The Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter). The move comes after the Jets latest loss to the Raiders, dropping them to 0-12.

Fans have mostly directed their ire towards head coach Adam Gase this year, but, so far, the Jets have resisted calls for his firing. For now, Williams is the lone coach to get the heave-ho, but no one would be surprised to see additional house cleaning between now and the end of the year. It’s worth noting that the Jets also employ Williams’ son — Blake Williams — as a defensive assistant.
Williams has built a career as a defensive guru, but his Jets unit ranked 29th in the NFL this year. The last straw might have come on Sunday when he called an all-out blitz on the final play, leaving one outmatched cornerback to guard Henry Ruggs III. Ruggs burned him and scored a 46-yard touchdown, costing the Jets their first W of the season.
In Williams’ defense, this Jets team was clearly not built to win. That was clear when the Jets shipped safety Jamal Adams to the Seahawks and later sent linebacker Avery Williamson to the Steelers. They’ve also been sans C.J. Mosley, though it’s fair to wonder how much the high-priced linebacker would have helped.
Weren’t the Jets defense actually okay?
Jets defense was surprisingly decent last year but they have been just as atrocious this year as the offense. Losing Jamal Adam’s was the biggest loss but the veteran cornerback they brought in bombed and adding Avery Williamson back and a couple of drafted rookies didn’t make up for the loss of Adam’s. The other issue is that Gregg Williams threw his HC under the bus a few times publicly.
His only excuse can be that his defense is always in the field because the offense has so many 3-and-outs but they are last in so many categories.
The all-out blitz was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
This is all due to yesterday’s catastrophe. Williams is actually a pretty good coordinator, but he’s overly aggressive and a horrible person
Because you know him on a personal level?
No, but I watched the Saints during Bountygate and the Thursday Night matchup earlier this year when his defense took unnecessary cheap shots at Denver’s quarterback (Rypien). If you don’t think Gregg Williams is a dirty coach, then I have some oceanfront property in Iowa to sell
hey, at least he’s not the Bengals ST coach
He was a huge part of New Orleans cheap shotting Favre about dozens of times in the Vikings loss to NO , probably costing the Vikings a Superbowl win..,,,dozens of low hits on Farve’s lower legs , dozens of late hits….hit that would send Rodgers out of his minds ( nfl would NEVER let Rodgers EVER get hit like Farve was over and over and over)
i think williams is a bad coach too. yo, very interested in that oceanfront property. is it near the birth place of captain james t. kirk in riverside.
Apparently he has a reputation for being a jerk. While he’s good at his craft, he eventually wears out his welcome. It’s probably easier to list who he hasn’t worked for.
He cost them what might be their only W of the year. And I know Marcus Maye was PO’d. Might be a locker room approved choice.
He should get a bonus on the way out the door for helping keep that #1 draft pick possible!!!! Looked to me like they threw the game there on the last play to keep the top pick!!!!
It wasn’t just the last play. The play right before, Carr overthrew Agahlor also.
Two consecutive plays where a WR gets behind the defense in a 4pt game is unacceptable
Yes, this is it. Completely burnt on a game-winning hail mary, only to be saved by Carr overthrowing Agahlor. Did he learn anything? Did he notice that the Raiders were prepared to pick up the blitz? Nope. He just dialed up the same play. He deserves this firing.
That was actually a smart move by the Jets on Agholor. Had they allowed a quick TD, the Jets would’ve just scored their own TD as time ran out. With as bad as the Raiders defense was, it was a matter of when, not if.
Was really hoping Williams would stick around so he could achieve the feat of coordinating two 0-16 defenses. Not another man in the league more deserving of that honor
Haha this is the top comment on this thread, Gregg Williams always works for bad teams because good coaches know he’s a scumbag, but an all out blitz to leave Henry Ruggs 1on1 with ruggs specialty fly route means the not only is he a scumbag but very clearly and idiot
Isnt securing the #1 overall pick the plan at this point? There’s zero point in winning games.
Not for the current team, no. But for the actual franchise and the small handful of people who will actually still be employed there next year, yes.
stop it
Don’t discount the shame of being potentially the third ever team to lose every game. Even Richie Kotite won one game in the 1-15 season in the 90s. I’m just praying the Jags win their second game so the Jets can surprise the Pats or whoever one game.
Hopefully this is the end of his coaching career, should have been permanently banned after running bountygate. Not sure how any player could respect this man knowing he was in favor of intentionally maiming players.
Shocked there is no mention of the ridiculous play call at the end of yesterday’s game.
The third paragraph covers that.
I should learn to read all of the paragraphs!!!!
It mentions it but does not mention the previous play, when he also called an all out blitz and would have given up a TD if Carr did not overthrow Agahlor.
Williams gone + Gase protected = pure stupidity
The Bears next head coach right here
If the Bears were looking for a defensive minded replacement they would just give Pagano the job. I think Williams might resurface in Texas as an assistant.
I hope he is rehired in the off season. He did us a favor yesterday.
Jets fans make me laugh. For years it has always been about the next guy. The same way the Knicks always were waiting for LeBron to become a FA and sign with them, or the Mets saying they were going to be players in this years FA market. (And I need to qualify I am a fan of all 3 of these teams) first it was Suck for Sanchez, then after 4 seasons, He sucks, let’s Suck for Sam, after 3 seasons, he sucks, let’s Tank For Trevor, and trust me after 3 seasons of him running for his life they’ll be chanting Aching for Arch (Manning).
How about let’s get an OL, some WR weapons, and a decent coaching staff before we keep looking for he next it QB?
Certainly not a good call, but the DB played that double move horribly! Why bite on the first move??? Play back…way back give Ruggs a cushion, heck should have given him two cushions – especially in single coverage.
The DB blew the play IMO.
Yes, the DB did bite, but the DC knows he has an undrafted rookie DB 1on1 against a extremely fast WR. Ok, if you dont want to go full prevent, but you should at least have the LB dropping so the DBs do t have to worry about the inside.
This was all typical Jets pandering to fans. What has been worse the stupidity of Williams or Gase over the entire year. What about Douglas? They all need to go same as the owner.
Dumb move. He helped Jets fan get one step closer to Lawerence. Williams did the right thing as Carr was struggling against all the pressure with short throws or overthrows the entire 4th Q……That CB should be cut as he bit on a short route when the only play was the deep ball. The safeties of the Jets we getting burned most of the day so there is no guarantee they would have been in the right position.
Patricia will team up with Gase in 2021 and, … pretty much guarantee another winless year.
And they’ll bring in O’Brien to be the OC
Scapegoated so hard after throwing that game lmao
So the Jets were on the verge of throwing away the only positive aspect of their season—the first overall choice, and the chance to draft anyone they want—so their DC stops that from happening and they fire him? Yeah, that makes sense. Winning a game could be disastrous for the Jets.
Every player on your team hates Gase so let’s fire the DC instead when will the wake up
He should have been fired before he left the stadium.
Firing Williams before Gase is the most Jets thing I’ve ever seen.
As a Raiders’ fan, thanks. I was so embarrassed today, I didn’t even wear my new Raiders’ mask to work.
As a RS fan, let me just put this in context: the call yesterday was 10x as bad as Grady Little leaving Pedro in.
Gase & Williams should’ve been fired before the Jets had a chance to run off those last 4 seconds. This is where the Jets need someone like George Steinbrenner. Neither one of those guys would’ve been around by the time post-game interviews took place.
