It sounds like the Redskins already have their eye on a potential head coach. SiriusXM’s Alex Marvez reports (via Twitter) that Marvin Lewis is a strong contender for the Redskins’ coaching vacancy. In fact, Marvez says Lewis may have already interviewed with owner Dan Snyder in the Bahamas.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com echoes that report, and the reporter also provides context to Washington’s interest. Lewis previously served as the team’s defensive coordinator and assistant head coach under Steve Spurrier.
That stint in Washington preceded the coach’s 16-year stint as the Bengals head coach. While Lewis didn’t help the Bengals achieve any playoff success (0-7 in seven appearances), he did finish his Cincy career with a 131-122 record, including 10 seasons with at least eight victories.
While the Bengals struggled between 2016 and 2018 (20-28), it was still a bit of a surprise when the organization moved on from Lewis last year. We heard that the 61-year-old would be well-positioned to secure another head coaching gig this offseason. However, Lewis didn’t take any interviews last offseason, and he later revealed that he didn’t expect to coach again. He joined his friends Ray Anderson and Herm Edwards at Arizona State University as a special advisor back in May, and it’s believed that Lewis would consider an NFL gig if the right opportunity presented itself.
In recent years, the trend has been for teams to hire younger, more offensive-minded coaches. Some front office insiders believe Lewis will be considered one of the most accomplished coaches available, so he may have options beyond Washington.
We heard yesterday that Snyder has been working on the team’s head coaching situation for several weeks. Former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera was mentioned as a potential name to monitor. Interim HC Bill Callahan would like to be considered, but it’s unlikely given Washington’s post-Jay Gruden performance that the team will go with the 63-year-old coach as its next full-time leader. The Redskins moved on from Gruden back in October, with the team going 0-5 before the move and 3-7 after the move.
As a Giants fan, I certainly hope so!
Lol, good luck Redskins fans. Just another empty suit for a head coach.
Lol this would be a comical signing. They should fire their GM for even considering this
Snyder is making the call.
So if they interview Lewis are they required to interview anyone else since this satisfies the Rooney rule?
This is the reason why the Redskins go nowhere. They are seriously considering hiring a guy with no playoff wins and did nothing for the Bengals for over a decade plus. Not only that but the NFL is going to be a different beast in terms of how offense after the whole Lamar Jackson/ Sean McVay revolution in how the game is played and he does not bring on experience in that creativity to the table. The change with the organization has to start with the very top otherwise the Skin’s will never be successful until otherwise.
So the Redskins are going to fire Daniel Snyder? Long overdue.
I agree with you somewhat given Marvin Lewis and the teams he had in the mid to thousands but never won a playoff game. Here is where I kind of disagree the style of the game is not going to change all that much just because of Lamar Jackson. People thought the same thing in the early 1990s with Randall Cunningham and guess why the game did not change, everyone thought the same thing in the early 2000’s with Michael Vick and guess what the game did not change. The bottom line is most teams will still cover that 6 foot five and 235 pound pocket quarterback that can just drop back and throw that will never change. Dwayne Haskins is a mobile quarterback but he will never be Lamar Jackson. As far as Jackson is concerned he is 0-1 in the playoffs with a QBR of 72 if that happens again trust me people will start to question the idea of a gadget quarterback. I believe Jackson is stupidly talented but has a short shelflife I would rather have a guy like Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning for about 15 years then a guy like Jackson for half of that time. Soon people will figure him out he is going to get hit and he is going to get hurt.
NFL owners shuffle the deck & always hire retreads. Bill Bellicheck failed msny times but he was still young. Hiring a 60+ HC simply because he knows the game is ridiculous. There are plenty younger guys who deserve a shot.
Speaking of fail, you should try due diligence before opening the pie hole. Belichick (spell much?) “failed” as HC of Cleveland Browns, which makes him only human.
Not “many times”, as you allege. Smh
Followed up by the next article saying it’s Ron Rivera. Are they truly interested or just satisfying the Rooney Rule?
I’m guessing they’re interested in more than one candidate.
Rooney is all this is. They want Rivera.
Rivera is a minority and satisfies the rule by himself, no need to interview Marvin.
As every says please do.
Of course they won’t announce this, but I think how they see themselves determines if this is “meh” or stupid. If they legit believe they can win, this is stupid. Lewis has never been a good HC. If they’re just looking for a veteran HC to steer the ship through a rebuild, eat a bunch of losses, and then make way for a better hire when it turns a corner, Lewis is fine.
