Giants GM Dave Gettleman has already dealt with plenty of criticism for selecting Duke QB Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick of this year’s draft. We heard on Friday that Gettleman may have been concerned that the Redskins — who held the No. 15 overall pick — were going to nab Jones, which forced him to take the former Blue Devil at No. 6 rather than wait until the Giants were on the clock again at No. 17.
And as Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv tweets, Gettleman says he knows for a fact that at least two teams would have taken Jones between pick nos. 6 and 17. Those two teams, according to Vacchiano’s sources, are the Redskins and Broncos.
However, ESPN’s Dianna Russini tweets that the Redskins were never going to draft Jones, and Russini says the Broncos were not interested in Jones either. Mike Klis of 9News tweets that Denver was not going to take any QB with its No. 10 overall selection, and that Drew Lock was the team’s top-rated quarterback. Klis says the Broncos were considering a trade into the back end of the first round to take Lock, but Jones was not on the radar at No. 10.
Of course, other clubs, like the Bengals (No. 11) or Dolphins (No. 13), could have been in the market for Jones in the first round, but it appears that the top two purported threats to Gettleman’s favorite QB weren’t threats at all.
If Jones ultimately is successful with Big Blue, this will all become an amusing footnote to the story of his career. But if he’s not, Gettleman will have a major blemish on his run as the team’s GM.
He already has a huge blemish on his resume…….. he traded Odell Beckham for Dexter Lawrence, Jabrill Peppers and Oshane Ximines. What a joke
Trading a player who is obsessed with himself to get back a brand new defense? Not bad.
But when you reach on Lawrence too it’s bad.
Should have ended up with Josh Allen, Montez Sweat, then either a corner or offensive lineman, and Josh Rosen. Team would be set up much better this years next year.
Now they have zero pass rush. The team will be looking at 3-4 wins again. Right back in the top 5, with people pressuring them to take one of the better QBs.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. You nailed it, Perksy! How did they pass on Josh Allen & Sweat? And just wait until Haskins starts beating the Giants on a regular basis. Bye bye Gettleman!
Jones is like an athletic Philip Rivers and had the mental makeup that can handle the NYC media. OBJ is solely dependent on Eli, so ditch that cancer and send him to Cleveland

Besides inaccurate downfield passes and a 2:1 TD to INT ratio in the ACC. But yeah, sure, Rivers.
The two were nothing alike in their final year of college. Rivers outperformed Jones by a mile in every QB category.
OBJ: dropped balls over the middle, sideline tantrums, 50% of games in past 2 seasons, shrugged when asked if happy after receiving almost $100mil contract, ripped Eli in the media (Eli lobbied to draft him), hot tub with Beiber night before playoff game, cocaine with models, leaving for the locker room against the Eagles before the half was over ON PRIME TIME. Getteman has made poor decisions, including not trading OBJ a year earlier. However, unloading him and getting 2 picks and a Safety out of the deal is probably his best move as a GM with Big Blue.
Odell has already made more pro bowls then all 3 of the players they got in return will in their careers combined.
Giants are not my team, but you know this how? Crystal ball? I can’t stand TB12, but no one saw him as a future Hall of Famer at pick #199 in 2000. I’m not saying any of these guys will come anywhere near his success, but how do you know none of them will become Pro Bowlers?
Anecdotes are hot.
And how about Dexter Lawerence getting suspended for both college football playoff games??? Seems like a great teammate and not a cancer at all
How about doing some research bud he was suspended for a banned substance don’t know how that makes him a cancer. And a quote from Wilkins “Dex is our brother. Blood couldn’t make us any closer. Just grinding with him and working with him everyday has been special…. He doesn’t even know but he taught me so much. We’ve got a lot of love and respect for him” doesn’t sound like someone who’s cancer. Do your f*cking research before stating something so blasphemous.
Isn’t not being available for the 2 biggest games of the year regardless of the reason being a bad teammate???
Gentleman seems very prone to panicking and rushing decisions
He played this draft like the rookie GM for the Jaquars in the movie Draft Day. Could’ve got Jones much later and even if he didn’t they Rosen has a higher ceiling and could’ve been had much cheaper. It’s all about getting the most draft equity bang for the buck. Trading back from 6 to 12 or so and still taking Jones could’ve given them some more quality picks.
Such a high ceiling that AZ was willing to dump him for a 3rd and 5th rd draft pick.
When you’re basing your opinions around a decision made by the Cardinals, your opinion is inherently flawed.
Nice ad hominem. 25.9 QB Rating. Thanks for letting me dominate you.
Wonder what Aaron Rodgers value would’ve been to you in any of the several seasons he was buried behind Favre?
I wonder what would have happened if your mother was born with a penis. You would not have been born lol. That is such a stupid point. Rosen had a QBR of 25.9 through 5 games.
Exactly. And not only Rosen had for cheaper, but also cost them much less cap space wise. Signing bonus already paid out to him. Jones is going to cost a fortune with the signing bonus being a top 6 pick. Not to mention still paying Eli.
Good points on $$$$.
you just described Jones too
Odell can’t even stay on the field. He isn’t worth the headache.
Come back when he actually plays a few full seasons in a row.
This is exactly what giants fans tell themselves to make sense of how stupid that trade was
Nah. It’s a fact. 1 complete season and played 50% of games the last 2 years. Facts. OBJ is a cancer. Easy trade. Just a year too late.
Are you the dumbest person on the planet? Without OBJ these past years the Giants would be lucky to win a game. The numbers he put up with noodle arm manning are insane, he was easily the greatest Giant on the roster and what’d you get for him? TRASH you know who’s cancer? You
No, the dumbest people on the planet are your loser parents for not aborting you. “WiThOuT oBJ tHe GIanTs wOUld.” I wonder how much spit came out of your mongoloid face when you spewed that nonsense. Hey loser, in 2017, the only games the GIANTS won were without OBJ. In 2018, the GIANTS only won 1 game where OBJ broke 75 yards. Hey loser, OBJ played 1 full season. Hey loser, OBJ was “unhappy” after week 3 when, a few weeks into a $100mil contract. Thank you for letting me crush you.
OBJ is a stud and will be for years. Plus he’s a winner, I’ll take his talent with his headaches any day
I believe OBJ began playing with the Giants in 2014. From then til now, their record is 31-49. How does that make him a winner?
I am not a Giants fan.
So I guess your lucky
You’re*
The classic comeback when you have nothing to say…… correct someone’s spelling
What a lame headline
Of course he will defend the pick. What’s he supposed to say? We reached for the kid and he’s a bum?
Well, a headline IS supposed to reflect what happened, so in that regard, it’s proper. As opposed to digging at the headline, I’d go with “what a lame justification.”
And all three 1st rounders were reaches.
the other thing about the article is that its really tough to find a GM who is going to come out and say that the guy they drafted wasnt atop their draft board at that position or “really high”. broncos said lock was their top rated qb and they werent going to draft a qb at 10. really? so lock was ahead of murray and haskins? if murray fell to 10th, they werent taking him? of course not, but they are going to sell it like they were. nothing in this article should be a surprise a day after the draft ends.
Crazy how delusional Giants fans are. The giants made the trade look even worse Jones 10000% would’ve been there in the 2nd. It’s mind boggling that they had the worst 1st round with 3 picks. And on top Eli is the QB for the 3 year plan holy crap wake up! Gonna waste the prime of Barkley, Engram, and Shepard.
Not to mention all the cap space paying Eli and Jones, if Eli is kept. Signing bonus to Jones will be a lot
Yeah, acting like they’re a loaded team that can afford to sit their 6th overall pick for up to 3 seasons is beyond ridiculous.
Gettleman swears he drafted Brady 2.0 without considering there’s no Belichick 2.0 to make that even a pipe dream.
Jones hasn’t shown he can throw deep with accurately, and folds under pressure
As far as the mythical “handling the NY media”: media is media. Play well and you can pick your nose during a post-game interview and no one will care.
The only time you should fear the media is when you don’t perform
Oh, stop trying to justify giving away OBJ.
Just stop
Gettleman might as well step up to the mic and sing on this one. If he’s wrong, he’s probably going to be looking for a new job. For his sake and the Giants’ fanbase I hope he’s right.
Gutterman is a joke. None of those teams were going to take a QB that averaged 147 yards a game. How stupid does he think we are.
some mock drafts didn’t have jones in the top 60
Just a reminder that Gettleman traded Damon “snacks” Harrison one of the best DT in the league for 5th round pick(WR Darius Slayton) at the trade deadline last season……
So he traded Harrison and then back filled that void by trading OBJ and using the pick to reach for Lawrence…brilliant!
Noodle Arm 2 – Electric Boogaloo
If your going to pick the first QB of the draft your plan should be to utilize him immediately. There is no value in using a #6 pick on a guy Gettleman projects as a clipboard holder for 2 seasons.
Especially on a team that needs immediate help; they don’t have the luxury of waiting a few years on the #6 pick to make an impact.
