Despite taking fire recently from fans and the media, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer‘s job is not in jeopardy according to team owner Zygi Wilf, Bob Sansevere of the Pioneer Press writes.
“We’re very happy with the coach and the entire coaching staff,” Wilf said. “It’s great to be in this position in December, that’s for sure. I’m very proud we stepped up and answered any questions about who we were as a team. I think we showed we were one of the best and can beat anyone on any given day.”
Considering he made the comments following Minnesota’s 41-17 win over Miami, Wilf was unlikely to make a statement saying his coaching staff was on the hot seat. The victory kept the Vikings in control of the sixth and final playoff spot.
After reaching the NFC Championship Game a year ago and splurging on Kirk Cousins in the offseason, the Vikings got off to a 6-6-1 start when many fans and pundits expected them to compete for the conference’s top seed. After scuffling on offense, the team made its first move when it fired offensive coordinator John DeFilippo following last week’s 21-7 loss to the Seahawks. Kevin Stefanski was elevated to the role and the offense thrived by putting a greater emphasis on the running game and Dalvin Cook.
The move could be the one to right the Vikings’ ship. But even if Minnesota struggles down the stretch, it is unlikely that Zimmer, considered one of the game’s top coaches, would be going anywhere.
Cousins has thrown more pick 6’s in the first year of his mega deal than Rodgers has thrown in his whole career.
That’s not all on cousins, that’s on the line. Picks are mostly him. Bad play by the O-line and players not going all out when the tides turn is more than him.
I’m not going to say Cousins isn’t overpaid but there isn’t a quarterback on earth that could have done much better in most of the bad games this year.
They need to fore Zimmer so he can come to Arizona and be the head coach.
Of course Zim is safe, his defense has been great, if it wasn’t for that clown Defilippo and missed FGs we’re talking about a for sure playoffs team.
He hired the kicker and OC.
Pretty sure the GM makes those decisions.
There’s no way a HC doesn’t have some say over his OC. Same for the positions. He may have been overruled in the QB derby, but not over a kicker.
Actually, Stefanski was a top pick for zimmer. The Vikings wanted to do something flashy. Pick someone who could make Foles look good.
Didn’t work.
Pablo is 100% correct. I know for a fact Stefanski was Zim’s pick by insiders. To think this is even a headline that Zim is safe is laughable. The argument should be on If Speilman is in the hot seat. Zim’s defense has kept the Vikes in this position to sneak in the playoffs. My guess Stefanski becomes full time OC next year and the Vikes become much better Offensively. But hey I am just a fan and my opinion is just that. But Zim wanted Stef as OC in offseason. That is fact.
If Spielman is on the hot seat, so is zimmer. Unless you actually expect to hire a new competent GM and not give him the opportunity to pick his own coach.
Zimmer can take me to pound town any day
What about Bob Wylie?
I don’t think he’d be able to “hut” enough to give it the daylight it needs. But I’d clap his cheeks & twist his mustache after.
Apparently no one wants to talk about the fact that Minnesota over paid for Cousins. He isn’t a top 10 QB. He looked good in Washington where he threw 99TD to 55 INT. Not exactly “great” by any stretch.
He’s a good QB similar to Stafford. His stats were inflated in Washington because he was constantly losing games obviously because his career record as a starter was 26-30.
Bottom line is he’s not the Savior that they thought he would be. One could argue that Keenum has been as good the past two years if not better .
Cousins is exactly what you say, and I thought that from the start. But where the front office faltered was with the Oline. Fact is with a poor oline Cousins was going to suffer. He needs time. Can’t make decisions in the fly. Yes Keenum did a better job doing that but Keenum is NOWHERE A BETTER QB THAN COUSINS! Many people forget that last year the Vikes has a perfect storm or luck. They didn’t have any huge injuries sans Cook. They were by and large healthy all year. This year. Not so much.
If you watched any games last year you would know that Keenum was a fluke. He should have had about 5 or 6 more interceptions. I’m great full for that season but he was clearly not the answer. He got paid way more than he was worth and Denver has talked about benching him still. The real issue isn’t with Kirk. He has been the above average QB we thought he was. The issue is having potentially the worst line in the NFL
Lol
When you have the leagues highest player payroll at 172MM you expect more than a 7-6-1 record. Of course Zimmer can’t be blamed that the Vikings only have about 9MM in cap space for next season.
