The Dolphins believe they are the leaders to land Texans star Jadeveon Clowney, as Armando Salguero and Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald write. We learned earlier today that Clowney has met in person with Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and other members of Miami’s brass, and the team thinks that meeting helped sway Clowney towards South Beach.
As Clowney has not yet signed his franchise tender, he does have some say as to where he gets traded. Sources suggest that Clowney was not initially in love with the idea of coming to the Dolphins, and indeed, today’s report suggested that Clowney prefers the Seahawks or Eagles.
However, the Dolphins believe Clowney is now on board if they can swing a deal with the Texans. Salguero and Beasley say that a potential trade between the two teams would not include a first-round pick heading to Houston, though Miami is also refusing to give up offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil.
In addition to offensive line help, the Texans are in need of a running back, and the Dolphins could package Kenyan Drake or Kalen Ballage along with some draft capital to make a trade work.
Continue losing Miami! You’re not a DE away from winning.
Assuming it’s low draft capital, combining that with Drake or Ballage is a good trade for Miami regardless how many players they are away from winning.
It really isn’t. Clowney is a free agent again at the end of 2019.
I believe Drake is in a contract year too.
Contract year player makes a lot more sense for a contending Texans team than it does to a likely at least 2 years away dolphins team
They wouldn’t even be talking if an agreement wasn’t in place for Clowney to sign an extension.
Favorites? Or only team interested. Guess it’s the same.
Good to know that the Dolphins continue to not have a clue about how to build a franchise.
How many Super Bowls have the Texans won with Clowney? How many did Miami win with Ndamukong Suh? How many of the highest paid defensive linemen has New England had during their close to twenty year run? This potential move has Stephen Ross’s fingerprints all over it. We easily have the worst owner in the NFL.
beg your pardon, but I’m a Redskins fan and we have Danny calling the shots.
Patriots spend a good amount on corners, yet the Eagles won with a average set of corners 2 years ago,but had big money tied up in Fletcher Cox.Packers winning in the 90s definitely had something to do with adding Reggie White,Giants in 08 definitely had some help from Michael Strahan.Ravens championship defenses definitely got help from a pass rusher like Terrell Suggs, same thing in Denver with Von Miller. And Suh did move on to help the Rams make it to the super bowl.
I’m not trying to argue the Dolphins should or shouldn’t do anything, but pretty much every super bowl winner, and loser has a pretty good pass rush. And most teams don’t have the advantage of having a Tom Brady being paid below their market value.
Suh was on the Rams and helped that defense to a super bowl appearance alongside Donald. He wasn’t used correctly to his strengths in Miami
Correct Suh was embarrassingly misused and mishandled during his time in Miami.
He was overused, had to consistently face nonstop doubles, wasn’t mixed along the line, and ultimately it led to Miami getting what they deserved..
Also, to the point above, it takes a good DEFENSE to make it to the Super Bowl and/or win a Super Bowl, not solely just a good pass rusher..There are countless either HOF or future HOF pass rushers who don’t have a ring..Immediately you have guys that come to mind like Elvin Bethea, Chris Doleman, Andre Tippett, Merlin Olsen, Alan Page, Deacon Jones, Lee Roy Selmon, Carl Eller, Derrick Thomas, Bruce Smith, Julius Peppers, Miami’s own Cameron Wake, Elvis Dumerville, Geno Atkins, Robert Quinn, Jason Babin, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Mario Williams, Calais Cambell, Justin Smith, JJ Watt, Khalil Mack, Aaron Donald, and who could forget living legends like John Randle & Jared Allen
My point was that you can’t discredit any addition of a good to great pass rusher.
Saying a team has no clue what they’re doing, when they’re trying to acquire a proven player like Clowney is crazy to me.Dolphins shouldn’t overpay to get him,but he could definitely help them out as they build their roster.
It would be hilarious if Vegas downgrades their super bowl odds after acquiring Clowney.
Haha for real
I don’t see the problem. He’s not going to win them any games. He’s 26, so his contract will cover his prime years. Dolphins can still tank for the QB if/when Rosen fails. The current trend is to have a good rookie contract qb so you can overpay for other talent. Eagles, Rams, Chiefs, and bears for example. Granted you usually draft the qb first, but why wait if you have the plan?
