The Chiefs have kicked off extension talks with Patrick Mahomes, according to Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter). There’s little doubt that a deal will ultimately get done and, once finalized, it should position the quarterback as the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Mahomes has two years remaining on his original rookie deal, worth $2.794MM and $24.837MM, respectively. After that, the Chiefs would still have the option of using the franchise tag, but that’s a costly game. Instead, the Chiefs would rather pony up the big bucks to lock down one of the game’s brightest stars for years to come.
Some believe that Texans QB Deshaun Watson will ink an extension before Mahomes signs his own mega-deal. That scenario would suit Mahomes just fine, as Watson would provide a favorable comp that the Chiefs passer would easily top.
For a while, we were hearing that Mahomes’ next deal could break the $40MM per year barrier. But, lately, there’s been talk of Watson striking the $40MM-$42MM/year range, which could set Mahomes up for a truly unprecedented ask of around $50MM per season, on average. That doesn’t mean the Chiefs would give it to him, but it wouldn’t be totally out of the ballpark.
After leading the Chiefs to their first championship in 50 years, Mahomes can safely shoot for the moon. Meanwhile, his reps will be keeping a close eye on Watson’s talks, as well as Dak Prescott‘s negotiations with the Cowboys.
Wouldn’t it be smart to flip him for multiple first round picks including next years #1 pick.
No. I genuinely wouldn’t trade him for 10 first round picks.
Such is the game of football. Once you pay your big time players market resetting money, you have less spending power to keep your team stocked year after year. Therefore, you can’t sustain Superbowl success.
The Patriots are the obvious outlier here, even without making Brady the king of cash for all those years.
All that said though, if any current QB could carry subpar teams to big time success for years to come, it this cat.
The highest Cap% from the Pat’s Broncos Seahawks, Giants, Eagles, Steelers, Packers, and Saints was Tom Brady 12.2% 2018. Most were in the 5-11% of the cap range for the last 15 yrs. According to overthecap.
So… Wentz Goff Wilson they are in the 14-15-16% range most of their contract. If you want to know who will win the SB, kind of a betting tool. Pick someone on a team where the QB is below 12.2%
Tom Bradys cap is 12.2 for 2020.
No. I bet all Chiefs fans are happy you’re not their GM.
Mahomes better than Dak so I’m curious to see if Dak demands more than Mahomes since Dak so insistent he gets NFL highest paid.
Mahomes on 1 leg showed he is better than Dak.
Dak is not terrible. He is not great or elite.
Hes between #10 and #20 depending on the year. Same as Wentz, his forever butt buddy on the rankings lists of QBs.
I would trade him in a heartbeat and sign Cam to 2 or 3 year deal. And have Andy as the insurance policy. Cam will not get a huge deal from anyone. But if you give him the ability to top out at like 25M based on incentives you probably win that deal as a GM depending on the base. And you can take the remaining 15M to address a corner.
$50 million per year average! Incredible amount of money for one player. Statistics have shown that no One player who has taken up more than 14.1% of the total teams payroll has ever won a Super Bowl. Now the Chiefs are going to possibly pay their QB almost 25% of their cap? And that’s assuming that the cap goes up and not down as some are predicting. (Analysts are predicting that if the season in played without fans, the cap could go down as much as $40 million dollars for next season). While MyHomeBoy, is a fantastic, generational player, no one is worth that much percentage of the cap. Well that is if you want to win a Super Bowl he’s not.
“Patrick, why don’t you start. What do you want to get paid”
“Ten thousand…”
“REALLY?!?!?”
“…large semi trucks all filled to bursting with hundred dollar bills.”
Mahomes has said over and over it isn’t all about the $$$. He wants enough left to surround himself with good players. He isnt a ego maniac like Dak or several others who talk about $$$ first.
This isn’t reported enough. It would not shock me to see an unprecedented deal of all guaranteed money on a long term contract. 10 years and 250 million all guaranteed? I think something like this is truly possible in this situation.
that’s true, but when a player takes less than he can get, it lowers the market for other players at that position, tends to upset the NLFPA/agents/players. just saying, i heard that about Mahomes too.
50 Million!!??
That’s crazy talk…..
