The Colts have agreed to sign Brian Hoyer to a three-year, $12MM deal, as Adam Caplan of SiriusXM tweets. The pact includes $9MM in guarantees, giving the veteran a whole lot of fiscal security.
For the Colts, the deal gives them additional experience under center in the wake of Andrew Luck‘s retirement. Jacoby Brissett – another ex-Patriot – will remain as the team’s QB1. Hoyer will be the top clipboard holder, so it remains to be seen what they’ll do with Chad Kelly when he returns from his two-game ban.
The Patriots wanted Hoyer back, but as Jeff Howe of The Athletic (on Twitter) notes, they were only willing to do a one-year deal. The Colts won out, in part because they were willing to sign the soon-to-be 34-year-old to a three-year contract.
Hoyer, a veteran journeyman, has started games for the Browns, Texans, Bears, and 49ers and has made other stops around the league. All in all, he’s got 37 starts to his credit across ten seasons.
Hey not bad for a 34 yr old former undrafted FA who had one of the worst QB playoff starts in NFL history.

This is a win/win for both the Colts and Hoyer. I was actually surprised when the Patriots dropped him. I guess they thought he would be there for a resign but sometimes those gambles backfire. This though gives BB a chance to really prove what a genius he is by signing Nathan Peterman and turning him into a Hall of Famer.
That seems kinda desperate. Who was even signing him to a 2 year deal? 4M/yr for your backup QB isnt terrible tho.
….It’s called enormous Cap Space by the Colts
It’s only a matter of time before he’s their starting QB.
Colts only play one of Hoyer’s six former teams but they should give him a start against Houston.
Why?
Great deal for Hoyer. $9M guaranteed when he was making a lot less. If he’s there all 3 years he ends up with $12M and he would be 37. Probably could do that until he’s 30.
Make that 40.
If you’re Brian Hoyer, you are just looking for a job & paycheck for as long as possible. You’re not expecting to be a starting QB anymore.
Hoyer has an excellent work ethic and always prepares as if he could be called upon to start. That’s why Belichick wanted to get him back. In Indy he has a realistic chance to get a snap count around 500 like Mullens did with the 49ers last season.
