The Dolphins have contacted teams ahead of them in the draft order about a potential move up the board, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Instead of targeting a quarterback, however, Miami would be looking at an offensive tackle. The Dolphins — who currently hold the fifth overall selection — have spoken with the Lions about acquiring the No. 3 pick, per RapSheet.
The 2020 draft class contains at least four offensive tackle prospects who are expected to come off the board relatively early in the first round. In some order, most observers peg the top-four OTs as Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton.
Given that the Bengals and Redskins are almost assuredly taking Joe Burrow and Chase Young with pick Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, the Dolphins should be able to get one of those four tackles at No. 5 without making a move. But if they have their eye on a specific tackle, a trade up could potentially make sense.
Miami is in need of help at tackle after trading former first-rounder Laremy Tunsil to the Texans last year. The Tunsil deal allowed the Dolphins to acquire a haul of draft capital from Houston, but also left them short at a critical offensive position.
If Miami doesn’t end trade up, or doesn’t take a tackle at No. 5, there are still options for them further down the board. Houston’s Josh Jones, USC’s Austin Jackson, Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland, and Georgia’s Isaiah Wilson are also considered possible first-round selections.
B.S.
Happy smokescreen season everybody
It’s not going to be for a tackle
Smart move! If they can get the Lions to move the pick for a 3rd round pick, then they guarantee one of the 2 QBs without getting into a bidding war. See, there is no way Quinn wants to select at 3 and this would let him off the hook. Is it a chicken move by Quinn? Yes! But I could see him doing it.
How is moving out of 3 a chicken move for Quinn? He should be fired if he doesn’t
its chicken if he does it now and doesn’t wait for the best offers, which should come when it gets down to the wire
They don’t need to trade up, they can easily get Austin Jackson at 18 or 26, and their are plenty of interior guards in later rounds like Lloyd Cushenberry, Netane Muti, and Damien Lewis. They will stay at 5 and take Tua, then at 18 will take Kristian Fulton, and at 26 take Swift
I really hope that the fins waste their 1st round picks (per lots of mocks) on safety and tackle. It’s the most ignorant stance by a novice owner, GM, & HC. “Those aren’t my guys! I need MY guys!”
Wasting their picks would be taking a rb with one of their firsts. Taking a tackle or safety would be a good move
They had 1st round LT and safety on their roster last season, remember?
Ohhhh, so they should have kept tunsil and paid him 20+ million a year during a rebuild…or do you take the absolute steal of picks that Houston gifted them. And if Fitzpatrick wasn’t a cry baby he would still be on the team. Can’t have that cancer around a young team trying to change the culture
The going rate for B+ LT is $20m and Pit stole M Fitz. They went from a good D to a top 5 with 1 trade. Maybe management angered him? I’d be mad going from a winning program like ‘Bama to one that accepts losing. Who wouldn’t?
The coach clearly has no idea of how to evaluate talent & gauge their both current & future contracts with what the market dictates.
So what if that’s the going rate, Miami won that tunsil trade. No one says otherwise. Why would you pay an above average tackle 10% of your cap during a rebuild? The dolphins are better off with the picks than tunsil. Fitz didn’t want to be a dolphin. What were they to do? Keep him and have a pouty punk in the locker room infecting the other players? I’d hardly call it a fleecing when a 1st round pick was involved. Sure fitz went on to be an all pro, he wouldn’t have been that in Miami. At the time, that pick was poised to be in the upper half. Yea, Pittsburg got the better end but it wasn’t a fleecing. You must hate the dolphins for some reason. It was time to tear it down because they have been treading water for 2 years.
*20+ years
Yeah dolphins haven’t won a playoff game since 2000 losing isn’t new to them
Treading water since Dan M retire! I don’t hate the Fins. But to say that they won the LT trade even before they use those draft picks is wrong.
I find it utterly frustrating that all new coaches and GM’s say ‘we need our guys’ rather than look who is on their roster and then developing a scheme using the current talent. That’s my gripe.
No doubt that even w/ M Fitz and LT, they would have been a sub 500 team, but that’s what you get when you roll out Fitzmagic at QB.
Ignoring both trades, they could have easily traded back this offseason w/ the 5th and collect picks while keeping good players.
I’m a Skins fan and hate that they’ll spend #2 on Young. Could be a great one, but they aren’t 1 player away from contending. Rebuilding teams need good young players, and draft picks. Not one or the other. What are the Skins doing helping their QB by going D then sitting until the 3rd round?
How could you possibly hate that they’re picking young. He won’t turn the team around in year 1 but he’ll have have a bigger impact than any non qb you could possibly get in the draft. If the redskins get young this year and trevor next year they have the 2 best building blocks in the nfl that aren’t mahomes or lamar and both would be under the age of 23 and cheap
Young might have that impact. We all have seen top 5 ‘can’t miss picks’ miss or get injured. Both the Cards and Fins were wrong about Rosen. This time every year, all sports sites have articles on biggest bust.
But like my comment about ‘not my guys’ comment about Flores. Same is true Ron R, first comment about Dwayne is ‘not my QB’ w/o even seeing him in practice.
It’s not wrong at all. Whether or not they hit doesn’t negate the fact that they got superior value in the deal. By your logic, a team could trade 10 1st round picks for a kicker and if those picks all bust they win the trade.
Its better to have picks than players? Makes no sense. These ‘Fins staff obviously got Rosen wrong. Is having a bad QB on your roster a good trade?
Ok, clearly you can’t admit when you are wrong. Who was talking about Rosen? Are you just grasping for straws because your logic was flawed? You hate the trade, you are entitled to your opinion however wrong it may be. Remember when Ditka traded an entire draft plus for Ricky Williams? At the time he was ridiculed, and rightfully so. I have no clue who washington took with those picks and it doesn’t matter because of the value of the picks
Redskins didn’t win did they, nope. So neither side came out ahead of the other.
Same w/ the RG trade. In fact, Washington actually ‘won’ that trade. 2 division titles to 0 for the Rams over a 3 year period. One w/ RG and one w/ Cousins.
Having picks doesn’t mean having success. The Jags have 12 picks, including 2 first this year. Do you think they’ll be forecasted to win the AFC S? I don’t. I expect them to be no better than .500.
Wow…just wow. You win. I am at a loss for words
What is ‘winning’ to you? Having picks, division titles, high draft prospects? You haven’t explained what winning is.
To me, division titles and playoffs, hopefully a SB, are the goals. Simple as that. You think draft picks are better than a quality LT, I disagree.
Miami will still be ‘rebuilding’ next offseason with another 1st!!!!! That’s 2 more lost years for this dismal franchise.
You are still wrong, no matter how you want to justify it. Everything should have a price. And the dolphins got an amazing offer for a solid player. It’s not like they traded him for a 7th. The picks they got should be starters day 1. So yea, to me, on a bad team it would be better to have 3 extra starters on cheap rookie contracts than one overpaid above average left tackle
Your words ‘The picks they got should be starters day 1.’ Not guaranteed. That’s whole point to my argument.
They blew their 2nd round pick last year after trading for Rosen & he did nothing. They traded an all pro in M Fitz. Do you still really trust their judgement? That’s a blown 1st and 2nd on rookie contracts. Sorry to be so blunt, but that’s the truth.
No one has any idea how the 3 LT picks will play out. It’s pointless to speculate. But their judgement of ‘high end’ talent isn’t so grand so far.
@JJ. Wasting picks would probably be a better approach for the Dolphins than developing guys and then trading them away just as they’re reaching their peak. They did that with both Ajayi and Drake. As for the “my guys” thing, that rational makes good sense with regards to veteran players but less so with rookies.
What has Ajayi done since 2017? Yes Drake looked very good in Arizona. I blame Adam Gase and Chad O’Shea for not using him properly in Miami. However that is in the past. What happened in in the past doesn’t apply when judging the current coach and staff. I will judge Flores and Grier by what happens in 2020 and beyond.
It must be time for me to take my afternoon nap. I thought the OT in the headline stood for overtime.
So, the Miami Dolphins who outside of the Cincinnati Bengals need a franchise quarterback the most is actually thinking of moving up the board two spots but not to get a quarterback to get an offense of lineman? Yet we wonder why the Miami Dolphins have been so bad for so long. Granted they have other first round picks but by the time those pics come the quarterbacks at the top of their board will be off the board.
You’re assuming that this report has any validity. We’re talking about Ian Rapoport here, not someone respected. It also looks like a smokescreen as echozulu88 said.
At 5pm I’ll be releasing my 75th and final Mock Draft. This will be 7 rounds wtih 10 UDFA picks for each team.
I cannot wait until useless draft grades replace the endless useless mock drafts.
I 2nd that
First Trade is a Zoom Lions get 5 and Williams.
Dolphins get 2nd,3rd and so on. Redskins get Stafford and others. Then Haskins gets Trade to like Chargers for 6 pick and so on.
When did Tua move to OT?
Absurd smoke screen. Only one team (Giants) ahead of them seem to be even considering a OL and there are at least four top flight lineman in this draft. If they gave up assets to move up and draft a tackle, they need to fire their front office.
So stupid. They know, and every other team knows damn well you don’t need to move UP 2 spots to get a top tackle.
Total B.S. Nice try Miami.
Is Miami and the Giants the worst at bluffing? No wonder both of these clubs pick at the top of the draft year after year.
@Yep it is
Only problem is that isn’t true at all.
Dumb. Just stay at 5.
If you really want a tackle you’re going to take thomas or wills or wirf at 5.
Dolphins may be better off going the redskins route.
Redskins take young. Start Haskins. Either haskins is the guy or he sucks and they are in position to take lawrence or fields next year.
Dolphins should take thomas, take Jackson, take swift in the 1st. Start Rosen. He either is the guy or they suck and probably wind up getting #1 overall to grab lawrence or fields next year. Dolphins should build the team in a deep wr and oline draft.
Which smokescreen was worse: Giants talking with Herbert for their pick or Dolphins moving up for a OT?
Why not trade up with the 18th pick? Pick 18 + 39 to Jacksonville for the 9th pick
For all those saying they absolutely aren’t trading up for OL help, remember that’s more than likely what the NYG are looking for at pick #4 and if there is 1 single lineman they covet and the Giants do to, then it certainly makes sense to trade here!
Why would anyone covet an offensive lineman? As a giants fan I’d be thrilled if they drafted Simmons, Jeudy or Lamb instead of a lineman. Plenty of teams have won Super Bowls without high picks playing on their offensive lines.
Not lately. There’s such a focus on pass rushers and blitz these days that a team who wants to go places in the post-season better have a high calibre offensive line. First round picks on offensive linemen turn out 87% starters and a very high share of the all pros. RB, receiver, QB are dicier first round propositions.
Name one
Where’s that Simmons clown?
That makes no sense whatsoever.
That is the fakest thing I’ve ever heard a team say, and it’s not even close. Along with “Cheating gives the game a bad look”- A.J Hinch lol.
If they want a OT take Ezra Cleveland at 26
