The 49ers have agreed to trade All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Colts, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. In this stunner of a deal, the Colts will send their first-round pick (No. 13 overall) to San Francisco and sign Buckner to a newly-minted monster contract.
Buckner’s new pact will pay him $21MM per year and make him the second-highest paid DT in league history. Now, only Aaron Donald ranks higher on the all-time list at the position.
The deal leaves the Niners with a major hole to fill on their world-class defensive front. The deal also gives them additional draft artillery. The 49ers now own two first-round picks (Nos. 13 and 31 overall), which they could quickly parlay into a larger stockpile. As of this writing, they have no picks in Rounds 2, 3, or 4. One of those first-rounders will now likely be traded for better depth in April, Schefter tweets.
Just hours ago, the 49ers struck a deal to keep defensive lineman Arik Armstead in the fold for the long-haul. His five-year deal, potentially worth $85MM, seemed to signal that the Niners would be keeping the band together. Instead, it was one half of a difficult choice the 49ers felt they had to make. With the trade, the Niners will be able to apply their limited cash to other areas and replenish with younger talent in the draft.
The former No. 7 overall pick was exceptional in 2019 and was awarded an All-Pro selection for his performance. The Oregon product tallied 62 tackles, nine for a loss, and 7.5 sacks last year as the 49ers rumbled their way to the Super Bowl. With 28.5 career sacks, he has a proven track record of getting to the quarterback and changing the complexion of any game.
The Colts, meanwhile, entered the offseason with adding pass-rush help high on their to-do list. They were particularly soft on the interior; so the upgrade that Buckner provides cannot be understated.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, things seem to be heating up with Philip Rivers. The Colts just might start free agency with the acquisition of two superstars to address their two biggest areas of need.
Wow
what!!!! why what was the reason for this
Very confusing but the 13th overall choice is juicy
May have been looking at their cap options and when this deal came about just decided to cash in while the fire was hot
yea after i thought about it i see the reason. i would love to see one of the first be use for a WR in a trade. maybe we could get diggs or parker
Why on earth would they keep Armstead over Buckner
This is exactly what I thought. Buckner was the obvious guy to keep of the two.
This just sucks. I get it, makes sense for both teams. Niners can now sign all their free agents on their D alone and still have a great line. Probably use that pick to get another d-lineman. Who knows. But colts are going to be crazy good. Their s is better, they get rivers most likely. Texans get worse. Colts should make the playoffs while Niners will still be good on d. I have a feeling Niners trade their 31st pick now and try to add more picks since they don’t have many after getting Ford and Sanders.
WTF? Buck wasn’t the one who didn’t know how to manage the clock in the super bowl…
cap reason i see and we get a 1st to open so many doors for us. it sucks but i guess they have a plan
I’d you compare contracts out per year, Buckner is getting paid 20MM more. Even if they let Armstead go they didn’t have the cap space to sign Buckner, plus sign other players or draft picks. They didn’t want to as much as they had to.
I guess you could say they saw Deforrest through the trees?
Now, if the Colts get Rivers, they should be the team to beat in that division since the Texans made the mother of bad deals trading Hopkins for Johnson.
What a dumb move. You pay dee Ford who didn’t deserve it yet let Buckner go! So stupid get ready to be back in the basement!
it sucks but open up cap space for other needs and to resign other guys. in the short term it sucks but in the long run may pay off. plus buckner to be fair wasnt the same once airk went off and dee and bosa came. in all fairness i trust the team. i just hate the move
Horrible move
not really short term yes. but in the long run they cant pay everyone and look what bucks just got 21 a year. this save 49ers cap to sign and resign guys. plus 2 first opens doors for trade for players or more picks. team has a plan trust the plan
This now sets up a 49ers with someone like Chicago, Atlanta, or Miami for 2s
I personally think the 49ers might be looking at a stud WR with the 13th pick. Juedy, Lamb, Riggs III??
outside the box idea i wouldnt mind trading the 31st pick for a WR maybe maimi willing to give up parker
Or Diggs from Minnesota???
Honestly should have tried to get Hopkins
The move makes sense, the 9ers can now retain the rest of their pending free agents. Buckner was a top 4 player on the D side but as we saw with Bosa you can find studs who are game ready via the draft. It’s a smart play the Niners will likely use the better 1st round pick to plug the hole left by Buckner then trade the 2nd first rounder or get another Wide Out to make the options even stupider on the o side
I’m not a Colts fan but why trade first round pick if you could of signed Clowney for 20+ and kept your draft pick to help Rivers or another QB you get
Because Buckner is the DT their d desperately needs to dominate, and they can still get Hurts or someone w their 2nd rounder
Can see why It makes sense for both teams.
Colts should keep Jacobs as their starting QB and invest that 25mil they would have spent on Rivers getting in Amari Cooper and also bringing in another defender.
What good is Cooper if no one can get him the ball. “Jacobs” [???] is horrible.
Jacoby auto correct sorry. He’s a decent QB.
Only 27, has a ring, 31:13 TD:INT, 85 passer rating and 60 completion. He would improve a lot with Cooper Hilton Mack Doyle and that O Line.
Plus Those ratings are about on par with Baker Mayfield, Jameis Winston, Nick Foles and Andy Dalton but he throws less INT’s to TD’s then all them.
All those guys are awful.
I watched every colt game. He imploded mid season and was a complete train wreck after. And you’re saying he will improve a lot with …… a guy who already signed elsewhere and the entire same offense intact?
Better get a QB because the current one isn’t it….
Not sure whether I’m more shocked by the trade itself or that not a sniff of this trade was picked up by the usual rumor sources. Is there something in the Bay Area water that makes GMs goofy and want to get rid of Pro Bowlers? Mack has made the Bears defense better and I’m certain Buckner will do the same for the Colts.
They had to do it cause they foolishly traded for ford and payed a ridiculous amount of money for a guy who can’t stay on the field instead of paying Buckner who was already on the team and been healthy all of his career!
