Tim Tebow has inspired another former player to attempt a comeback at a new position. Former NFL running back Brandon Jacobs announced on Twitter that he’s “serious” about returning to the league as a defensive end.

“I can still run, I am strong and there’s no way Tim Tebow is a better athlete than I am,” the 2005 fourth-rounder tweeted. “I just need a shot that’s it!! If I can’t cut it I’ll take it like a man. Just give me one chance that’s all!!”
The soon-to-be 39-year-old hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2013, but Jacobs claims that he’s currently in as good of shape as he was during his playing career.
“Body feels great, even at 38,” Jacobs told Josina Anderson (Twitter link). “Right now I‘m at about 260lbs—same weight I played as a RB. I’m switching positions now because it’s something I should’ve done before, and honestly a position I can play….People always said I was a running back in a D-lineman’s body. It doesn’t cost anything to bring me into training camp. It doesn’t hurt to look.”
It’s hard to envision too many teams being interested in a former running back who’s trying to transition to defensive line, especially one who’d be one of the oldest players in the league. Maybe the Giants could give him a chance; Jacobs won a pair of Super Bowls and set the franchise record for rushing touchdowns during his eight years with the organization (two stints). Jacobs was known for his ability to shake defenders and break tackles, and he’d be looking to use that unique perspective if he ends up getting a shot from a team.
George Blanda planning a comeback too?
When’s Favre coming back?
I could see him as a long snapper
Blanda still has a few good years left!
Yep….but who’s gonna dig him up?
Well…we were kind of hoping you were, Lou.
Close to 40 but if he would work for cheap, give him a shot. Doubt he makes it through camp but who knows.
I would at least give him a look see. What if he is in great shape? Spot duty, he could be a big asset.
So now we are going to see every retired player think they can come back at a different position? Tony Romo coming back as a left tackle? Joe Thomas lost a bunch of weight maybe he will be a WR.
Well there was a time when players were required to play both sides of the ball to make an NFL roster. They were paid a pittance compared to todays players (most of which could not handle the task).
“most of which could not handle the task”
Most of those two-way players carried between 180 (Sammy Baugh, 182 lbs.)and 240 pounds (Chuck Bednarik, 233 lbs.) on their frames, not 240-340. Even the linemen topped out around 240. You try carrying around 300 pounds playing 110 snaps a game instead of 40-70.
Certainly players today are more massive but a major reason they could not handle the task is that the game has become very specialized. Nobody is playing 110 snaps a game. Offenses average about 1000 snaps over a 16 game schedule which works out to about 60-65 snaps per game if you played every snap…which few players do.
You’re forgetting that in my example, I was talking about a modern player who weighs 300 lbs., which would have to be a lineman, playing two ways, on offense and defense. So I added up the 65-70 snaps a game that a starting O lineman typically plays with the 40-45 snaps a game that a rotational DT might play to get my 110 two-way snaps per game.
i would tend to believe physically they could.
Tebow > Jacobs
Sign Henry Hynoski to give them bookends on the d-line.
I’m guessing Tebow is the better athlete, probably much better
Aaron Hernandez planning a comeback?
Lmao
He’s hanging out waiting for the phone to ring.
Jags should sign him. Would make for an interesting season of hard knocks for HBO
God, I am ashamed to admit this but…I actually would watch this.
I mean, absolutely zero chance that this happens. Zero. But I can’t say that I absolutely would not pay attention. Jacobs knows what it takes it to be a pro-he has to know though that he needs way more than that and being in shape to be even a serviceable third string defensive end. So he should know that this is just not happening. But it’s his time, and if some team wants to see what he can do, a tryout hurts no one. A signing though? Let’s just say I’ll take the over. It’d be my only chance to make any money.
Sounds pretty full of himself
Nah, he’s just another wannabe blactivist that can’t cope with the fact that Tebow has a job now
…that’s just absurd man. nothing Jacobs said read of acrimony. guy just wants another chance. i dont think its anger as much as motivation. guys seem to be more inclined to make comebacks seeing. more and more others doing it.
He specifically referenced Tebow’s signing as the reason he tweeted out his desire to come back. He specifically referenced Tebow not being as good an athlete as him. It’s just an unheralded Stephen A Smith approach to the whole situation
Sounds like he needs some paper…..
“Nope. Don’t even bother asking.”
-Joe Namath
Uncle Rico is warming up his arm….believes he is better than Tim Tebow
its these sort of comebacks that make sports great. not enough in football imo.
He’s not worth $1M a year.
This is hilarious…. enjoy your retirement
