The Patriots are releasing newly acquired center Russell Bodine, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe (on Twitter). To take his place, they’ll re-sign center/guard James Ferentz.
The Pats shipped a sixth-round pick to the Bills for Bodine on August 30th. Apparently, in the last week or so, Bodine didn’t show enough to stick on the roster.
The Patriots initially carried Bodine on the 53-man squad, but he’s out of a job with just two days to go before the first Sunday of the NFL calendar. Ferentz, meanwhile, is back in the mix to help on the interior line, along with fellow new OLs Korey Cunningham and Jermaine Eluemunor.
Waste of a pick?
Yup
Beanne was pretty savvy getting a puck for a guy being cut from the team anyways
Getting a pick, not puck, my mistake
This is why people need to calm down when the Pats make a move like this assuming they are getting the next pro bowler.
For every Randy Moss move the Pats do, they also flame out on guys like Ocho Cinco, mike Gillissee and Russell Bodine.
The Pats make bad moves like everyone else. They basically threw away a 2nd rounder when they traded Dawson. But when the Jets throw away a 3rd rounder people go nuts.
And they still win Super Bowls….
They’re not afraid to take a chance. The difference is that most teams would hold onto the player for too long because they’re afraid of looking bad. The Patriots don’t care what people think if they swing and miss. It happens. They win some trades and they lose some trades. Winning games matters more than winning trades.
They’ll probably sign him back after week 1. Cut him now so his contract isn’t guaranteed right?
Since the trade in camp he has not shown the same level of talent/skills the Pats saw on video and from matchups from years past. Nor does he have the athleticism and versatility to lineup at different spots on the o-line. They will be fine without him and the 6th round pick.
