There are several wide receivers who could be dealt in advance of Tuesday’s trade deadline: Pierre Garcon, Demaryius Thomas, and DeSean Jackson are a few of the bigger names that are drawing the interest of various clubs after Amari Cooper was traded to the Cowboys on Monday.
And, given the Giants’ disastrous start to the season and Odell Beckham Jr.‘s dissatisfaction with the team’s direction, plenty of clubs are calling the Giants about the possibility of acquiring the enigmatic superstar. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports (via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv on Twitter) reports that, not only is Big Blue getting offers, those offers are apparently decent ones. The implication is that, if the Giants were serious about trading Beckham, they would find a vibrant market, despite OBJ’s massive contract.
But the contract, as Vacchiano points out, is one of the major obstacles to a potential deal. If New York were to trade Beckham, it would have to carry $16MM in dead money on its cap next year, and it would obviously need to replace its best player. Indeed, while the Giants are clearly not going anywhere this season, they gave Beckham his big-money deal with the intention of keeping him around at least through his prime years, and given that rebuilds in football do not necessarily take an extended period of time, it would obviously be shocking to see OBJ traded in the next couple of days.
Still, it is interesting that rival clubs think there is enough of a chance that New York would be willing to pull the trigger that they are actually making offers and not just doing due diligence with a phone call or two. Even when OBJ isn’t making drama, drama seems to find him.
No way Giants trade OBJ. The dead money cap hits for the next 2 years alone are over $40 million. His contract makes him untradeable for the next 2 seasons. Only chance is in year 3 when dead money cap hit is lower and OBJ can opt out of the remaining years.
Exactly
I thought the signing bonus is paid this year meaning no cap hit next year if dealt
A signing bonus is paid at the time of signing, but it’s usually not charged to the cap that way.
Why doesn’t the team trading for him assume all the cap?
It depends on what they could get for him. The cap hit isn’t $40M…it’s probably less than $20M at the end of the day, and if they’re getting a couple of 1’s+, might be worth it. Beckham’s not going to be worth a huge haul in a few years..he’s worth it now.
exactly
That’s if they were to cut him. It’d be $4m this year then $16m next year which is still a lot.
OBJ to the patriots. Pats will lineup Odell and Josh Gordon on the outside and Edelman in the slot and win the super bowl by a million
Don’t forget Gronk too;)
You’re a special kind of stupid….. where would they fit that contract??
Cap hit is 5.4 million this year for him, they have plenty of room as they have 7.4 mil of cap space.
That’s just poor management. They new the O line wasn’t strong and Eli was up there in age. So why pay a pain in the butt such a massive contract? They should have traded him before the draft and got picks last offseason.
Poor management alright. Should have never signed him to this albatross contract to begin with. Locker room problem while team is on a rebuild anyway. You can’t fix dumb
Do not understand the cap. If they trade him (and his contract), why does the Giants get a cap hit? Does this mean the acquiring team does not take the hit?
The dead money is related to the signing bonus he received
Can they rework it if a trade agreement is reached?
They can’t rework guaranteed money or money that’s already been paid (such as a signing bonus). When teams rework deals they stretch out the contract longer and change the structure of the guaranteed money and when it gets charged to the cap. They can’t change the contract to lower the overall amount that gets charged to the cap, and that amount accelerates if the team prematurely ends the contract, either by cut or trade.
The team he gets traded to receives the cap charge for his yearly salaries, not for the signing bonus or previously guaranteed money.
Haven’t the giants ever played madden? Just go to league options, then clear cap penalties.
Me every time
Oh man I feel dumb, I took over the Giants before and got in salary cap purgatory by releasing/trading expensive old players at will and then couldn’t couldn’t field a proper team. I just started all over after investing so much time
Gotta love these stories that mention no teams and no details that prove offers (decent or obscene) ever existed. I think the reporters behind this rumor are just jealous of those guys at Weekly World News who get to write about Bat Boy and aliens from Mars.
if some team offers a haul for him, make the deal. we’re not gonna be good for the years that the dead money will affect payroll. trade olvier Vernon, Jack Rabbit etc.. and go with in expensive young’ens. And of course get rid of Eli, it was a hell of a ride.
Let me get this right if he gets traded it hurts the Giants financially for 2 years ????
So if that’s the case wouldn’t that be a benefit for a team trading for him ???
I would think the value of the return would be greater then
If a team offers 2 number 1’s I would do the deal in a minute
With all his talent he truly is a headcase who worries more about his brand than his production on the field
Don’t get me wrong Eli is done but over the course of his career OBJ has not come thru in big games more than he has come thru
Giants should try to get San Fran’s number 1 this year & next
San Fran is fighting for the #1 overall pick. They aren’t going to give that up PLUS another #1 to take on that massive contract. Huge overpay.
It’s so stupid that people are saying Odell needs to stop talking and produce on the field. He absolutely is producing, on pace for like 1600 yards with a trash can at QB. Imagine him having a real QB? He would easily be the best receiver in the NFL. If he doesn’t call his teammates out and hold them accountable, who will? Does anyone understand how frustrating it must be to be on a team where nobody (outside of Saquon) is even half as good as you? The coach and the owner don’t hold anybody accountable except for OBJ, who ironically is the one actually producing.
