A pair of blockbuster trades were consummated on cutdown day, one of which featured Jadeveon Clowney heading to Seattle. More details on that trade and how it went down may come out over the next couple of days, but here’s a roundup of what we have so far:
- Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that the Texans paid Clowney a $7MM signing bonus while the Seahawks will pick up the remaining $9MM of Clowney’s 2019 salary (Twitter link). The trade was already viewed as a big win for Seattle, and this tips the scales even further in the Seahawks’ favor. Critically, the Seahawks have promised Clowney that they will not put the franchise tag on him in 2020.
- At one point, the Dolphins believed they were the frontrunners for Clowney, and when the trade to Seattle was first reported, we heard that Miami and the Texans were indeed headed towards a deal before Clowney made it clear that he would refuse to play for the Fins. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald confirms that report and says the Dolphins and Texans were on their way to a trade that would have sent Clowney and two very high picks to Miami in exchange for LT Laremy Tunsil, but Clowney’s aversion to South Beach scuttled that (Twitter link). Of course, the two sides did agree to a Tunsil trade, it just didn’t include Clowney.
- Jackson adds in a separate tweet that the Dolphins only really considered Clowney a bonus, not necessarily a long-term piece. The team really wanted premium draft capital in a Tunsil trade, and that’s ultimately what Miami got.
- Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network says that, when Clowney did not report to the Texans after their third preseason game, as Houston had expected, the team’s leverage was reduced even further. And when Clowney suggested that he was willing to miss regular season action if he was not traded, the Texans had to act to make the best deal they could (Twitter link).
- Clowney will re-hire longtime agent Bus Cook, whom he had fired less than a week ago, as Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets.
I suggest the Texans hire a competent General Manager before they trade Watson for a 4th and a conditional 6th rounder.
What did they do wrong?
The Texans made the best trade possible as this clown was a cancer to their entire team .. Plus, it is just a matter of time before Seattle is in the same position !!
Lol you must not now how to read. They promise they won’t put the tag on him
1. First of all, the Texans annoyed Clowney by franchise tagging him as LB instead of DE so they assigned him with less money even though he played more as DE than LB last year.
2. Most of all, the Texans failed to agree to contact extension with Clowney before July 15 franchise deadline. If the Texans weren’t going to sign him to Mack or Donald money, then they should’ve traded him before July 15 so they could have obtained much better draft picks than just a 3rd round pick and couple of backups. For example, Seattle dealt Frank Clark to KC (a similar level player imo) who had same contract status as Clowney before July 15 and Seattle got 1st, 2nd, and swap of 3rd picks this year.
This is starting to sound somewhat similar to when the Steelers traded Antonio Brown. Both guys slowly forced the hands of their employers to make a deal, although Brown was much more obvious and underhanded in using social media to get it done. The Steelers trade seemed like they got ripped off at the time, but now not so much; maybe down the road we end up realizing that the Texans also got what they could at the time.
No, I don’t really think many competent minded people thought the Steelers were ripped up.
Like I said before, this is addition by subtraction. Anything they got for a cancerous player is a win. Plus they just traded major draft capital for Tunsil so it was a good thing. However, I agree they need a GM. I hope O’Brien isn’t the guy making these picks as I can’t remember a Coach/GM situation ever panning out, but I could be wrong. I thought I was wrong once, But I was mistaken.
Texans got hosed, my goodness
The Texans are clueless. All they gave up for Tunsil and then giving away Clooney? What a joke. I like the Texans but this series of moves is going to kill them long term. For what, to win the division and get smoked in the playoffs? Wow what a head scratcher day.
Why would the Dolphins be anywhere near this? He’s going to hit the market next year anyway? Why get rid of pieces for a rental that will probably leave after you fail this season. Confused
