“Touchdown Jesus” has found a new home. After getting cut by the Bills earlier this week, wideout Jake Kumerow has been claimed by the Saints (per NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport on Twitter).
The 28-year-old receiver joined the Bills practice squad back in September, and he ultimately made six appearances for Buffalo, with most of his playing time coming on special teams. Kumerow played 17 total offensive snaps for the Bills, hauling in a single one-yard touchdown reception.
Following stints with the Bengals and Patriots to begin his career, Kumerow became a fan favorite in Green Bay. He ultimately spent three seasons with the Packers, including a 2019 campaign where he collected 12 receptions for 219 yards and one score. Kumerow also went to school at Wisconsin–Whitewater, earning a pair of first team All-WIAC nods.
While Kumerow will presumably continue to play a special teams role in New Orleans, he should also have a chance at some offensive snaps. After all, the Saints currently have five wide receivers (Michael Thomas, Tre’Quan Smith, Bennie Fowler, Deonte Harris, and Marquez Callaway) sitting on IR. Kumerow will have a chance to compete against Emmanuel Sanders, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and Juwan Johnson during the Saints’ regular season finale next weekend.
Why is he called Touchdown Jesus? I kept waiting for the explanation.
He has a beard and long hair
For some reason people think any white guy with long brown hair and a beard looks like Jesus. Never really understood the humor value.
Esp since Jesus wasn’t white.
Thx to both of you.
Callaway played yesterday.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start. The Saints’ receiving corps has been absolutely miserable the last few games. Sanders is by far the best, and while he’s had several big plays, he’s struggled getting open and dropped a few passes that are uncharacteristic of him. Cool has had the exact same issues, and those two are the only ones who have had much of an impact. The others have done next to nothing.
This issue is particularly glaring when Brees has started since coming back because Taysom Hill was scrambling or running on designer QB runs much of the time. It might sound crazy, but the Saints’ WR corps has looked like the worst in the NFL over the last two games, along with the Steelers’.
Exactly. Even Sanders was partly responsible for one of Brees’ picks last night. My guess is that the Saints’ offense is dependent on chemistry between the passer and receiver, which doesn’t work as well with so much turmoil at the latter (and former) position
Agreed, except I’d say Sanders was wholly responsible. I really like him, but as you’ve said, his chemistry with Brees has looked off for most of the year. He’s produced a handful of big plays, but looks lost on others. Perhaps the lack of the offseason is the reason, but he and Brees haven’t connected as many of us expected them to.
