Saquon Barkley refuses to reveal his availability for the start of next season, and the Pro Bowl running back continued that trend today. Speaking to reporters, Barkley said he’s unsure if he’ll be good to go for Week 1.
“I don’t know. We’ll see,” Barkley said (via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan). “Taking it day by day. Just listening to my body. Whenever I’m able to get out there, just make sure I’m 110 percent. Not just for … my well-being, but just so I go out there and compete at a high level and show the world who Saquon is.”
The former second-overall pick has continued to rehab from his ACL injury, and previous reports indicated that he’ll be limited at the start of training camp. Barkley told reporters that he’s yet to talk with head coach Joe Judge about their August game plan, but the team isn’t expected to make him a full participant until at least halfway through the month.
The Giants are set to open the regular season against the Broncos on September 12, which will be nearly a year since Barkley suffered his torn ACL. It makes sense for both sides to be cautious as they manage the injury, but it’s not unrealistic to expect the running back on the field come Week 1.
Meanwhile, the Giants could be looking to add some extra depth as they prepare for a potential Barkley absence. The team worked out running backs Tyler Ervin and Mike Weber earlier today, according to ESPN’s Field Yates (via Twitter). The team also auditioned defensive back Jordyn Peters.
McCoy and AP are available.
I’d genuinely be alright with AP. Couldn’t hurt to bring him in. Maybe he plays alright. If not, no biggie.
I would too but I read that AP would prefer to sign with a contender so not sure the Giants would be the right fit for him. I could see him waiting it out to pick his spot when a team is in need.
I genuinely like Barkley, but with comments like “my well-being, but just so I go out there and compete at a high level and show the world who Saquon is.”…..he better start showing the Giants who he is as quickly as possible or the press will begin to eat him alive as just another failed Giants #1 draft pick!
What is the deal with players like Rodgers and Barkley “refusing” to tell the public what is going on? Can’t you just say things are still fluent and a lot of things depend on what happens from here on out? Rodgers won’t even open his mouth. Won’t say if he wants a trade or not. Won’t say what he wants. Won’t say what his issues are or how he wants this to end. Won’t say anything.
What is up with this crap and why do some people (Rodgers specifically) feel that they are bigger than the team and the league. What an entitled, arrogant, me-first/screw everybody else attitude Rodgers has. No other athlete in ANY sport has ever acted in this fashion. EVER. Rodgers apparently thinks he’s above all of them and everyone else on the planet.
Now Barkley is “refusing” to let people know if he feels he will be ready for week 1? Whatever, man. I’m done with these entitled jerks. Money really changes some people into ugly human beings.
Pro Sports changed a long time ago; it’s barely what it was when I was a kid.
I’ve heard the whole argument of players no longer letting owners make money off their talent while dictating everything else … and I guess I understand that perspective somewhat
But the writing was on the wall when LeBron jumped (first) to Miami and began (and continues to) actively recruit friends. It’s more obvious in the NBA, but when a QB (and it’s not only Rodgers) takes a public stance over Management/Ownership not consulting him on things like drafting, free agency, etc?
One of the first players who comes to mind who had more justification than Rodgers yet never did: Barry Sanders
meh
I’m just an old guy shaking his fist while yelling at clouds
The Giants won more games when Barkley was not on the field, it’s the nature of today’s game.
Don’t get mad. Just look for yourself.
