The Jaguars want to “move forward” with Leonard Fournette, but the running back wants to discuss some matters of business first. The former No. 4 overall pick wants the guarantees on his contract to be reinstated, according to Mike Florio of PFT.
The entirety of Fournette’s contract was guaranteed until the Jaguars used Fournette’s late-season ban as reason to void the remaining guarantees on his rookie deal. Fournette’s team believes that the language in his contract does not allow the Jaguars to 86 his guarantees over a one-game ban for on-the-field conduct.
Fournette topped 1,000 rushing yards during his rookie campaign in 2017, but still failed to manage four yards per carry. Last season, he was set back by injuries. In total, he appeared in only eight games in 2018, rushing for 439 yards and five touchdowns. On an efficiency basis, Fournette ranked just 32nd among running backs in Football Outsiders‘ DVOA and 26th in success rate.
If the Jaguars truly want to start fresh with Fournette, it might make sense for them to cave on this dispute.
Going back to college he has routinely been one of the most overrated rbs out there. Hes big and can run fast but that doesn’t make him a great player. Maybe he improves with better qb play but im skeptical
Just like the team he plays for. One and done. OVERRATED
Yea….Maybe if they had an actual QB that could keep teams from stacking the box it would help. I could be wrong though.
What college games were you watching? He was a stud when he was on the field. 4K rushing yards and 40 TDs in 3 years with a 6.2 ypc
When he is on the field is the key. In the pros too. This dude is all bark, not nearly as tough as his size and strength would make him seem. Jags need to move on before this gets uglier and they lose all leverage for a trade
Overrated? I don’t know if I’ve seen a better back in college these last few years
Just trade the guy already!
I hope the Jags when this one for a lesson to all the players coming up.
Put more money in the Billionaires pockets. What a great lesson
You damn people who are so against businesses making money.
And putting it in spoiled millionaires pockets is different how?
This situation is exactly why Smith held out against the Bears. Not taking sides with millionaires or billionaires, but this is why contracts are negotiated.
I’d really like to see what Fournette could do with a QB who defense were even mildly concerned with. He’s done pretty well considering he is always facing 8 or 9 men in the box. Of course, it would also help if he could stay healthy for a change.
Good way to get your contract voided for sure.
Since players can provide owners with no guarantees with regards to their health or performance why should they expect guarantees? Imagine the reaction of your own employer if you went to work and insisted on a guaranteed income in advance of providing any service to the company.
