Richard Sherman could wait until training camp to sign with his next team, and the veteran defensive back naturally wants to play for a contender. In a profile on Bloomberg, Sherman hinted that he’d like to sign with a team that’d give him the greatest chance at a ring.
“I want to get to a team that’s competing for a championship, so that’s what I’m focused on and waiting for a right opportunity,” he said. “When it comes, that’s where I’ll be.”
Sherman has been a popular name this offseason. We most recently heard that he was in talks with the 49ers, where he had spent the past three years. Sherman has also had talks with the Seahawks, the team that he spent the first seven seasons of his career with, and he’s generated interest from the Raiders and Saints. The Jets have continually been mentioned as a potential suitor thanks to the presence of head coach Robert Saleh, who spent time with Sherman both in Seattle and San Francisco.
The Stanford product was limited to only five games this past year and recently turned 33, but he was still a second-team All-Pro in 2019. He’ll be an interesting gamble for a team, as he’s past his prime and coming off an injury-plagued year, but also played at a very high level not too long ago. The veteran has indicated that he’d like to play two more years.
I think the Cowboys and Dan Quinn may take a flyer. He used to play for Dan Quinn with the legion of Boom. He’s a valuable leader for the Cowboys two young corners.
he said he wants a ring
Still think it would be smart for him to go to Pittsburgh. Haden, Sutton and Pierre is not going to be the answer if they are trying to win, Haden is good, Sutton is a question he has never started a whole season, but has always filled in good and then James Pierre is a undrafted free agent in 2020 for Florida ATL that has not proven a single thing and Sam thing for Shakur Brown who’s a UDA this year…. so if Pittsburgh don’t shore up them DBs , Minkah,Bush and Watt can’t cover everyone and QBs will tear them apart and they won’t get far. Sherman to Pittsburgh just makes to much sense unless they have something else in the works. Not to mention Sherman has said sign him up and he’d bring his winter cloths. So he has interest in Pittsburgh.
I don’t think they play the right defense for Sherman. At 33, changing to a completely different skillset is going to be much more difficult, and the Steelers’ cap situation is already tight for next year.
On a cheap enough contract he could play outside in sub-packages with Sutton rotating inside or Sherman may even be able to slide up to S with Edmunds moving down into the box.
But no he’s likely not an every down corner in their suddenly man-heavy scheme. And I doubt he’d see Pittsburgh as enough of a legit SB contender to play for peanuts.
So much for all of that tampering stuff with Jon Gruden that everyone was so upset about.
The reason he has been popular this off season is nobody really wanted to pay him and everytime he sneezed he had a column written about it.
Particularly weird to see him covered by Bloomberg. Did they accidently mistake him for Warren Buffett or Elon Musk?
