Dwayne Haskins finally made his highly anticipated NFL debut earlier Sunday, coming on in relief of Case Keenum in the Redskins’ loss to the Giants. Even though head coach Jay Gruden made the decision to bench Keenum, somehow the quarterback situation has gotten even less clear heading into Week 5.
Speaking after the game, Gruden said that Keenum’s foot injury factored into his decision to pull him, according to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com. Gruden also declined to name a starter for next week’s game against the Patriots. While that’s not too unusual, there are huge implications here. Reports of dysfunction in the building have been rapidly leaking out, as Gruden’s relationship with owner Dan Snyder and team president Bruce Allen has apparently deteriorated.
We also just heard that Gruden and the coaching staff thought Haskins would be better off redshirting his entire rookie year, so it sure sounds like his hand was forced by management. It was reported before the game that Haskins would relieve Keenum if he struggled, so it wasn’t a huge surprise. Haskins struggled mightily in his debut and threw three interceptions, and Gruden didn’t sound too enthusiastic about having to play him.
As such, it seems like there’s a real chance the team could go back to Keenum, especially with Gruden saying the foot injury played a part. However, Gruden might not get the chance to make the call. Just yesterday it was reported that Gruden could be fired by the team if they lost to the Giants, which they obviously did in ugly fashion.
There’s also a possibility that Colt McCoy could take over under center after Haskins’ disastrous performance. McCoy was listed as the team’s starter earlier in the offseason, but his recovery from a 2018 leg injury kept him sidelined until just recently. McCoy returned to practice this past week, and could get a crack at the starting job given the state of his competition. If Gruden is going to be fired, then it would likely happen tomorrow.
Until the redskins fire their owner….not damn thing will ever change. (I get you can’t fire Snyder, but you get the point.)
The NBA did it
That was for cause. It was not for poor operation of the team. If recordings come out of Snyder making blatantly racist statements the way Sterling did, the NFL will force a sale.
Actually the old AFL forced to separate owners to sell their teams in the ‘best interest of the sport’. As well as MLB who also have forced owners to sell, including Marge Shott.
As a METS fan I would MLB to force the Wilpons to sell, but that’s for another thread.
I’m a Mets and Knicks fan who has been hoping for ownership changes for a while now.
I completely understand.- Bengals Fans
The stories that are starting be told about Haskins are painting him to be like Jamarcus Russell
Swap Dwayne Haskins and Trent Williams for Melvin Gordan, Tyrod Taylor, 2nd Round pick and a 4th round pick.
The redskins get 2 QBs to battle it out to start, they get a really really good running back in Gordan, and they get a future pick. If they want they can tank this year or next for their future QB.
Gordan could be used to replace Adrian Peterson who is old or they could trade Peterson to a competing team for another pick.
The Chargers get a young QB with good potential who can learn from Phillip Rivers and eventually succeed him. Ekeler and Jackson having been going more than alright at RB so that’s not a huge worry. They get a good tackle in Trent Williams and when Okung returns they have a really good line.
Chargers get a better line and future replacement for Rivers. The Redskins get an upgrade over the ageing Peterson, they get a decent QB replacement and a pick for Haskins, and they get rid of Williams.
lmao
Cowboys then Swap a third round pick for Peterson.
Peterson gets to return home to Texas
All of a sudden the Redskins got Taylor, Gordan and 2nd a 3rd and a 4th round pick. They upgrade at RB and get to have another go at getting a QB next year plus they get a punch of decent picks. The Chargers get a future after Rivers, and a better line. The Cowboys get another attacking option to make a string push this year.
A 3rd for Peterson at this point is terrible. A solid young player for a RB who could retire at the end of the year makes no sense. 3rd round picks have value. Hell, any pick is not something I would trade for Peterson. He’s done.
I could see a 7th for AD but that’s about it. He could still put up some numbers if he ran behind Dallas Oline. Not a single RB in the league could do squat behind the skins line esp with Trent gone.
Chargers would likely laugh and hang up
…then the Redskins trade those 3 picks, case Keenum, and Jordan Reed to the Chiefs for mahomes, tyreek, and kelce.
…then they trade all the picks of their next 3 drafts to the Bears for their starting 11 on defense.
…SUPER BOWL!!!
I say go fet mahomes from kc, trade for zeke, go get OBJ and aaron donald and this team would be solid.
Dysfunctional team, owner, GM, Coaches, Did Haskins look ready to anyone? One long, ugly year. Fan base going to hell and a hand basket, How much more can one owner screw up an organization…. totally sick of this team!
The good news is that Gruden won’t be managing the Nationals against the Brewers on Tuesday.
I knew they were in trouble with Haskins when last week they showed him on the sideline and he want even engaged in the game or the coaches. He was walking around eating sunflower seeds while Keenum was on the bench going over the tablet with the QB coach. Any rookie QB should be engaged and looking to learn as much as possible from the starter as well as stay ready to go into the game. He looked like he was pouting on the sidelines cause he wasn’t playing.
Good observation but I’m a bit surprised Goodell doesn’t have a squad of “sunflower seed” police.
Haskins looked like about half the quarterbacks in the league, i.e., inexplicably inaccurate and when put under pressure he throws the ball off his back foot into coverage.
