According to Texas police, Earl Thomas was held at gunpoint by his wife in April after she allegedly caught him cheating. Thomas himself was not charged for the incident, but the Ravens are still looking into it and determining whether the matter violated the safety’s contract (via The Baltimore Sun).
Thomas’ deal, which runs through 2022, may give the Ravens an out, and a team official says they’re reading it over carefully. The Ravens inked the multiple-time Pro Bowler to a four-year, $55MM deal just one year ago, but they’re not necessarily happy with the results so far. That same source told The Baltimore Sun that Thomas has, at times, clashed with teammates and failed to learn the team’s defensive schemes. Thomas secured the seventh Pro Bowl selection of his career, but that was aided by his long-standing reputation for on-field excellence.
Thomas, who turned 31 on Thursday, spent nine years in Seattle as one of the very best safeties in the NFL, but his final years with the Seahawks were rocky due to disagreements over his contract . After angling for a trade or a new deal prior to the 2018 campaign, Thomas suffered a broken leg in Week 4 which ended his season early. That injury wiped out his most of his platform year, and may have prevented him from becoming the league’s highest-paid safety.
For now, Thomas is set to count for $15MM against the Ravens’ 2020 salary cap. After that, he carries cap hits of $16MM and $17MM in each of the next two seasons.
Ravens are a shady org. Case of buyers remorse and trying to not pay anything lol
No, just a smart one. They probably have social conduct policies built into contracts, to prevent getting stuck with dumbasses.
Having buyers remorse is something that people go through a lot, not just teams, understanding the contract and finding a way out is something so many people would do if possible, I’m not a fan of the ravens because Ray Lewis is a murderer but this is just a sound move that any human with rationale would take if possible
Social conduct?
K so he cheated on his wife.
Does it warrants NFL punishment? No. She pulled a gun on him. He in no way did anything criminal.
Does it mean they can nullify his contract? Doubt it. If they try to I hope he sues them.
Does it make him a scum bag? Sure.
But wife should take him to court and take half of everything.
If they can legally nullify the contract he signed, how would/should he be able to sue? He’d have basically no legal recourse.
“Ravens are a shady org”.
I don’t recall LeSean McCoy ever playing for Baltimore.
Which other cases did they do that? I’m not a ravens fan but I don’t actually recall them trying to get out of guarantees for social conduct before
Ravens did this before with Ray Rice
This should be good……..
You beat me to it! I legit came here to write exactly that…
im curious what is the violation. unproven cheating allegation? being held at gunpoint? seems all we know for sure is that Thomas was simply defending himself.
Violating social distancing policy….haha
It’s just another example of how much hypocrisy exists in the NFL. I’m not a fan of Thomas or the Ravens but the people creating “social” contracts for others should be the ones under investigation. Let’s find out how many dirty little secrets they are hiding in their closet or attic.
First I would say shame on the NFLPA to allow this in their contract. Second I would say that it is up to the NFL to protect its brand. These guys are employees. Anytime guns and knives are involved a cursory look should be done if allowed by the CBA. I mean if they took every player at his word there would never be a suspension. Third I think we all know that there are more than a few shady owners with some skeletons in their closets.
I would say that hypocrites like Goodell and his pals have actually damaged the NFL brand far more than they have elevated it. These guys make a snake oil salesman look trustworthy. They interfere in areas that have no relevance to football performance and hold themselves above judgement while judging others. It’s a complete travesty.
Yeah, no. Sure, NFL discipline is a vague mess. But you sound like you’re delivering a monologue In a high school drama class. We all have conduct we have to follow at work, the league worries about it’s optics. But you’ll defend Tyreek Hill, who we have audio of threatening a woman.
That’s a pretty ignorant statement to make when you have no idea about me. I would never ever defend Hill or Rice or anyone that conducts themselves like that. I may sound like a monologue but the fact of the matter is that some things are black or white and it’s as simple as that. Ive stated these things should be done if permitted by the CBA. And I’ve also said shame on the NFLPA for allowing this into the CBA if it’s the case. You create rules and policies to help you with your optics. Regardless of the motivation if it’s agreed upon then the league has its rights. Why does any company have social media and conduct policies? Just for the heck of it?
I got the wrong reply. My comment was towards lemon
Who said anything about no discipline? I no I didn’t. I’m sure the other older fans like myself remember a time when the league was run much better than it is now. Back then you had team veterans who looked after discipline issues and kept younger players from hurting the team and their own careers. Back then you didn’t need two faced commissioners threatening league executives with dire consequences if they voiced opposition. Back then you didn’t need investigations into matters unrelated to football. Goodell is narcissist who I’m sure has a grudge file on everybody and an enemies list that would be the envy of J. Edgar Hoover.
My bad
More often than not, they end up on the right side of these. No reason not to do due diligence.
Wonder if Pete C is silently flicking the bird at Thomas now.
You mean flipping the bean?
*flicking the bean
He was not charged for being held at gunpoint?
It said he was in Texas, not California.
What’s the leagues policy for your wife catching you banging side chicks with your brother? That weird to anybody else? I feel like if I was an NFL star I could screw without my bro present
well look where said individual is now. in purgatory.
Agree 100%, was the first thing I thought when I saw this story lol
I feel it would it be my right. Anyone woman who suggested otherwise would be shown the door.
Are you saying you would have group sex with your brother?
It should be noted that the original story was put out there by Mike Preston from an anonymous source in the Ravens org… I’d be surprised if that anonymous source actually exists
This is what happens when you ignore stay at home orders.
Why? Do they want to sign Mrs. Thomas?
She seems pretty good at chasing down balls so why not
Her Pursuit is probably a 99
Higher than Earl’s Play Recognition, unfortunately
