Russell Wilson isn’t the only Seahawks quarterback staying put for 2021. Seattle has re-signed backup signal-caller Geno Smith, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.
Smith has been Wilson’s clipboard holder for the past two seasons now. It’s been a pretty relaxing job as Smith has only appeared in one game over the past two years, attempting five passes last season. The 39th overall pick of the 2013 draft, Smith spent his first two pro seasons as the Jets’ starter.
Since then he’s started only two games, one more for the Jets in 2016 and one for the Giants in 2017. He then backed up Philip Rivers with the Chargers in 2018. Smith isn’t exactly young anymore, as he’ll turn 31 in October.
As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Seahawks drafted a quarterback in the middle rounds next week, especially with Wilson’s future with the team still somewhat up in the air.
It would be a massive surprise if they drafted a QB. Particularly since they only have three picks total.
Seattle will end up with 5 picks I bet. The only way they don’t trade their 2nd round pick is if someone falls that they don’t expect to be there.
It seems every year, they trade down for more picks. When 3 picks turns into 5 or 6, I wouldn’t be surprised if a QB was taken.
There is nothing up in the air about Wilson as that was absurd from the start. Maybe down the road but no way this year.
Geno has the best job right now. Front row seats to games, gets paid to watch them, can say he was in the NFL, and still maintain his wits while retiring in his 30’s. Kudos to you kid.
Clipboard Jesus made holding a clipboard famous for back up QBs. He was so good Seattle got him and he did everything he could to not get the starting job.
Then made it back to SD where he could surf before or after practice. I imagine he is still surfing living off the millions he made. Good for him.
I have always said back up QB is the best job in the world. Well until it isn’t. These back ups have it easy now they don’t even carry clipboards.
And getting into blowouts games with no pressure.
I’ll file this one under “backups who don’t even make sense as backups”, but maybe that’s just me.
Better to have a guy like this as a backup versus someone who still thinks they’re a starter.
