Colts quarterback Philip Rivers has acknowledged that Sunday’s game against the Jaguars could be his last. The 39-year-old may have some extra incentive to retire, because multiple TV networks are already eyeing him for the broadcast booth, Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports hears.

Rivers, who is rounding out a one-year, $25MM deal, is seen by some network execs as the next Tony Romo. ESPN and CBS both showed interest in Rivers around this time last year, before he ultimately decided to continue playing. This time around, there could be new suitors in the mix. If Apple or Amazon wind up airing games, they could turn to Rivers for name value and high-level analysis.
With Rivers under center, the Colts have won three of their last four to keep their playoff hopes alive. After falling short against the Steelers, the Colts will look to punch their ticket with a win over the Jaguars. They’ll need a Titans loss to go along with that, in order to seal the division, or three favorable outcomes to make it as a Wild Card team.
I think PR will be a tremendous commentator! He has deep knowledge of the game, he is also firebrand, colorful, and energetic! What else is there?
Quarterback commentators are the reason TV remotes have a mute button. Most have tunnel vision and know nothing beyond the position they played. Anyone who ever watched Pat Summerall or Paul Maguire do a broadcast knows special teams players are more entertaining and knowledgeable.
I would have to disagree. QBs make for great commentators because they know how to work an offense and read a defense.
If QBs are knowledgeable then why aren’t they trusted to call plays anymore? Why do they need OCs making the important offensive decisions?
It’s a lot different to analyze what’s happening in a game than it is to recognize what’s happening and instantly react to it on the field. Tony Romo is incredible on the broadcast, but struggled in the playoffs as a player. Comparing the two is apples to oranges.
The player has a lot of other stuff going on during the game and the OC is there to help simplify it and make a plan. If Rivers is on TV, he just has to explain to viewers what’s going on. He’s smart enough to do that well.
Nobody compares to Pat McAfee though…
That is asinine. Why would you want to go through the rigors of an NFL season calling plays when you can enjoy a cushy job in the booth that pays more? And public sentiment about Romo as a commentator is overwhelmingly positive, even if he sometimes goes overboard.
QBs shouldn’t be allowed to call plays on the field for a wide variety of reasons. No position should. It’s distracting and takes away from their focus. That doesn’t mean a single NFL player can’t be a commentator. Just a dumb statement all around.
Paul Maguire was the balls. I recall the year in the 80’s at the halfway point, the NYJ were going to lose every remaining game. Fans were pissed, but he was spot on.
Bring back Dan Dierdorf!!
He’s definitely underrated and does an excellent job for his alma mater Michigan.
Colts should replace Rivers with Dak Prescott.
At 28 and coming off contract he’d be perfect in leading that organisation for the next decade.
Colts have great protection with that OLine, can let Mack leave and keep Taylor and Hines as their two RBs. They also have alright depth at WR and TE giving Dak some nice options. That defence had abit of a down year but they have loads of potential and a couple stars.
They also have the money to spend on Dak considering Rivers, Brissett and Mack are all going off contract. In Free Agency I’d look at drafting another a OT in the first as an insurance policy and future planning, then in the second I’d take a WR to develop with Pitman as the future top targets of this team for Dak. Then after giving Dak some young offensive pieces I’d look to just solidify that defence with LB, CB and S in the next couple rounds.
Honestly, I have never thought about this yet Dak Prescott going to the Colts makes perfect sense. Maybe pair him up with Allen Robinson and let it rip!
A-Rob isn’t going anywhere.
Can see Robinson going there too.
I think Dak to Indy (Carson Wentz should be a fallback option at the right price).
At WR I’d let Hilton leave, draft someone in the second round and also sign Curtis Samuel to a decent contract. Then long with Pitman and Campbell you have a set young receiving core.
Dak isn’t leaving Dallas, imo. I understand why there is talk of it. At the end of the day though, if Dak were to go light it up in Indy while the Cowboys struggled, I’d hate to be the guy answering those questions in Dallas. It’s too big of a gamble to move off a franchise QB when they were playing well pre-injury. This is why Dallas will pay the freight.
Rivers would be awesome on calls in crucial situations. Nobody could describe better how to throw a Interception and lose the game at an opportune time and throw a baby fit all at the same time.
With Phillip Rivers as commentator, you know you’ll have a passionate man with no worries about him swearing.
When was the last time a commentator cursed on air? I remember maybe 15-20 years ago Al Michaels dropping an S-bomb because he thought they were still on commercial break. Can’t recall any others.
He has 25 million reasons to come back and play. A lot more then tv will pay him.
Agreed. Rivers had a productive season and will have suitors to do it one more year at a premium. He may be wealthy but 25 million more is 25 million more. All comes down to what he wants I guess but i can’t imagine him not factoring in 25 million
Phyllis Cry Me a Rivers commentating on TV? No thanks.
Has Philip Rivers ever said an interesting thing in his life?
Not saying he hasn’t, just that I have not heard it.
