The Chiefs are expected to finalize a new contract with star QB Patrick Mahomes this offseason, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network (video link). The two sides have not done much work on an extension yet, but the team does expect a new deal to be in place in the coming months.
Rapoport says Kansas City wants to wait until after the first wave of free agency in March, at which point there will hopefully be a new CBA in place. Before giving Mahomes an inevitably record-breaking contract, the Chiefs want to know exactly how that contract will fit into the league’s collective bargaining framework.
We heard last January that KC was planning to extend Mahomes after the 2019 season, and obviously Mahomes has done nothing this season to suggest he is not worthy of a massive new contract. On the contrary, the third-year signal-caller turned in a second straight stellar campaign despite dealing with a sprained ankle and a scary-looking dislocated kneecap. He missed two games this season, but he still threw for 26 TDs against just five interceptions and lifted his team to a first-round bye.
Given his youth and talent, Mahomes may well land the league’s first $200MM deal. The Falcons’ Matt Ryan is the current standard-bearer in terms of total contract value ($150MM) and fully-guaranteed money ($94.5MM), and it seems likely that Mahomes will easily eclipse both of those figures.
The 24-year-old will lead the Chiefs against the Texans in next week’s divisional round.
Love Mahomes but as soon as they do this, there goes all the talent around him.
Not to mention that Andy Reid is probably in the twilight of his career.
If Chiefs lose to the Texans then Reid can leave asap… I … My eyes wont water
Yep just like when my ravens sign LJ lol. Unless they both do what Brady did to keep there teams together.
Mahomes gf never going to see the $$ that Brady’s wife has so no reason to take a team friendly deal
Well, the reason would be “increased chances of a championship.” Depends on whether Mahomes wants to win or set salary records.
Oh please do. They already have a bad and this will handicap them for years
I think you are wrong. I don’t think that Mahomes is worried about becoming the highest paid player/QB in the NFL. I think that instead of demanding $35M/year or more, he will be more like Tom Brady and be happy with $24–$26M/year. We all know that Brady would of gotten A LOT more money per year if he wanted it, but he was more worried about making sure his team had enough salary cap space to get the players that they needed to have a great team. I think that’s how Mahomes will be. He is making so much money already with ads ect….. He will want the Chiefs to keep/get the players they need to be Super Bowl contenders every year!! That’s my prediction.
Chiefs wouldn’t even offer him that low, his agent would laugh at it. NFLPA would be upset. No way he’s not the highest paid QB in NFL history with this deal.
People thought Russell Wilson would accept lower salary, too.
…and then Russ saw the Legion of Boom leave for SF, Bal, etc.
Now instead of a Super Bowl favorite, they have to pin their hopes on the wild card.
Lessons learned…
I think your right on with that prediction! Patrick Mahomes is more than worth it, but by no way it’s all about the money. Just watching him in action should be proof enough.
I love how people forget that Brady wasn’t always on team friendly deals. He only did it after he realized they couldn’t keep the talent around him. He also had well over 100 million in career earnings before he took the discounts. But he’s such a team first guy.
Not to mention the fact that Brady had the benefit of being able to take less money since his wife was/is making just as much money as him. Brady himself said that he took less money because Gisele earned as much as she did.
I’d put less on the wife income and more on the stocks and other Kraft benefits offered. which technically shouldn’t be allowed but who knows
This should be easy. Dude is a stud. High character. Deserves the highest contract ever. The numbers just need to be hammered out. Sucks.

10 years $250 million with $200 million guaranteed, who says no? Way more guaranteed money than anyone has gotten before but mahomes is young, plus a $25 million AAV is low enough for a QB that you can still afford to pay the rest of the team.
Probably mahomes. With the way the cap goes up and QB salaries keep exploding, he could probably get more than $250m if he did two 5-year deals rather than one 10-year deal
10 years? Worse contract of all time! The cap rises 10% each year & by pushing it out 10 years, he’d end up the lowest paid QB in 5-6 years.
Mahomes says no. Any extension that does not make him the highest paid QB would be a non starter. He is young. He is a stud. He is the MVP. Why would he take some low AAV discount
Mahomes says no. He will make double that over the next 10 years.
