The Titans’ ownership situation has presented a few questions over the past several years, but some Saturday news should help provide stability for the franchise.
Susie Adams Smith agreed to sell her share of the team to an Adams family-controlled business (KSA Industries, Inc.), according to Teresa Walker of The Associated Press. This will make her sister, Amy Adams Strunk, a 50% owner of the Titans.
While other Adamses will control the other 50%, Adams Strunk will serve as the Titans’ controlling owner. This comes ahead of next week’s latest round of owners meetings. The timing here is notable, considering Roger Goodell can fine teams that do not have a controlling owner up to $10MM.
“With this transaction, we are pleased to ensure that the legacy started by my father will continue in our family,” Adams Strunk said, via Walker. “We are thrilled to make this commitment and will continue to invest in our team’s future growth and success. Our belief in what lies ahead for this team is unwavering and we are eager to see it unfold.”
The October 2013 death of Oilers/Titans founder Bud Adams left his daughters — Adams Strunk and Adams Smith — with one-third shares of the Titans. This recent development will allow the team to be in compliance with the NFL rule that mandates a franchise have one primary decision-maker for league-related matters.
So Roger can fine teams w/o a controlling owner, yet Bud died 7 years ago?
If only you read the links. It’s a new rule.
Buh Buh Buh Bump !!
Uncle Fester still on the payroll?
This is an outrageously stupid rule. So what, the Titans don’t have a controlling owner. Neither do the Packers. They have a team president, who serves at the will of the shareholders (at least in theory). That should be enough to satisfy Mike Brown and any other owner who thinks that this is any of their business.
Succession takes time to iron out in certain cases. How long do teams have to figure it if/when an owner dies before Goodell comes knocking? Sorry if it’s inconvenient for theothers at the meetings, but it’s a bigger issue than who will support who. The teams have a right to sort who their owner is without outside interference. This isn’t a government organization with community responsibilities where a vacancy is going to hurt people. It’s a business. The only justification for this blatantly stupid and selfish rule is that teams need to vote at owners’ meetings. Team presidents are certainly capable of doing that. I suppose Mike Brown lost out on a rule change and thought that it was due to missing two votes (from the Broncos or Titans) that would have helped-or doesn’t like the prospective new owners of those teams.
In the Broncos’ case, one lawsuit from the aunt of the new pick for ownership is holding up the entire process-that the former owner himself detailed for the committee. What does Goodell think, that they’re just dragging their feet and need a little motivation? They want an owner. They’ve been trying for years. So has Amy Adams Strunk, even though in her case, her competitors had better claims. In any case, the teams were trying their hardest. No fine is going to change any of that.
Is Gomez going to be in charge of scouting?
Are the Packers grandfathered out of that requirement or do they have a ‘controlling owner’?
I guess that would mean that Gomez and Morticia are primary owners, Uncle Fester as CEO, and Wednesday & Pugsley are waiting in the wings.
Upvoted. Well done.
Can the NFL fine Jerry Jones for being TOO controlling???
*snaps fingers*
Maybe the Jets should consider giving ownership control to the Munsters.
