The third quarterback is off the board. The Redskins have selected Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the No. 15 pick.
We heard yesterday that the organization was split on not only which quarterback to select, but whether they should be taking a signal-caller at all. Team president Bruce Allen and owner Dan Snyder were reportedly fixated on Haskins, while others were focused on Duke quarterback Daniel Jones. After the Giants ended up selecting Jones, Washington’s decision was seemingly made for them.
There was some hype that Haskins could end up being selected in the top-six, as both the Raiders and Giants had been connected to the quarterback. Considering the uncertainty, there were also some whispers that the Redskins would look to leapfrog both Oakland and New York, with the Jets’ third-overall pick seeming like a natural match.
The hype for Haskins is justified after a breakout campaign in 2018. The quarterback completed 70-percent of his passes for 4,831 yards, an eye-popping 50 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions. His lack of experience was seen as a con among some pundits, although scouts universally touted his size and arm strength.
With Alex Smith shelved indefinitely, the Redskins will have an intriguing quarterback battle this offseason. The organization acquired Case Keenum earlier this offseason, while backup Colt McCoy re-signed with the team.
Giants jumped the gun bad.
This guy aint much better. Big bust potential looks like jameis winston. Flat foot throws interception machine.
I agree but they could have easily got Jones at 17. Took him way too early
Kenley you always state your opinion as fact but you know nothing. How do you know it was too early? Were you in every teams draft room? There were many teams linked to QBs before 17 and several teams with ammo to move up before 17 to get a QB. If you knew anything you’d know you don’t mess around when it comes to QB if you like a guy you take him when you have a chance.
To say they could have easily got him at 17 is ridiculous you have no clue
Its not at all if you actually have some common sense. If you want to pretend Daniel Jones was ranked far ahead of Haskins and Lock on every teams draft board be my guest. Fact is Miami, Denver, Cincinnati all passed on Haskins and lock. the amount of teams interested in a QB were vastly overblown. Their GM literally came out and said they wont force a QB pick and thats exactly what they did.
you think it may be called STRATEGY? Why does the GM owe us any explanation as to his intentions in the draft when he’s in competition with 31 other teams.
My thoughts exactly…..there was no guarantee that Jones was going to be there especially with QB hungry teams like Washington, Denver, and Miami picking prior to 17. And, its possible that in the circles that fans don’t get a peek into, that the Giants brass knew that Snyder of the Redskins was in love with this guy, and if there’s anything the Redskins do in football, its follow Snyders orders regardless of how that affects their football team…look at the kings ransom they paid for RGIII and how did that turn out for them…..Live with it Giants fans….maybe these guys do know what they’re doing!
Haskins threw 50 touchdown passes and 8 interceptions in 2018 with a completion percentage of over 70% and a rating of 173 in what is a fairly robust conference. Yes, Haskins could turn out to be Jameis Winston but he could also turn out to be Terry Bradshaw.
True, but with 14 whole games of experience and with a loaded OS team in front of him, would you gamble your money on this kid…and I say kid…especially with his post pick comments which makes him sound a little bit like a typical athlete coming out of college who can’t spell cat if you gave him the C and T! Of course, we’re concerned about his football IQ which would have been much more apparent in his second year of starting when teams had the chance to consider him a weapon and scene against stopping him….but that we’ll never know because he did what all these guys do….jump and leave for the NFL riches they think they deserve.
Trubiski didn’t have that many starts in college when he was drafted either. Look how he has turned out.
Lol 8 INTS all season is an “Interception machine?” What a joke man
JaMarcus Russell only threw 8 INTs in his final year at LSU.
Yeah, and Russell also didn’t break a crap load of Conference/team records either. You can’t even compare these two
Redskins got what they wanted. Not bad.
Not just got who they wanted, but when they wanted it. As a fan, it was hard not to worry about the rumored trade up ala RGIII.
Best Quarterback in the draft.
