After firing Adam Gase this week, the Jets’ head coaching search is underway. However, owner Woody Johnson won’t be among those interviewing candidates, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

Woody Johnson is currently rounding out his term as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. While he ties up those loose ends, his brother and CEO Christopher Johnson will lead the search. Woody will be kept in the loop, but he won’t chat directly with the candidates.
For all of their warts, the Jets still hold appeal for candidates. Playing in the country’s largest media market, the Jets are armed with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. Trevor Lawrence probably won’t be available, but they could still choose from prospects like Ohio State’s Justin Fields, BYU’s Zach Wilson, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. Many believe that they will take a QB and deal Sam Darnold, but moving the No. 2 pick and keeping the USC product is also an option.
In addition to the Jets, the Lions, Falcons, Texans, Jaguars, and Chargers are also seeking a new head coach. Before the week is through, we could see more NFL teams join the list.
just because the new administration is coming in doesnt mean Johnson will be replaced on day one, week one, or even month one. some ambassadors last years before they are replaced simply because it takes a while to replace all of them.
Those who stick around are probably career diplomats who reached the level of ambassador based on their experience and skill, not just someone rich enough to buy the post through campaign donations.
Sums up a losing franchise owner. Won’t even talk to potential major hires? Enjoy another top 5 pick next year Jets fans. And why even be fans, the owner isn’t. Spend elsewhere.
arty! It’s probably for the best anyway. None of the Johnsons should be involved in the HC search, their all clueless. Actually I’d have them lead the process so I know who not to hire.
Since Woody bought the team, they have six playoff appearances in 20 years. In the last ten years, they have a grand total of one winning season. It’s probably a good thing if he’s nowhere near the decision-making process.
All the bad coaching hires around the league tell me that owners don’t know enough about football to find out in an interview if someone can be a good head coach.
“Woody Johnson is currently rounding out his term as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.”
Ambassadors do not serve “terms”. He might be assuming that he will be relieved of his duties (as I’m sure Ambassador to the UK is a plush, sought-after gig), but in theory he could serve indefinitely.
The organization is so dysfunction now that they might as well put Woody Woodpecker in charge.
His track record is as bad as the coaches he’s hired so this is a positive development.
