If the Eagles want Malcolm Jenkins to return for a seventh season in Philadelphia, it’ll cost ’em. On Monday, Jenkins told reporters that he is seeking a sizable pay bump on his next contract.
“I won’t be back on the same deal,” Jenkins said, via Zach Berman of The Athletic (on Twitter). “That won’t happen. The market is good for safeties now. I consider myself in the top tier.”
Jenkins, 32, has emerged as a defensive leader and a proven playmaker. The three-time Pro Bowler still has one year to go on his current deal, but he’s been pushing for a raise for a while now. In June, he said that he has “outplayed” his contact. Months later, the veteran is still eyeing a substantial extension.
In 2019, Jenkins tallied 80 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and eight passes defensed, though he finished without an interception for the first time since 2011.
Jenkins is set to enter the final season of his four-year, $35MM deal. That pact calls for a $10.887MM cap hit with $7.6MM in base pay. A new deal could allow the Eagles to reduce the hit in 2020, though they’ll may be wary about giving significant guarantees to a player who will turn 33 before the end of the upcoming campaign.
A “top-tier” deal for Jenkins would equate to a $10MM+ average annual salary.
As an Eagles fan it’s tough to say this, but let him walk. He’s not worth the money he’s asking for
Agree. Put Mills back there so he can stop riding his wheel chair with his rubber ankles.
If Mills is back,he’s a free agent.
Sorry but I say pay him for two or three years.. replace McLeod with Douglas or a draftee .
They need to pay him at least if it’s for two years. He’s an Ironman in a team of wounded, the cap goes up next year and the Eagles have plenty of other holes to fill.
He’s been great for this team since he got here, but you have to let him walk. He’s reaching that point where the production will no longer match the price tag. He’s the 11th highest paid safety in the league right now, which in and of itself is probably generous. While he is above average to good, he’s definitely not “great”, a significant pay bump puts him in top 5-10 territory which he absolutely is not. Eagles have to be very smart with their money this year, which means making hard decisions. Two of their easiest decisions should be letting both Peters and Jenkins walk. You can’t afford to be sentimental anymore, not if you plan to compete
+1
You’ve just been eliminated from the playoffs and all you can think of is how much more $ you can extort from management…pretty pathetic.
what ever happened to a contract being a binding agreement…outplaying a contract is b.s. teams should start asking for money back when a player doesnt live up t ok his contract he signed!
They do, it’s called renegotiating
NFL Players have much less leverage than other pros and their careers are generally shorter so they often sign Omer friendly contracts and renegotiate if they outplay them. Remember most of these contracts are at best partially guaranteed by ownership.
if he’ll take a two year extention (as in through 2022) at a few million more per they need to do it. Alshon doesnt help the cap space, but Malcolm’s steady presence and versatility makes him pretty valuable.
See ya don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out the door.
As a Cowboys fan, I say this guy is a stud. I hope they let him walk.
Good but not great player on a decent salary considering his age, I hope they don’t cave in and extend him to a contract he won’t live up to as he ages.
Thank you for your time in Philly, but it’s time to move on…
Idk about just letting him go.That back 7 needs some work as it was.McLeod is a free agent,as well as Darby and Mills on the outside.Thats pretty much the top 4,when healthy. Its gonna be interesting to see what Howie’s gonna do back there this offseason,he’s had his problems putting that unit together.
