The Cardinals are signing quarterback Cole McDonald (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). McDonald will provide offseason depth for Arizona as he begins his push to make the fall cut.
The former University of Hawaii standout has yet to see live action in the NFL. The Titans snagged him in the seventh-round of last year’s draft, but dropped him in August to make room for Trevor Siemian. While with the Rainbow Warriors, McDonald finished third in the nation in passing yards. Most evaluators chalked that up to Hawaii’s highly-aggressive offense, but McDonald is out to prove that he deserves a good chunk of that credit.
There’s a path for McDonald to stick on the depth chart. Backup Chris Streveler stumbled in the season finale as he filled in for Kyler Murray. Meanwhile, Brett Hundley is out-of-contract. The Cardinals didn’t sign McDonald immediately after his December audition, but it seems that he made a strong enough impression on Kliff Kingsbury & Co.
Not only will McDonald be leaving the farm,
He will be giving up that fast food job…
at that place that has served….
Billions and Billions !!
I always love these lines: ‘While with the Rainbow Warriors, McDonald finished third in the nation in passing yards. Most evaluators chalked that up to Hawaii’s highly-aggressive offense..’
So the QB did his job & threw the ball all over the field racking up massive stats. Yet somehow it’s the system not him? Mahomes seems to do pretty well in both an air raid and Andy Reid’s systems. G Minshew wasn’t too bad in college and has solid enough numbers in his limited time starting in jax.
Mahomes was the exception to the rule. How many other Texas tech qb (and no Baker doesn’t count) had careers in the league outside of couple year backup. Minshew was another Leach system product. There’s a reason Jax is getting another qb ASAP.
It’s a true statement. He’s in a system that leads to bloated passing stats. Nothing wrong with that statement, but he’s not Joe Burrow setting passing records randomly for a season at Hawaii either.
Here’s a short list of bad QB’s drafted in the top 10 recently. Tua T (rumors are about he’s tradeable), D Jones & Haskins in 2019. Rosen, & Bradford in 2018 & Mitch T 2017. They all played in different systems and haven’t done squat in the pros. And Baker really got better when the Browns went to a heavier running team and less reliant on him.
This year, the Bama and UF QB most likely won’t pan out. Yet will almost certainly be top 40 picks. Until you have a QB, draft one every year.
This
You know who also did really well in Hawaii’s offense a decade ago? Colt Brennan. I have a strong feeling that had more to do with the system than the QB and the same likely applies here
He once threw a pineapple for a 50 yard gain.
McDonald is a very good athlete so there is some potential the try to make him a Taysom Hill type, same goes for Strevler
This is the kind of guy who would benefit from an alternative football league like the AAF.
