The Giants own the No. 4 overall pick, but it’s not a given that they’ll stay there. In a virtual presser with reporters on Friday, GM Dave Gettleman said that a trade is a real possibility.

“It’s something I would very seriously entertain,” said Gettleman (via the team website).
Gettleman’s track record shows that he’s not one to trade back from top picks. But, this year, his stockpile is looking pretty thin. After the No. 4 and No. 36 picks, the Giants next choice doesn’t come until No. 99, a compensatory pick near the back of the third round.
There’s also a pretty compelling case for staying put. The Giants have taken an active interest in this year’s top offensive linemen and they might be in position to take any one they want. If the draft starts with the Bengals taking Joe Burrow at No. 1, the Redskins grabbing Chase Young at No. 2, and the Lions (or perhaps another team) taking a non-OL at No. 3, the Giants would have Jedrick Wills Jr., Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, and Andrew Thomas in front of them. Other teams – like the Jets – would love to be in that position.
“Versatility certainly doesn’t hurt,” said the GM when asked about what he’s looking for in a tackle. “But, it’s a thick group. There are tackles throughout the draft…we call it our vertical. There’s a lot of talent there. Is it helpful if a guy played both [left and right tackle]? Absolutely. Is it fatal if he’s only played one? Certainly not.”
If it’s versatility he’s after, Gettleman might be drawn to Wirfs, a promising talent out of Iowa with the potential to feature at four different spots. Then again, he could be tempted to trade down from No. 4, giving him an opportunity to fill needs including linebacker, defensive end, and safety.
They and the Lions should trade down. Teams needing QBs would (should) pay a king’s ransom for a shot at Herbert or Tua. Knowing the Lions & Giants, though, they’ll give away their picks. I really want the Lions to trade Stafford, get a king’s ransom for him, and snag one of those two at #3. Or keep Stafford one more year and grab Hurts at the top of round 2? Lions’ & Giants’ defenses horrific.
Nobody is going to pay a kings ransom this year given the fact teams were unable to have pro days, bring prospects in for visits, and do their own medical examinations.
Teams this year are gonna hold their picks tight to their chest because of the uncertainty in this year’s draft due to Corona making it impossible to conduct business as usual.
Chargers and Dolphins aren’t trading up to grab Tua or Herbert. They’d trade up if burrow was available at #1 but Bengals seem set on keeping him. Redskins would be dumb to pass over Chase Young.
I’m still hoping beyond hope that the Redskins go QB and the Lions get Young. If the Lions have a shot at him and THEN they trade down, GM Quinn should be investigated.
If the Redskins go QB, they need to fire their entire front office. They drafted a QB in the first round last year (Haskins), just traded for Kyle Allen, and still have Alex Smith on the roster.
Not to mention that they could trade down to any place in the top 10-15 and still get a QB because pretty much any team in football would be interested in trading up to draft Chase Young.
these teams alteady know a lot about these guys. everyone knows what youre getting witn the two of them. its lower QBs that more would have needed that chance.
With all this tua injury stuff coming out nobody is trading up to get him and I don’t think Herbert is a top tier talent teams should trade up for. If Herbert was in the draft two years ago I think rosen still goes over him (I’m aware rosen is near worthless now)
I can see the Chargers making a trade with the Giants to grab their QB of choice and then MIA trading back between 8-12; still grabbing their QB of choice while also adding additional picks.
They really should just trade Saquon to a contender. By the time the Giants are ready to make the playoffs, Saquon will have put if a lot of miles. Why waste him when you can cash in your biggest chip to improve your team quicker?
They have a QB. They have a RB. The draft class is deep at receiver and oline. The Giants are in a pretty good position to trade back to say 7 8 or 9 grab Andrew Thomas or Wills and accumulate extra assets. They can grab Tee Higgins Justin Jefferson or another receiver in the 2nd.
I’d rather get receiver later on. I want defense and Oline
Can you imagine if the 49ers got that pick!???!
As a Giants Fan, given the number of lineman available in this draft, I hope they either draft Simmons or trade down. Unless by a miracle Chase Young is available, I don’t see why they should draft a lineman that high.
Ereck Flowers agrees with you.
So because the giants drafted a tackle in the first round 6 years ago and he was a bust that means the giants should never draft a tackle ever again. Smart logic.
Well they will have no choice but to draft OTs but maybe the #4 spot isn’t the best place for them to do that.
It’s a fair point you make, but it takes two to tango. I’m not sure anyone ponies up fair value to move up on Tua or Hebert. If Tua was clearly good to go, then maybe. The draft is deep at WR, and I’m thinking no one trades up for any of the pass rushers after Young. So if you’re not getting market value, why not stay put and just take the tackle you want?
Doesn’t matter if they pick at 4 , 14 or 24 Gutterman doesn’t have a clue and will pick a bust.
You can expect a handful of teams to pick busts. A worse scenario is picking a player who eventually becomes a perennial pro bowler or HOFer and giving up on him too soon. There are some notable examples of that happening.
Falcons traded a ton of picks for julio a few years ago. And the browns picked litterally all bust…. but then again, its the browns
Why are you so sure that “Gutterman” will blow it? He nailed it with Barkley and Jones.
JUST TRADE DOWN
I would love for the falcons to get this pick and get issah simmons. Simmons reminds me of derwin james. Can rush tackle and play deep. I think derwin catches better but i think Simmons is a little bit faster.
That’s nice, may be the only entertainment they’ll provide all year.
