG3 reportedly impressed in his on-camera auditions, prompting a bit of a bidding war. Ultimately, the 31-year-old went with the folks in Bristol.
Griffin has previously returned to the NFL after a hiatus. Griffin did not play in 2017 after he was cut by the Browns. The former Offensive Rookie of the Year signed with the Ravens in 2018, where he served as a backup — first for Joe Flacco, then for Lamar Jackson. Griffin, however, threw just one touchdown pass with four interceptions as a Raven with a 57% completion rate.
A hamstring injury ended Griffin’s 2020 campaign, prompting the Ravens to evaluate younger options like Trace McSorley and 2020 UDFA Tyler Huntley. The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, meanwhile, may be done with football.
The amazing thing about RG3’s career is that he would quickly tell you it’s not his fault. May fit right in with modern media types….
Can’t be any worse at ESPN then SAS.
I mean I would say Shanahan definitely played a significant role in how his career played out. He should have never been out there with his injury in his rookie season and he was never the same.
Yes, but he was the one clamoring to get back in. Granted Shannahan should’ve never let him, but he was as much to blame as his coaches.
Every player wants to play in big games regardless of how they feel.
@angels24: I hope your not expecting an up vote from Vontae Davis.
That’s when ownership and management and coaches have to say ‘no’. They destroyed his leg in 1 playoff game on a field as muddy as we ever played on.
I’d be more inclined to place the blame on the team trainer and medical staff. They’re the ones who are suppose to have the expertise to make go or no-go decisions based on a players health.
No, Shanahan made the call himself.
So sick of modern media types claiming that RG3 being a bust isn’t their fault.
Hopefully they’re paying per show
Bad decision by Griffin to join ESPN, as he’ll get lost among all the similar-sounding talking heads.
BREAKING- RG3 has just pulled a vocal cord.
Now RG3 remember everything revolves around Tom Brady and the Drama Queen James. If you forget either of those two key points, the Rat infested network will fire you.
Think the production crew will tell him to “break a leg” his first time going live?
espn just getting worse and worse each day.
Baker won the Heisman, next up Trace McSorley
Too bad how his playing days panned out. Certainly could have been so much different $or so many reasons. Nice to see him parlay it into a way to stay in the league. I look forward to hearing his insight to football.
Oh what could have been…
He also had issues running a conventional NFL offense. Most of the offense was twisted to simplify his style. But you also need to look at the hits he was taking. You simply can’t take hits like that and survive. And that was on him
