The class of quarterbacks for the upcoming draft is one of the most talented in recent memory, but perhaps no quarterback of the group is as polarizing as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.
Among other things, Mayfield has been questioned due to some of his on-field conduct last season along, with his height at 6 feet. He was also arrested in February 2017 in Arkansas on charges of public intoxication and fleeing.
The Browns, Giants, Jets, Broncos and Bills will all possibly be looking for quarterback help early in the first round, with other teams who could certainly be added to that list. Mayfield has visits scheduled this month with the Browns, Bills, Chargers, Jets, Giants, Dolphins, Broncos, and Cardinals. It’s already been suggested that the Jets traded up to the No. 3 pick in the draft in order to be in a position to take Mayfield and that they’ll select him if USC’s Sam Darnold is off the board.
While certain measurables don’t favor Mayfield when it comes to a quarterback class that includes Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, none of them really matched the decorated career Mayfield put together at Oklahoma.
So, where do you think the Oklahoma standout is destined to end up in the NFL? Will the Browns go all-in on Mayfield and take him at No. 1, will he be headed to New York with either the Jets, Giants or Bills or might the Broncos make him their quarterback of the future. He’ll go top 15 so many teams are in need of
quarterbacks (even after the insane qb free agency market) and in any other circumstance he’d go in the 20s, he’s a good qb, but not the best
How was Lamar’s college career less decorated? He won the heisman as a freshmen
Top 15? Lol….he’ll be off the board by Denver picking at 6 at the latest.
My bet is Jets at 3 after darnold and Rosen go 1-2.
Dam keyboard….hit 6 instead of 5
I”m thinking they need to forget about draft polls and create one to see how many want an ‘edit’ button for these posts.
I agree, all too often I hit post and then realize auto check changes my words around to something else.
12th to Bills.
He won’t get past Miami at 11. So the Bills would need to trade up.
If Mayfield is there at 8, I think the Bears are obvious trading partners. They have their sights on Nelson, and the only realistic way Nelson is on the board at their pick is if four QBs have been drafted. So if Mayfield is on the board, then Nelson is most likely gone.
It makes sense for the Bears in this scenario because there QBs being taken in the top 7 likely means that Barkley, Chubb, Fitzpatrick and Nelson are all off the board. While some might say the Bears should use the pick and draft Edmunds or Ward, my thought is that The difference between Edmunds and Roquan Smith is minimal. And the difference between Ward and Derwin James is even smaller. So the Bears trade from 8th to 12th, pick up a couple extra picks in the process and they’re still guaranteed either Edmunds, Smith, Ward or James.
*three QBs being taken in the top 7…
1. Browns Darnold
2. Giants Chubb
3. Jets Allen
4. Browns Barkley
5. Broncos Nelson
6. Colts Fitzpatrick
7. Bucs James
8. Bears Edmunds
9. 9ers Davenport
10. Raiders Vea
11. Dolphins Payne
12. Bills Mayfield
That’s how I see it playing out without any trades. 6 is the most likely trade up for the Bill’s. If Chubb, Barkley, and Nelson are gone there’s no reason for the Colts to sit there. Cards are the the only other team that will potentially trade into the top 10 for a QB. Sitting at 12 and 15 they will be guaranteed Mayfield, Rosen, or Jackson. No other team is as desperate for a QB.
Not a bad list but I see Ryan Pace trading up one spot then drafting the player he could have got by standing pat.
Sure must be fun to join the chorus a year later. But Pace was 100% right to trade up if he believed the Browns were going to move ahead of them and take their guy.
After the fact, it looks like the 49ers weren’t willing to trade that far back, but the logic in the moment was at least sound. The Bears had a pre-planned deal with the Browns to move to #3. So they knew the Browns wanted to move up. But in the moments leading up to the draft, the Browns stopped answering the phone. So the Bears worried they were going to lose their guy.
But the 49ers logic? Holy cow was that awful. Lynch admits he traded the pick believing the Bears were going to take his guy. His backup plan was to use the 3rd pick on a guy who went 31st… He turned down a potentially huge offer from Cleveland that included a ton more than the Bears were offering because he didn’t want to slip past 9 and risk losing the second best player on his board.
What your basically saying is that none of those GMs did enough homework to know what other teams were trying to accomplish.
I’m curious as to why the Browns stopped answering the phone. Considering how inept that organization is, they probably just forgot to charge the batteries.
Giants should without a doubt get the running back. They don’t need to get caught up in the q.b. Race. If they can trade their pick and move down a couple picks to allow a team to sneak in and grab one of the top four qbs they can make bank on the rb and a couple other major picks from the trade.
Having said that, qbs could and should very likely go with the top four picks.
Obviously I forgot the browns have pick four also. So because I am running on two hours sleep ignore my previous post. Giants have to take rb number two cuz browns will or should otherwise. Take darnold and rb in first round and the browns are a possible wildcard team in two years. I’ll stop rambling and go to sleep.
The Gints will need a successor to Eli. While Barkley is a beast, RBs wear down in a few years just when a franchise QB is hitting his prime.
On the other hand, if you can find a RB with the durability of Frank Gore, you end up with a bell cow you can count on for about a decade.
He will Definitely go somewhere in the NFL draft, some North American team will take him.
top 250 pick, for sure!
So your saying we can ignore reports that Vince McMahon has hired a black ops squad to kidnap Mayfield and keep him on ice until the XFL is ready to roll?
no those reports still are accurate, the NFL team will just hold his rights until XFL dos collapses faster than XFL uno.
then again, he COULD always opt to go battle Johnny Football up in there Canada ey.
It be like Manning vs. Brady part deux
He would fit in LA with the Chargers.
Denver takes him number 5
I got the draft going
1. Darnold
2. Barkley
3. Mayfield
4. Chubb
Patriots pull off a trade for number one and laugh in everyone’s face.
And Tom Brady retires before the season.
Patriots are too smart for that.
He’s another QB bust in waiting.
