The NFL has awarded compensatory draft picks to several teams, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The full rundown, which is below, includes two third-round picks for both the Rams and Patriots.
The NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams, as directed by the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The compensatory pick system provides additional picks to teams who lose more/better qualifying free agents in the previous year than gained. As the NFL explains:
“Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. No club may receive more than four compensatory picks in any one year. If a club qualifies for more than four compensatory picks after offsetting each CFA lost by each CFA gained of an equal or higher value, the four highest remaining selections will be awarded to the club.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement limits the number of compensatory selections to the number of clubs then in the League (32). This year, six clubs: the Ravens, Bengals, Colts, Rams, Giants, and 49ers qualified for compensatory selections under the net loss formula but will not receive those picks because the final numerical values of the CFAs who were lost by those clubs ranked 33rd through 39thamong the final numerical values of all compensatory selections. Each of those six clubs will receive compensatory selections for other CFAs lost whose final numerical values ranked within the top 32. “

Dolphins could have had a 3rd here. Good thing they traded Landry for a 4th instead of letting him be a FA. Morons
Can somebody explain this in English?? google translate does not seem to be working
lol
When you lose free agents to big contracts you get compensation
Thanks!
So basically after the last pick/#32 of let’s say 3rd round, these teams will get to make an additional pick before the 4th round begins? Extra picks in between rounds? Is that right or am I way off?…
yep
can they somehow make the picks mandatory positions?…i.e. make the Falcons pick o-line no matter how hard they fight it lol?!?!
Ask a Bengals fan.
How does ndamukong suh signing with the rams not affect their compensatory picks?
Was he cut? If a player is cut or isn’t signed until after a particular date they won’t count for or against the calculations. Or so I’m told.
0 he was cut
Cut players do not count in the number of players lost, because the original team had the option to keep that player. These additional picks are intended to provide compensation only for players who have a contract expire at the end of the year, and a team does not re-sign them.
With that in mind, you can fairly well calculate how many compensatory picks a team could receive each year. Thirteen of the 32 NFL teams were awarded picks this year. To get an idea of why each team received the picks, here are the players they each lost and signed in 2013:
Ah! That makes sense. Thanks!
Its a laggard system but based on FA’s but since he was cut, I guess he had to go through waivers which means heh could have been claimed by any team. I know the Lions traded Tate for Philly’s 3rd this year but if Tate signs with someone else and the contract is above a certain number, they can get a compensation as high as a 3rd rounder back in the 2020 draft but if they sign other FA players it could off set their compensation on Tate. I think Kenleyfornia2 is right that if you are “cut” you become a FA but not by an expiring contract. This is a very complicated award system and you only really get to understand it once you have passed your capoligist training.
Philadelphia was supposed to get three picks but the Mike Wallace signing cost him that pick. Nice to see them pick up a couple more picks because they lost her third rounder in the trade for Golden Tate.
And it’s likely they’ll gain another pick next draft after someone else signs Tate…So, all in all it was a good gamble and trade for the Eagles..
This system of rewarding teams for not attempting to upgrade during the offseason should be scrapped. Makes more sense to offer compensation to teams when their coaching staff is poached by opponents.
The whole thing/system is kind of stupid to be honest. There shouldn’t be any picks awarded.
Agreed. Every year it’s the Ravens and Patriots who take advantage of the compensatory system. Time to rethink things.
