Jaguars defensive tackle Marcell Dareus was cited for possession of marijuana on Wednesday, reports Justin Barney of News4Jax.com (via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com).
“The Jaguars are aware of a citation involving DT Marcell Dareus,” the team said (via David Smith). “The matter will be handled internally.”
According to the report, Dareus was pulled over around 2 a.m. for speeding, at which time the officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. Two joints and a grinder were found following a search, and none of the passengers would say who the marijuana belonged to. Dareus was ultimately slapped with “a citation for misdemeanor marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia,” and he also receiver a warning for speeding.
Dareus will naturally be investigated by the NFL, and his past run-in’s with the league will likely work against him. The 29-year-old was hit with a one-game ban in 2015 after violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was later handed a four-game suspension in 2016 for the same offense.
The two-time Pro Bowler spent the first six-plus seasons of his career with the Bills before being traded to Jacksonville in 2017. He started all 15 of his appearances last season, compiling 32 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble. He has six tackles and 0.5 sacks in three starts this year.
Boy I’m sure glad they caught these dangerous criminals and got those two joints off the street! This shouldn’t even be a crime anymore.
But it is, should we decriminalize everything because people can’t stay clean for the sake of a well paid job?
No, we should decriminalize it because it’s absurd for it to be illegal, especially when, say, alcohol is legal. FAR more damage to oneself and others by using alcohol. Also interesting that he got citations for the dope and only got a warning for speeding.
Right on!
And if he had been drinking it would have been worse but he still would be in trouble.
You give a valid point. Although it is ridiculous for marijuana to be illegal, an employer has a right to have rules and if you break a rule, gotta deal with it. Just got a layoff the reefer for a couple years and make some money and then you can smoke all the reefer you want
Completely agree with you; rules are rules, even if they ARE stupid rules. Also agree that these guys are fortunate to be in a position to do exactly as you say – take a few years, make your fortune then do what you want forever.
I’m grateful you realized that I was commenting on the absurdity of the rule, not on the idea of following the rules, which I always feel you agree to do when you sign the contract.

And its going to cost him at least 4 game checks.
I bought an eighth from a store yesterday for 27 dollars. Weed still being illegal in some states and at the federal level is the most archaic law on the books. If he was pulled over with a trunk full of Jack Daniels and a prescription bottle of fentanyl he wouldn’t have been in any trouble, but 2 doobies and he will probably end up losing millions in game checks and have to go to court. BS
Isn’t weed legal in Florida?
Medicinal is but not recreational.
The fact that the guy was out at 2am partying doesn’t disturb you guys? He’s a pro athlete getting paid millions of dollars. Along with that comes an implied obligation to be responsible and take care of your body to the best of your ability so that you can perform on the field at the highest level possible. Some people love making the police the villain. They were not looking for a little weed. They stopped him for speeding at 2 am. Is it their fault he was stupid enough to have it on the car? Can’t wait for the people to play the race card on this one.
Usually the person that brings up the use of race card, unprovoked is usually the race baiter. Sounded like a big ole party driving down the street, right? Also, he didn’t get cited for “being impaired” did he? Unless, the officer didn’t do his job, and they omitted it from this article. It’s 2019! People enjoy themselves on days off.
Troll, Name one thing I said that was inaccurate.
You assumed he was out “partying”. Where’s driving while impaired charge? How do you know where he was coming from? Again, it’s all about race, which NOT one person has brought up, except you.
Sorry, for not responding earlier, but I don’t spend my life on this site. Yes, I assumed he was out partying because he’s been popped for violating the drug policy before and was sited for having drugs and drug paraphernalia in his possession. I guess that was a huge jump on my part.
Please read better. I never said it was about race.
I agree.
An adult out at 2am, what a concept
Once again an adult pro athlete that supposed to be taking care of his body and being responsible with an obligation to his owners and his teammates. What part of that is so hard for people to understand?
Obviously you’re the one that doesn’t understand. BTW… I pointed out your inaccuracies and you disappeared, only to post the same nonsense on another comment.
Man….I am just SHOCKED to read this…..
(In other news, water is still wet….for now)
i heard he got the dope from a swayze express that came over the canadian border
